Horned dinosaurs did not share one universal fighting style. Their horns, frills and skulls formed several mechanical designs, each suited to different ways of receiving and transmitting force. A 2026 finite-element study of five ceratopsians—Psittacosaurus, Protoceratops, Centrosaurus, Spiclypeus and Triceratops—found that horn position and skull architecture produced distinct stress patterns. Fossil injuries add behavioral evidence: healed lesions in Triceratops are consistent with horn-to-horn or horn-to-frill combat, while Centrosaurus shows a different pattern that may indicate other targets or a stronger display function.
What the skull models show
Finite-element analysis treats a fossil skull as an engineering structure. Researchers create a digital mesh, assign material properties, apply a specified load and calculate where stress concentrates. The 2026 analysis tested several simulated combat behaviors rather than recording a living animal’s actions. Its results therefore show which skull regions handled particular force directions, not a definitive movie of how each dinosaur fought.
Centrosaurus: a strong nose horn with a lateral weakness
The large nasal horn of Centrosaurus handled vertical and front-to-back (longitudinal) stresses relatively well. It performed poorly under mediolateral stress—the side-to-side loading produced when a force pushes the horn or snout sideways. That combination would make some forward or downward contacts mechanically less demanding than a twisting or lateral clash. The result helps explain why a prominent nasal horn could evolve without implying that it was built for every possible impact.

Spiclypeus and Triceratops: brow horns that spread loads
The supraorbital, or brow, horns of Spiclypeus and Triceratops experienced low-to-moderate stresses in most of the modeled tests. Their surrounding skull architecture appears to distribute loads through the brow and frill rather than concentrating all of the force at a single tip. That is a mechanical advantage for repeated contact, but it does not identify the exact angle, speed or social context of a real encounter.

Why the study does not establish one fighting technique
The authors conclude that differing intraspecific combat behaviors may have driven the evolution of ceratopsian cranial weapons. They also caution that robust skulls can partly reflect inherited structural features. A low modeled stress value is evidence of performance under that test, not proof that the animal routinely used that load case. The five modeled taxa represent a sample of ceratopsian diversity, not every horned dinosaur.
What injuries reveal about Triceratops and Centrosaurus
Biomechanical models become more informative when compared with damage preserved in fossils. In a 2009 PLOS ONE study, Andrew Farke, Wolff and Tanke compared cranial lesions in Triceratops and Centrosaurus. The frequency of lesions in the squamosal bone of the frill differed significantly between the genera (P=0.002). Differences in the other examined cranial regions were not significant (P>0.20).

The Triceratops pattern
The concentration of damage in the frill’s squamosal region is consistent with Triceratops using its horns in combat while the frill helped shield the neck. A 2022 histological and chemical diagnosis of a Triceratops lesion strengthens the case that at least some injuries happened during life and healed, rather than being breaks acquired after death. That work connects the evolution of a solid frill and long brow horns with protection of the cervical region from blows delivered by other individuals.

Lower lesion frequency in the compared Centrosaurus sample does not prove that the animal never fought. Several explanations remain compatible with the fossils: its ornamentation may have been more display-focused; combat may have targeted the body rather than the head; or head-to-head encounters may have been less common. Lesions establish injury and healing, but they cannot uniquely identify every strike angle or social ritual.

Were frills shields or displays?
Both functions are plausible, and they are not mutually exclusive. A frill can protect the neck while also advertising species, age, sex or condition. Horns and frills may additionally have helped deter predators or supported muscles involved in feeding. The 2023 review by Ali Nabavizadeh treats these structures as multifunctional rather than as single-purpose weapons.

These are tendencies, not rules. The 2023 review documents important exceptions to the centrosaurine–chasmosaurine contrast, so horn placement alone cannot identify behavior.

Did horned dinosaurs lock horns?
The fossil and modeling evidence does not establish a universal horn-locking maneuver like that used by some modern hoofed mammals. Different taxa experienced different modeled stresses, and the injury record leaves several possible contact behaviors open. Triceratops may have used its long brow horns in head-to-head contests while its frill protected the neck, but the data do not specify whether opponents pushed, struck, twisted, or briefly interlocked horns. Centrosaurus may have used its nasal horn under a different loading regime or emphasized display over dangerous head clashes.

The safest interpretation is taxon-specific combat. Skull shape constrained which forces an animal could tolerate, and behavior likely evolved around those constraints. Some encounters may have involved direct horn contact; others may have involved threats, shoving, blows to the body or no physical contact at all. A mechanical result for one simulated direction cannot be converted into a universal sequence for every horned dinosaur.

How to read the evidence without overclaiming
- Finite-element stress: a prediction for a specified digital load, not a measurement from a living dinosaur.
- Bone lesions: evidence of injury and, when histology shows repair, healing during life; they do not uniquely reveal the attacker’s intent or exact strike geometry.
- Comparative frequency: the significant squamosal difference between Triceratops and Centrosaurus is informative, while the non-significant results in other cranial bones limit broader conclusions.
- Evolutionary interpretation: weapon performance may have influenced selection, but inherited skull construction and non-combat functions also shaped the final anatomy.
Together, the studies support a flexible conclusion: ceratopsian weapons evolved as several workable solutions to mechanical and social problems. Triceratops provides the strongest combined case for combat and neck protection; Centrosaurus demonstrates that a large nasal horn could belong to a different performance and behavioral package. Horns and frills were therefore neither simple swords nor purely decorative shields, but integrated structures whose value depended on how each species used its head.
