HORIZONS – Beyond Your Eyes | Unofficial is a Fabric modpack for Minecraft that combines Distant Horizons with vanilla-friendly visual upgrades, exploration content, structures, ambience and horror elements. To play reliably, install the same supported Minecraft release and Fabric profile on every client, allocate at least 5GB of memory to each client, and use the matching dedicated server pack with at least 7GB for a small server. This guide covers client installation, self-hosting, managed hosting, version control, backups and the fixes for common loading and exploration-lag problems.

What HORIZONS – Beyond Your Eyes includes

The pack’s defining feature is Distant Horizons, which renders terrain far beyond the normal Minecraft view distance. TeamLUP describes the project as “a new modpack with the main feature of Distant Horizons” intended to create “a new and improved vanilla world.” It remains close enough to vanilla for ordinary survival play while adding visual polish, world-generation changes, ambience, structures, dungeons and horror encounters.

The project contains about 150 mods. Examples named by the project include AmbientSounds, Falling Leaves, Terralith, When Dungeons Arise, Dungeons and Taverns, and From The Fog. The pack is marked Unofficial: it is not exactly the collection used in the related video series, although TeamLUP says it contains more than 95% of those mods. If you are trying to reproduce the series precisely, expect some differences in configuration, included mods or versions.

Supported Minecraft versions and loader

HORIZONS is a Fabric pack, not a Forge pack. CurseForge currently lists Fabric builds for Minecraft 1.21.1, 1.21, 1.20.1 and 26.1.2. The files page shown on October 15, 2026 lists HORIZONS – MC 1.21.1 – 21.0.0 as the latest 1.21.1 release, dated September 28, 2026, and a 26.1.2 build dated August 17, 2026.

Those labels are volatile. A new file can change the recommended game version, mod versions or server files, so select one release first and keep every player, server and backup on it.

Minecraft release Loader Availability noted in the project files What to do
1.21.1 Fabric Latest listed file: 21.0.0, September 28, 2026 Use the matching client profile and dedicated server pack.
1.21 Fabric Listed Do not mix with a 1.21.1 installation.
1.20.1 Fabric Listed Use only when all players and the server select 1.20.1.
26.1.2 Fabric Build dated August 17, 2026 Treat it as a separate release line and verify server-file availability.

The safest rule is simple: write down the exact Minecraft version and pack file before installing, then compare that information on every client and on the server console. A profile that merely says “HORIZONS” is not sufficient evidence that it matches.

Requirements before installing

Client memory

The project author suggests at least 5GB (5120MB) of allocated memory for the client, particularly when loading or frame-rate problems appear. This is allocated Java memory, not the total physical RAM in your computer. Leave enough memory for Windows, macOS or Linux and other applications; assigning nearly all physical RAM to Minecraft can make the computer slower or cause swapping.

Server memory

TeamLUP recommends a minimum of 7GB for a server and more for larger groups. One hosting provider advertises 6GB as a starting point, but that is a provider baseline rather than a guarantee for fast exploration. Distant Horizons and the pack’s world-generation content create more work when players travel into unexplored terrain.

Other checks

  • Use a 64-bit Java installation compatible with the Minecraft release selected by the launcher.
  • Ensure every player has enough free disk space for the instance, downloaded libraries, generated chunks and backups.
  • Use a wired connection or strong Wi-Fi for the first world download and for multiplayer exploration when possible.
  • Close other memory-heavy programs during the first launch, when Fabric may build caches and compile resources.
  • Make a copy of an existing world before changing Minecraft, Fabric or HORIZONS versions.

Install HORIZONS on the client

GDLauncher method

GDLauncher documents a pack-specific installation using its Quick Install ID. Its dependency handling is useful for a large pack because it downloads required components and rejects incompatible addons.

  1. Open GDLauncher and choose Create a new instance.
  2. Select Fabric as the mod loader.
  3. Choose one of the supported Minecraft versions listed by the project. Pick the same version your friends and server will use.
  4. Open the instance’s Addons section and click Add Addons.
  5. Paste the Quick Install ID #horizons-beyond-your-eyes.
  6. Download the result and allow GDLauncher to resolve the pack’s dependencies.
  7. Launch the instance once without adding personal mods. Confirm that the title screen, Fabric loader and HORIZONS files appear normally.

GDLauncher says it will not install incompatible addons. That protection does not make manually added shader packs, performance mods or other addons automatically safe, so add extras one at a time after the unmodified pack starts.

