The most useful changes are usually in Accessibility, Video, Camera, or Display before you start playing: turn off camera shake, head bob, weapon sway, and motion blur; disable forced camera movement, dolly zooms, auto-centering, flashes, and other full-screen effects when those controls exist; lower camera sensitivity; then test the field of view and camera distance in small increments. A persistent center dot, subtitles, speaker labels, and audio cues can make sudden events easier to anticipate. Some games also offer a dedicated Motion Sickness preset, such as Resident Evil 4.
These options can reduce visual discomfort and soften the presentation of some scares, but they cannot remove every scripted horror event. Settings differ by game, platform, edition, and patch, and a control that works for one person may feel worse for another. Stop or pause as soon as symptoms begin.
What accessibility settings can—and cannot—change
Motion sickness in a first-person or over-the-shoulder horror game is often aggravated by camera shake, camera bobbing, weapon sway, motion blur, rapid camera movement, forced viewpoint changes, and an uncomfortable field of view (FOV). Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 recommends avoiding these effects or providing a way to turn them off. Its accessibility feature tags group shaking, swaying, bobbing, blur, camera speed, and forced narrative movement under camera effects that should be adjustable.
Jumpscares are a different problem. A game may let you reduce the shake, flash, sound cue, gore, or full-screen effect surrounding a scare while keeping the underlying event. Subtitles and speaker names can reveal that a character is about to speak, and audio-cue options can make important sounds easier to identify, but neither setting guarantees that a surprise will disappear. Some cinematic events are authored into cutscenes and remain unchanged even when gameplay camera effects are disabled.

There is no universally safe combination of settings. Apple’s Reduced Motion criteria acknowledge that motion can provoke reactions even on two-dimensional screens, so sensitivity varies well beyond games with a moving 3D camera. Treat each control as an experiment, change one or two variables, and keep the configuration that lets you play comfortably.
Start with a visual-comfort or Motion Sickness preset
Open the game’s settings before loading a campaign. Look under Accessibility, Video, Camera, or Display. If the title offers a preset named Motion Sickness, Comfort, or Reduced Motion, apply it first and inspect what it changed.
Resident Evil 4 documents a dedicated Motion Sickness preset. Because presets are title-specific, do not assume that selecting one in a different game changes every relevant option. Use the preset as a starting point, then check individual toggles for shake, blur, FOV, camera distance, flashes, and subtitles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open the settings from the title screen if possible; this exposes options that may be unavailable during a cinematic.
- Apply the visual-comfort or Motion Sickness preset.
- Read the resulting values instead of assuming the preset turned every effect off.
- Launch a safe area or early checkpoint and test movement, aiming, sprinting, and a camera transition.
- Return to the menu and make small adjustments until symptoms and visual strain are manageable.
Camera controls that most often reduce motion sickness
Camera shake
Set camera shake to Off or its lowest value. Shake is commonly triggered by explosions, melee impacts, sprinting, damage, and scripted scares. It can make a stable room appear to move and can compound other effects such as blur or weapon sway. If a game separates gameplay shake from cinematic shake, disable the gameplay setting first and test a cutscene separately.
Head bob and weapon sway
Turn head bob and weapon sway off when available. Head bob adds a rhythmic vertical movement while walking; weapon sway moves the view or the held weapon independently of your input. Microsoft lists camera bobbing and swaying among the effects that should be adjustable. A setting may be labelled head bob, view bob, additive camera motion, or weapon motion.

