Choose Hope in the City if you want to investigate a family disappearance through sketches, observations, and deduction in a highly stylized setting. Its documented design is closer to an art-led mystery than to a conversation simulator: you play 17-year-old Hope Song in Shenyang, China, return to a ransacked apartment, and work out what happened to your missing parents.

Choose another choice-driven adventure if your priority is relationship management, rapid dialogue decisions, or a confirmed network of alternate endings. Hope in the City is planned for Steam and Xbox on November 11, 2026, so its final branching structure, performance, and replay value should be judged from launch documentation and reviews rather than assumptions based on store tags.

What Hope in the City is

Hope in the City is a narrative mystery set in Shenyang, China. The official premise describes Hope Song as a 17-year-old aspiring artist who is determined to find her missing parents. When she returns home and discovers the apartment ransacked, the story begins as a personal search that also functions as an investigation.

The game’s central activity is evidence work. Hope makes sketches and records observations, then combines those observations into insights through a “thought-web” mechanic. In practical terms, you are expected to look closely, preserve what you notice, and decide how separate details fit together instead of simply selecting the most dramatic line of dialogue.

Steam positions the game with the tags mystery, investigation, puzzle, nonlinear, choices matter, interactive fiction, psychological noir, and single-player. Those tags communicate tone and intent; they do not establish a specific number of chapters, endings, routes, or permanently missable clues.

The artistic identity

The notebook material is part of the game’s identity rather than a decorative overlay. GamesPress credits Masha Loftus as writer and artistic director and says the notebook drawings were hand-drawn by Asian-Canadian artist Callista Antonio. That combination points to a presentation in which Hope’s act of drawing is tied to how the player understands the case.

The likely rhythm of play

  1. Inspect the environment. Search the apartment and other locations for details that can be recorded.
  2. Document what Hope notices. Sketches and written observations become the working record of the investigation.
  3. Connect observations. Use the thought-web to combine individual findings into broader insights.
  4. Make interpretive decisions. The choices matter tag indicates that decisions are part of the experience, although the exact scope of their consequences has not been published.

This loop favors players who enjoy forming a theory and revising it. It is a different promise from an adventure in which the main activity is steering every conversation toward a romance, alliance, or confrontation.

Is Hope in the City a choice-based game?

Yes, but the safest description is choice-driven investigative fiction, not a conventional dialogue-choice drama. The store listing explicitly uses “choices matter” and “nonlinear,” while the official description emphasizes investigation through sketches, recorded observations, and the thought-web.

That distinction matters when you compare it with other narrative adventures. In a dialogue-led game, the primary decision may be what Hope says to another character and how that person responds. In Hope in the City, the documented decision space begins with what you notice, what you record, and which observations you treat as connected. A player can therefore be making meaningful choices even when the screen is not presenting a traditional dialogue wheel.

The available information does not confirm whether choices create separate full-length routes, alter individual scenes, or mainly shape the final interpretation. Treat the “choices matter” label as a signal to expect agency, not as proof of a particular branching map.

1. Investigation versus dialogue choice

Hope in the City puts investigation first. You gather evidence, sketch, write observations, and use the thought-web to derive insights. If your favorite moments in an adventure come from examining a room, spotting an inconsistency, and building a theory, this is the strongest reason to put it on your list.

Look elsewhere first if your preferred decisions are primarily social: choosing who to trust, maintaining several relationships, negotiating conversations, or role-playing a personality through frequent lines of dialogue. Those systems may coexist with investigation in other games, but they are not the center documented for this one.

2. How consequences are likely to feel

The phrase “choices matter” tells you that decisions are intended to have consequences, but the published information does not say whether changes appear immediately, at chapter boundaries, or mainly in the ending. That makes consequence timing an important launch question.

Players who need visible feedback after every decision should wait for a review or a post-launch explanation of the branching structure. Players who are comfortable making an interpretation without instant confirmation may find the uncertainty appropriate to a mystery: the investigation itself is about testing whether your reading of the evidence is sound.

3. Puzzle and reasoning demand

The thought-web is the clearest indication that reasoning is not optional decoration. You are expected to combine observations into insights, which can require note-taking and comparing details over time. The game is therefore a better fit for someone who enjoys deduction than for someone seeking a mostly passive cinematic story.

There is no published difficulty scale, hint system, or accessibility setting for the thought-web in the available material. If you rely on adjustable puzzle difficulty, extensive hinting, or a formal notebook export, check the current platform description before purchase.

4. Mood and subject

The setting and premise establish a specific emotional profile: an urban mystery in Shenyang, a family disappearance, psychological tension, and an artistic notebook perspective. The “psychological noir” tag reinforces that mood.

Choose it for an intimate, serious investigation with a young protagonist. Choose a lighter adventure if you want comedy, fantasy spectacle, or a low-stakes travel story; nothing in the published premise suggests those are the game’s priorities.

