Choose the faction whose race fantasy, visual style, lore, capital-city setting and cultural identity you genuinely prefer. In current retail World of Warcraft, Horde and Alliance still determine which races you can create, how the outdoor world treats you, which capital you use for War Mode and the faction context of your character. They no longer isolate you from most organized group content: cross-faction guilds and mixed-faction dungeon, raid and rated-PvP groups are supported.
For a new player, race preference is the best first filter. Then account for your friends or guild, how much open-world PvP you expect to play, and whether you want characters on both sides. Warbands make that last option substantially easier, so choosing one faction today does not have to be a permanent account-wide commitment.
What choosing a faction still changes
Faction choice is less restrictive than it was in earlier eras, but it is not cosmetic. Your choice remains visible in your character’s race, home capital, outdoor-world relationships and War Mode experience. The practical differences are easiest to see side by side:

Race and identity are the strongest differentiators
Blizzard presents character creation through faction-aligned playable races. That choice affects the look and feel of your character: their art direction, animations, capital-city context, starting environment and the cultural story attached to them. Those elements appear during ordinary travel and downtime, not only during a specific dungeon or battleground, which is why they tend to outlast temporary differences in community habits or group-finding convenience.

If you already know that one race is the character you want to play, that preference normally settles the faction question. Do not select a side first because of a vague reputation and then hope the available races feel right. Check the current official race roster before creating the character, because availability can change as the game is updated. A race you are excited to log into is a stronger long-term reason than an unverified claim about which faction is currently larger.
The outdoor world still recognizes the opposing faction
Cross-faction systems do not turn every outdoor encounter into a neutral social space. Blizzard’s current guidance says that opposite-faction guildmates remain unfriendly in the outdoor world and hostile in War Mode. In practical terms, a friend from the other faction can belong to your guild and join you for supported instances, yet the two of you do not become ordinary friendly questing partners everywhere in the open world.
That distinction matters most if your routine includes a lot of outdoor questing, gathering, travel or spontaneous world activity with friends. You should expect faction rules to remain part of that experience even when organized content is shared. If your playtime is concentrated in instanced activities, you will encounter the boundary less often; if you spend most sessions outdoors, it should be part of the initial decision rather than an afterthought.
War Mode is the clearest day-to-day faction conflict
War Mode is the opt-in route for open-world PvP. Blizzard identifies Stormwind as the Alliance capital and Orgrimmar as the Horde capital for enabling it. Your faction therefore determines the capital-city context in which you turn the system on and the side you represent when the outdoor world becomes a PvP environment.

Because War Mode is optional, you do not need to choose a faction solely to avoid open-world combat. The meaningful question is how central faction conflict is to the way you want to play. A player who rarely enables War Mode will feel the race, capital and social identity differences more strongly than the conflict itself. A player who deliberately spends time in War Mode should give the outdoor relationship and capital-city distinction considerably more weight.
Organized groups are much less divided
Modern group systems remove much of the old faction barrier once a supported activity begins. Premade Mythic dungeons, raids, rated arenas and rated battlegrounds can accept players from both factions. After the group enters the instance, members cooperate normally; Blizzard states that all members are friendly and able to assist one another in combat in a dungeon, raid or rated PvP match.
This does not make the factions identical. The mixed-faction behavior applies to the supported instanced activity, while the outdoor world and War Mode continue to enforce the relationship described above. Think of it as a boundary around the activity: the group can function together inside it even though the characters still belong to different political and cultural sides outside it.
How cross-faction play works in practice

The important word is premade: these rules let you organize a group with people from the other faction for the listed activities. They do not promise that every outdoor activity, social interaction or game system ignores faction. Plan your group around the activity you are actually going to run, not around the assumption that the entire world has become faction-neutral.
Cross-faction guilds have a practical limit
Cross-faction guilds let Horde and Alliance characters share a guild structure, which removes a major social obstacle for friends who prefer different races. Blizzard summarizes the remaining affiliation rule this way: “Guild affiliation with the Alliance or Horde will depend on the faction of the Guild Leader.” The guild can include both sides, but its displayed affiliation follows the leader rather than becoming a wholly neutral third faction.
That distinction is useful when you are deciding where to join. Ask which faction the guild leader uses and whether the group’s outdoor activities expect members to remain on one side. A cross-faction guild solves membership and much of the organized scheduling problem; it does not make opposite-faction characters friendly everywhere outside instances.

Warbands provide account-wide progression across characters regardless of faction. This means progress earned by one character can contribute to the shared account experience even when another character belongs to the opposite side. The system reduces the opportunity cost of experimenting: you can maintain a primary character with your friends and still create a second character for a race, story or play style that exists on the other faction.