CurseForge method

  1. Open the HORIZONS project page in the CurseForge app.
  2. Choose Install to create a profile.
  3. Open the profile settings and confirm that the loader is Fabric.
  4. Confirm the Minecraft version shown in the profile matches the release selected for the server and other players.
  5. Increase the profile’s allocated memory to at least 5120MB if the author’s baseline is not already applied.
  6. Launch the profile and wait for the first startup to finish before changing graphics or adding mods.

If the app offers several HORIZONS files, do not automatically choose the newest one. Select the file that matches the server pack you intend to run; “newest” and “compatible with your existing world” are not always the same thing.

Verify a successful first launch

  • The launcher reports Fabric rather than Forge.
  • The Minecraft main menu loads without a missing-mod or dependency error.
  • The HORIZONS title or mod list contains the expected pack files.
  • A test single-player world loads and lets you move, open the inventory and save normally.
  • Distant terrain appears progressively rather than causing an immediate crash.

Choose between self-hosting and managed hosting

A self-hosted server gives you direct control over Java arguments, files, backups and the network connection. Managed hosting trades some low-level control for a web panel, automated installation and provider support. The important decision is not the brand name; it is whether the service supplies the exact HORIZONS server pack for your chosen Minecraft version and enough memory for the way your group explores.

Factor Self-hosting Managed hosting
Installation Download and unpack the dedicated server pack, install Java and configure the start command yourself. Often one-click or pre-installed; the provider handles the basic server files.
Version matching You must select, replace and document the exact client and server files. Choose a listed HORIZONS/Minecraft combination, then verify the supplied pack before starting.
RAM headroom Limited by the host computer’s physical memory and other workloads. Choose a plan above the 7GB recommendation when several players explore simultaneously.
World files Full local access; backups are your responsibility. Panels may provide world uploads, scheduled backups and restore controls.
Whitelist and configuration Edit whitelist.json, server properties and pack configuration directly. Panels commonly expose whitelist and configuration controls, with file access varying by provider.
Support and upgrades You troubleshoot Java, ports, crashes and upgrades yourself. Provider support and one-click reinstall or upgrade may reduce maintenance, but you remain responsible for version compatibility.
Cost No hosting subscription, but you pay in hardware, electricity, bandwidth and administration time. Recurring monthly charge; price depends on memory, location and included services.

Self-host a HORIZONS server

Use the dedicated server-pack file for the exact HORIZONS and Minecraft version chosen by the clients. Do not copy a client’s entire mods folder and assume it is a server pack: client-only mods can prevent a dedicated server from starting.

  1. Choose and record the release. Write down the Minecraft version, HORIZONS file name and Fabric version. Send that information to every player.
  2. Download the dedicated server pack. Obtain the server-pack file listed with that release and extract it into a new folder, not into an existing world directory.
  3. Install the required Java version. Use the Java version supported by the selected Minecraft release and confirm the executable works from a terminal or command prompt.
  4. Run the server once. Start it with the pack’s supplied script or documented command. It will create configuration files and normally stop while waiting for the EULA confirmation.
  5. Accept the EULA only if you agree to it. Edit the generated EULA file as required, then start the server again.
  6. Set basic properties. Configure the world name, difficulty, game mode, view-distance choices and query settings in server.properties. Keep view distance conservative until performance is known.
  7. Enable access control. Add player names to the whitelist and keep operator privileges limited to trusted administrators.
  8. Open network access safely. Forward the Minecraft port only when necessary, use a firewall and avoid exposing unrelated services on the same machine.
  9. Join locally first. Test with the host computer’s local address, then test from another network before inviting the entire group.
  10. Back up before inviting players. Stop the server for a complete copy, or use a tested live-backup method. A backup that has never been restored is not a proven recovery plan.

Managed hosting examples and documented plans

StickyPiston documents a pre-installed HORIZONS 20.2.0 server for Minecraft 1.21.1 with a stated 6GB minimum, instant setup, world uploads, whitelist and configuration controls, and a 14-day money-back guarantee. Its 6GB figure is below TeamLUP’s 7GB server recommendation, so it is better viewed as a starting allocation for a small, lightly explored world than as guaranteed headroom for a larger group.

Game Host Bros documents one-click installation, an included server pack, daily backups and DDoS protection. The documented monthly plans are:

Documented plan Memory Documented price Useful context
Entry 6GB $11.99 per month Below the pack author’s 7GB server recommendation.
Middle 10GB $19.99 per month Provides more room for simultaneous exploration.
Upper 14GB $27.99 per month More headroom for larger groups and heavier world generation.

Prices, promotions, included locations and resource policies can change. Confirm the current checkout total and whether the provider’s HORIZONS installation corresponds to your selected Minecraft release.

How much RAM does a server need?