5. Replay value

Nonlinear structure and meaningful choices can support replay, but they do not guarantee it. Replay value depends on whether a second playthrough reveals different clues, scenes, deductions, or endings. No official ending count or route map has been announced.

For a first run, keep your own notes and resist assuming that the first plausible explanation is correct. That approach makes a second playthrough useful if the game later proves to contain alternate interpretations, while avoiding the expectation that every choice must produce a separate campaign.

6. Access and platform fit

The documented launch platforms are Steam and Xbox. Language coverage is specific rather than universal: English has interface, full audio, and subtitles; Korean has interface and subtitles; Simplified Chinese has interface and subtitles.

If you need a language other than those listed, or require a particular accessibility feature, verify the live store page close to launch. The available listing information does not document controller support, screen-reader behavior, remappable controls, color-blind options, or a subscription-service inclusion.

Choose it if you enjoy building theories

The game asks you to preserve observations and connect them. That favors a player who likes asking “What does this detail imply?” and returning to earlier evidence after learning something new. Choose it if visual authorship matters to you

The protagonist is an aspiring artist, and the notebook drawings are hand-drawn. If you value an adventure with a strong visual point of view rather than a generic interface around a conventional script, the art direction is a meaningful differentiator.

Choose it if a contained personal mystery appeals to you

The missing-parent premise gives the investigation a clear emotional center. The story is not presented as an open-ended crime sandbox; it begins with Hope’s return home and her determination to find her family.

Look for another adventure if you need confirmed branching details

Do not buy on the assumption that the game has a specific number of endings or that every decision opens a completely separate route. Those details have not been established in the published materials.

Look for another adventure if conversation role-play is your main attraction

If you want to spend most of your time selecting dialogue, shaping relationships, or managing a party, the documented mechanics do not promise that emphasis. The available description gives investigation and deduction the leading role.

How it differs from common choice-driven adventure formats

Instead of comparing unsupported feature lists, classify the alternative you are considering by its dominant activity.

Branching cinematic adventures

These usually appeal to players who want frequent decisions during dramatic scenes and clear changes in later sequences. Compare their published route information with Hope in the City’s investigation-first loop. If you prefer seeing a consequence immediately after a tense conversation, a cinematic format may be the better match. If you prefer discovering why events happened by linking evidence, Hope’s thought-web is more relevant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Relationship-led narrative games

These focus on trust, romance, friendship, or conflict between characters. Their appeal comes from social choices and the emotional response of other characters. Hope in the City begins with a family disappearance and documents observation-based deduction instead, so choose it when the case itself is more important to you than managing a broad cast of relationships.

  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Investigation-heavy detective adventures

This is the closest structural family. The key comparison is how much freedom each game gives you to gather, organize, and interpret evidence. Hope’s distinctive documented tool is the thought-web, paired with sketches and recorded observations. When evaluating another detective adventure, check whether it asks you to form connections yourself or simply follow a sequence of prompted clues.

Interactive-fiction mysteries

Interactive fiction can range from text-led exploration to heavily illustrated investigations. Hope combines the interactive-fiction label with stylized notebook art and a visual thought-web. Choose it if you want a mystery whose interface reflects the protagonist’s artistic practice rather than a purely text-based presentation.

Does Hope in the City have different endings?

The available official information does not confirm an ending count. “Nonlinear” and “choices matter” indicate that decisions may alter the experience, but neither tag proves that the game has two, five, or any other number of endings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Until the developer or a post-launch guide documents the structure, treat alternate endings as unconfirmed. This is especially important if you are buying solely for replayable branches. The safer expectation is a narrative mystery in which your deductions and decisions have some consequence; the exact form of that consequence remains to be verified.

What to check before buying or starting

  • Release status: Confirm that the live Steam or Xbox listing still shows the date and edition you intend to purchase.
  • Language: Match your needs to the listed support: English interface, full audio, and subtitles; Korean interface and subtitles; or Simplified Chinese interface and subtitles.
  • Input: Check the current store page if you require controller play, remapping, or a particular control scheme; those details are not documented here.
  • Branching expectations: Do not assume a specific number of endings from store tags alone.
  • Puzzle tolerance: Be prepared to inspect evidence and connect observations rather than simply follow dialogue prompts.
  • Tone: Expect an urban, psychologically tense family mystery presented through an artist’s perspective.

Verdict: who should play it?

Hope in the City is the better choice for players who want an art-led investigation with a personal stake, visible evidence work, and a deduction mechanic that asks them to connect observations. Its Shenyang setting, hand-drawn notebook approach, and missing-parent premise give it a distinct identity among choice-driven adventures.

Pick another game first if your deciding feature is a published branching chart, a known ending count, or relationship-heavy dialogue. Those are valid preferences, but they are not established features of Hope in the City’s current documentation. For everyone else, the planned Steam and Xbox release is worth watching, with the final purchase decision best made after the live listings explain its controls, accessibility options, and consequence structure.