Motion blur and mouse blur
Disable motion blur, including a separate mouse-blur option on PC if the game provides one. Blur can hide the direction of a fast turn and make ordinary movement look like a smear. If the menu offers only a combined visual effects or comfort slider, lower it and check whether blur disappears.
Forced movement, auto-centering, and dolly zooms
Turn off forced camera movement, automatic camera centering, and dolly-zoom effects where possible. Forced movement can occur during takedowns, scripted reveals, climbing, or story transitions. Auto-centering repeatedly pulls the view away from the direction you selected. A dolly zoom changes camera distance and FOV together, creating a sudden perspective shift. The Last of Us Part II documents a dolly-zoom control, making it an example of a cinematic effect that can be exposed separately.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Camera and look sensitivity
Lower horizontal and vertical camera sensitivity if fast turns or aim corrections trigger symptoms. Microsoft specifically recommends adjustable horizontal and vertical camera movement and sensitivity. Change horizontal and vertical values independently if the game allows it: some players tolerate a slower horizontal turn but need normal vertical movement, or the reverse. Avoid making a large jump in sensitivity; a small reduction preserves control while reducing abrupt visual acceleration.
Field of view
Adjust FOV in small increments rather than assuming that wider is always better. A wider FOV shows more of the scene but can increase peripheral motion; a narrower FOV reduces peripheral movement but may feel zoomed in and require more camera turning. Microsoft’s guidance is that players should be able to choose the angle least likely to make them sick. The comfortable value depends on display size, viewing distance, camera perspective, and the individual player.
Camera distance
For third-person games, increase or decrease the distance between the character and camera in small steps. The Last of Us Part II exposes a camera-distance control alongside its FOV slider. A farther camera can reduce the sense that the character is filling your peripheral vision, while a closer camera may make aiming easier. Keep the setting that produces the least visual strain during walking and combat, not just in a static menu.

A persistent center dot or reticle
Enable a persistent center dot, center reticle, or fixation point if the game offers one. A stable point can give your eyes a reference while the environment moves. The Last of Us Part II and Redfall document center-fixation options intended to improve visual comfort. If a bright dot is distracting, choose the smallest size, lowest opacity, or least intrusive color available.

Screen shake, flashes, and full-screen effects
Disable screen shake again in the scare-specific or gameplay section if the game has separate controls. Then look for screen flashes, light flashes, full-screen effects, damage effects, or visual intensity. Lowering these options can remove a white burst, vignette, chromatic distortion, or sudden overlay that makes a scare physically unpleasant. The effect may still occur as a character, enemy, or sound enters the scene.
Graphic-content and gore presentation
Check for a graphic-content, gore, dismemberment, or violence setting. Dead Space presents graphic-content choices as a way for players to control how they view disturbing material. These controls target blood and body damage rather than camera motion, but reducing graphic detail can make an unexpected encounter easier to tolerate. Read the description carefully: a gore setting may affect combat aftermath without changing the timing of a jumpscare.
Subtitles, speaker names, and audio cues
Turn on subtitles and, if available, speaker names. A subtitle line or name can signal that a conversation or radio transmission is beginning before the voice arrives. Some games also provide explicit audio-cue presentation options. These do not eliminate an ambush, but they can make dialogue and important environmental sounds easier to anticipate, especially when you play with low volume or headphones are uncomfortable.
Audio and volume balance
When a game offers separate sliders, reduce effects volume while keeping dialogue and subtitles clear. A sudden loud sting can be the most distressing part of a scare. Do not rely on a single master-volume reduction if it makes essential dialogue unintelligible; use captions and speaker labels to preserve information while lowering impact sounds.