Use the project author’s 7GB minimum as the floor, not as a performance guarantee. The right allocation depends on player count, how quickly players generate new terrain, simulation and view-distance settings, and what else runs on the host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Use case Starting allocation Why
Solo testing or an empty server 6GB may start the server Some providers document 6GB, but it leaves less room than the author’s recommendation.
Small private group At least 7GB Matches TeamLUP’s stated minimum and allows moderate exploration.
Several players exploring in different directions 7GB or more Chunk generation and Distant Horizons work increase together.
Larger group or long-range exploration More than 7GB, adjusted after monitoring Additional headroom reduces memory pressure; it cannot compensate for a slow CPU or ungenerated terrain by itself.

Do not solve every lag problem by assigning unlimited RAM. If the Java process has enough memory but the CPU cannot generate chunks quickly, reducing simultaneous exploration and pre-generating terrain will help more than another large allocation.

Pre-generate terrain before group exploration

Game Host Bros identifies chunk pre-generation as the main mitigation for exploration-related lag spikes. Generate the area around your intended base and travel routes before the group spreads out. Pre-generation consumes CPU time and disk space while it runs, so perform it when nobody is playing, watch storage usage and make a backup first. The exact command depends on the pre-generation tool included in your selected server pack; use that tool’s documentation rather than copying a command from a different Minecraft version.

Updating without corrupting the world

  1. Read the new HORIZONS file notes and confirm that your target Minecraft version is supported.
  2. Stop the server and make a complete world and configuration backup.
  3. Record the current release so you can roll back.
  4. Install the new dedicated server pack in a separate directory or staging copy.
  5. Test the backup world on the new files before replacing the live server.
  6. Update every client to the identical HORIZONS, Minecraft and Fabric versions.
  7. Only then switch the live server and monitor the console for missing dependencies or data-fix warnings.

A CurseForge server-file changelog warns players to remain on the same version when updating. Joining with an older client can produce a rejection, missing-content error or unpredictable world behavior. Never delete the old backup until players have joined successfully and you have verified inventories, structures and dimensions.

Troubleshooting common failures

The game crashes while loading

  • Confirm the profile uses Fabric, not Forge.
  • Check that the Minecraft release exactly matches the HORIZONS file.
  • Remove manually added mods and launch the untouched pack.
  • Increase client allocation to at least 5120MB if physical RAM allows it.
  • Read the crash log for a named missing dependency or incompatible addon instead of repeatedly reinstalling the whole launcher.

The server refuses a player connection

  • Compare the client and server Minecraft versions character for character.
  • Compare the HORIZONS release and Fabric loader.
  • Verify that the server is running the dedicated server pack, not a client-only profile.
  • Check the whitelist and the server address or forwarded port.
  • Ask the player to remove extra client mods before testing again.

Low FPS or long freezes on a client

  • Confirm at least 5GB is allocated and that the operating system still has free memory.
  • Lower view-distance and graphics settings temporarily while Distant Horizons builds its distant terrain data.
  • Allow the first world load to finish; repeated forced shutdowns can leave caches incomplete.
  • Test without shaders or optional visual addons.
  • Watch whether the problem occurs only while entering new terrain; if so, coordinate exploration or reduce concurrent chunk generation.

Server lag spikes when players travel

  • Pre-generate the planned exploration area.
  • Reduce simultaneous travel in different directions.
  • Check CPU and memory usage rather than increasing RAM blindly.
  • Use a server allocation above the 7GB minimum for larger groups.
  • Pause heavy automated farms while the server catches up with world generation.

World appears changed after an update

Stop immediately, preserve the current directory and restore the pre-update backup in a test copy. Confirm that the new release supports the same Minecraft version and that no world-generation mod was added or removed unexpectedly. Only resume on the updated files after the test copy opens correctly and players’ important builds and inventories are present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Administration checklist for a stable private server

  • Keep a written record of the exact client and server release.
  • Use a whitelist and grant operator status sparingly.
  • Schedule backups and periodically restore one to verify it works.
  • Keep at least one backup from before every version change.
  • Monitor free disk space because Distant Horizons data and newly explored terrain grow over time.
  • Set a regular maintenance window for Java, modpack and host updates.
  • Tell players to stop exploring when the server announces a backup or upgrade.
  • Document who can access the machine, hosting panel and backup files.

Bottom line: the setup that avoids most problems

For a dependable HORIZONS session, select one supported Fabric release, install it through GDLauncher or CurseForge without extra mods, allocate at least 5120MB to each client, and give a dedicated server at least 7GB. Keep every participant on the same files, pre-generate terrain before a group expedition, and back up before every update. Self-hosting is practical when you can manage Java, networking and backups; managed hosting is simpler when one-click installation, web controls and provider backups are worth the recurring cost.