Warbands do not erase the rules that apply to the individual character. Each character still has a faction, race, capital and outdoor-world relationship. Treat Warbands as an account-level safety net, not as a promise that one character can freely use every faction-specific context.
A decision process that works for new and returning players
Use the following order so that the most personal and durable factors are settled before the more changeable ones:
- List the races you would actually enjoy playing. Start at character creation and identify the race or races whose appearance, animations and cultural setting appeal to you. If one clear favorite appears, choose its faction unless a specific social commitment makes that impossible. Recheck the current official roster because race availability is subject to change.
- Map your regular group to a faction plan. Find out where your friends or guild leader play. A mixed-faction guild and cross-faction instances mean you may not need to copy every friend’s race, but the leader’s affiliation and outdoor plans still matter. Decide whether you want your main character to share the side used for outdoor activities or simply to meet the group inside supported instances.
- Estimate your outdoor-versus-instance split. Write down how a normal week will be spent. If most sessions are dungeons, raids or rated PvP, the cross-faction rules remove much of the practical pressure to match another player. If most sessions are outdoor questing, travel or War Mode, preserve time for the faction relationship and capital-city context when comparing your options.
- Decide whether War Mode is a feature or an occasional switch. War Mode is opt-in. Players who treat it as a central activity should choose the faction whose capital and conflict identity feel right, while players who rarely enable it can prioritize race and social fit without assuming they are locked into open-world PvP.
- Separate account concerns from character concerns. Ask whether you are choosing one main character or designing a long-term roster. Warbands make it reasonable to keep a main with your friends and add an opposite-faction alt later, so do not reject a preferred race solely because you fear losing all account progress.
Which faction fits common player situations?
You are completely new and have no guild yet
Choose the race whose fantasy you can imagine playing for dozens of sessions. Without an established group, there is no social requirement to inherit someone else’s faction. Begin with the character you are excited to log into, then use guild recruitment and cross-faction group options once you know what activities you enjoy. This approach also avoids basing your first character on a population slogan that has no current authoritative number behind it.
Your close friends already play one faction
Ask what they actually do together. If the plan is premade Mythic dungeons, raids, rated arenas or rated battlegrounds, you can choose a different faction and still join those supported activities. If the plan is outdoor questing or War Mode, matching their side removes the unfriendly or hostile relationship that otherwise remains between factions. A cross-faction guild can keep the social roster together in either case, but it does not remove the outdoor distinction.

You are joining an established guild
Find out the guild leader’s faction before you create a character. Cross-faction membership is supported, yet the guild’s affiliation follows the leader. Then ask whether the guild’s calendar emphasizes instanced content or outdoor play. A raid-focused guild may give you broad flexibility; a group that spends most of its time outdoors may make a same-faction character more convenient even when both factions are welcome in the guild.
You care primarily about rated PvP
For rated arenas and rated battlegrounds, premade groups can include both factions and cooperate inside the match. That makes your race fantasy and your preferred social group more important than an assumption that one faction has an inherent competitive advantage. If you also intend to spend substantial time in War Mode between matches, evaluate the outdoor relationship separately instead of assuming the rated rules cover the open world.
You mainly quest, explore or play in War Mode
Give faction identity its full weight. Your outdoor relationship with opposite-faction players remains unfriendly, and War Mode makes it hostile. Choose the side whose capital, visual language and conflict fantasy you want to inhabit, then confirm that the races available to it include the character you plan to play. Cross-faction instances will still be available when you occasionally join organized content, but they are not the center of this play style.
You want to collect characters on both sides
Use one character as the social anchor for your guild or friends and add the opposite faction when a different race or story appeals to you. Warbands provide account-wide progression across factions, reducing the cost of maintaining that second character. Keep the outdoor and War Mode rules in mind for each character, because account-wide progression does not turn them into faction-neutral avatars.
Which side has more players?
There is no current authoritative faction-population figure that can answer that question universally. Any broad statement that Horde or Alliance is simply “the bigger faction” needs a region, realm, mode, date and a transparent measurement method. Without those qualifications, a percentage or ranking can be misleading.
Population can still matter to a specific player, but the useful evidence is local and personal: the faction your friends use, the guilds recruiting in your region and the activities you intend to run. Cross-faction guilds and supported premade instances also reduce the impact of a general population imbalance. Treat an uncited global claim as a weak basis for a character you may play for months.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing a faction before choosing a race. If the character’s appearance and cultural fantasy do not appeal to you, an abstract faction label will not compensate. Start with the current race roster and let a genuine favorite lead.
- Assuming cross-faction means open-world neutrality. Guild membership and instanced cooperation do not change the unfriendly outdoor relationship or the hostile War Mode relationship. Plan outdoor sessions with that boundary in mind.
- Assuming friends must all reroll. Premade Mythic dungeons, raids, rated arenas and rated battlegrounds can mix factions. Check the activity’s group rules before asking anyone to abandon a character.
- Ignoring the guild leader’s faction. A cross-faction guild’s affiliation depends on its leader. Confirm that detail if guild identity, recruitment or outdoor events are important to you.
- Treating War Mode as mandatory. War Mode is opt-in and is enabled from Stormwind for Alliance characters or Orgrimmar for Horde characters. Decide based on whether you want that experience, not on fear that every outdoor session will force it.
- Quoting a universal population ranking. No properly scoped current figure is established here. Use local guild and friend information instead of repeating an uncited claim.
- Assuming the first choice is permanent for the account. Warbands support account-wide progression across factions. You can keep the original character and add an opposite-faction alt when a different race or play style becomes appealing.
A practical checklist before you create the character
- Open the current race roster and mark the races you would be happy to play repeatedly.
- Confirm which faction each finalist belongs to and choose the one with the strongest personal pull.
- Ask your friends or guild leader whether your shared time is mostly instanced, outdoor or War Mode play.
- If you are joining a guild, note the leader’s faction because it determines the guild’s affiliation.
- Decide whether War Mode is part of your regular plan; if it is, include the Stormwind or Orgrimmar capital context in the comparison.
- For a mixed roster, assign one character as your social main and plan additional characters around the races and stories you want. Warbands keep account-wide progression connected across factions.
The resulting choice is resilient: it gives you a character you actually want to play, keeps organized group options open and leaves room for an opposite-faction alt without pretending that outdoor faction boundaries have disappeared.