What documented games expose
| Game or guidance | Documented comfort-related controls | What that means for players |
|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil 4 | Dedicated Motion Sickness preset | A title-specific starting point for reducing visually uncomfortable effects; inspect individual settings after applying it. |
| The Last of Us Part II | FOV slider, camera-distance control, camera-shake option, motion-blur option, dolly-zoom option, and center-dot option | Provides separate controls for perspective, camera movement, cinematic zoom, and a stable visual reference. |
| Redfall | Center-fixation option | Offers a persistent reference point intended to improve visual comfort. |
| Dead Space | Graphic-content presentation choices | Lets players reduce or tailor disturbing visual material, although it does not necessarily disable a scare’s timing or sound. |
| Microsoft Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 | Adjustable or disableable camera shake, bobbing, motion blur, mouse blur, camera speed, and forced movement | Use these categories as search terms when a game’s labels differ from the familiar names. |
The presence of one control does not establish that a title has the others. A game may provide a center dot but no FOV slider, or a motion-blur toggle but no way to change cutscene camera movement.
A practical setup sequence for a new horror game
- Find every relevant menu. Check Accessibility, Camera, Video, Display, Audio, Subtitles, and Gameplay. Some titles split visual-comfort options across several pages.
- Apply the preset, if present. Select Motion Sickness, Comfort, or Reduced Motion, then record which values changed.
- Remove high-frequency camera motion. Set shake, head bob, weapon sway, motion blur, and mouse blur to Off or the minimum value.
- Remove perspective surprises. Disable forced camera movement, auto-centering, dolly zooms, and additive camera motion when those switches exist.
- Slow the view. Reduce horizontal and vertical sensitivity in small steps and test both ordinary walking and rapid combat turns.
- Tune FOV and distance. Change only one setting at a time, move a short distance in-game, and keep the value that feels stable rather than the one that looks widest.
- Add a reference point. Enable a center dot or reticle and adjust its size and opacity if possible.
- Reduce sudden intensity. Turn down flashes, full-screen effects, and screen shake; choose a less graphic presentation if offered.
- Make information predictable. Enable subtitles, speaker names, and available audio cues, then balance dialogue and effects volume.
- Test a real transition. Walk, sprint, aim, take damage, enter a scripted room, and watch a short cinematic. Some effects appear only in one of these situations.
How to tune settings when symptoms continue
If walking causes nausea or eye strain
Turn off head bob, sway, and blur first, then lower look sensitivity. If discomfort remains, test a modest FOV change and a center dot. Keep the display at a comfortable distance and take a break rather than trying to push through symptoms.
If turning quickly is the trigger
Reduce horizontal sensitivity and disable acceleration or smoothing if the game exposes those controls. Test vertical sensitivity separately. A lower sensitivity can require more physical stick or mouse movement, so balance comfort against the need to turn quickly during combat.
If attacks or explosions cause a reaction
Disable camera shake and damage-screen effects. Look for flash and full-screen-effect controls, then reduce effects volume. If the game separates gameplay and cinematic settings, verify both rather than assuming one toggle covers every event.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
If only cutscenes are difficult
Check whether the options explicitly apply to cutscenes. Microsoft notes that some accessibility requirements concern gameplay and do not necessarily cover cinematic sequences. A game can expose extensive camera controls during play while leaving a story transition unchanged. Use subtitle and audio settings, skip a cinematic when the game permits it, or pause before symptoms escalate.

If a center dot helps but feels distracting
Reduce its size or opacity, select a less prominent color, or use a reticle that appears only while aiming. The goal is a stable reference, not another bright object competing with the scene.
Limits, platform differences, and safe play
Labels and behavior can change between platforms, editions, and patches. “Camera stabilization,” “additive camera motion,” “visual effects,” and “comfort” may bundle several functions under one control. Read the in-game description and verify the result in motion rather than relying on the label.
A setting can reduce symptoms without making a game comfortable for every player. FOV, camera distance, sensitivity, and center-dot preferences are personal. No cited guidance establishes a universal setting combination or a percentage of players helped by any option. If you develop nausea, headache, dizziness, sweating, or eye pain, pause immediately, rest, and return only when you feel normal. Persistent or severe symptoms warrant medical advice.
Bottom line
Start with a Motion Sickness or comfort preset when available, then turn off shake, bob, sway, blur, forced movement, flashes, and other full-screen effects. Tune sensitivity, FOV, and camera distance gradually; add a center dot and clear subtitles; and lower graphic intensity or effects volume when those options exist. These changes can make horror games less physically punishing and reduce the impact of some jumpscares, but scripted events may remain. Test the result in actual gameplay and stop as soon as your body signals that the settings are not sufficient.
