Hope is an artist rather than a conventional private detective. Her sketchbook is central to the investigation: she draws what she notices, preserves visual details as evidence and connects related observations to uncover new insights. The design makes curiosity and interpretation as important as finding conventional inventory items or selecting dialogue options.
How the investigation mechanics work
Sketching as evidence
Important people, objects and scenes can become sketches. These drawings represent what Hope has observed and give the investigation a concrete record of clues rather than a simple list of clues in a menu.

Connecting observations
Progress comes from linking related pieces of evidence. When Hope recognizes a meaningful relationship between sketches or observations, that connection produces a breakthrough and moves the mystery forward. The available descriptions do not claim that every connection is procedurally generated; expect a designed narrative in which careful observation reveals the intended leads.
A different kind of detective story
Creative Director Judith Cheung said the team wanted “a different kind of mystery, where observation, curiosity and creativity are your greatest tools,” while setting the story in a part of Northeast China rarely explored in games. That approach makes the protagonist’s artistic perspective a core gameplay system, not just a character detail.

What to look for in the Steam Next Fest demo
- The opening mystery: How the game introduces the ransacked apartment and the disappearance of Hope’s parents.
- Sketchbook interaction: Whether drawing is a direct player action, an automatic record of discoveries or a combination of both.
- Evidence connections: How clearly the game communicates which observations can be combined and why a connection matters.
- Shenyang’s role: Whether locations, culture and local details affect the investigation rather than serving only as background art.
- Accessibility and language options: The demo’s store listing should identify the languages and accessibility features available in this preview.
Why this announcement matters
Steam Next Fest gives players a chance to evaluate Hope in the City’s central idea before committing to the full release. Its strongest point of distinction is the investigation method: Hope’s sketches and linked observations are intended to replace the usual action-heavy or inventory-driven detective formula. The Shenyang setting also gives the game a culturally specific foundation, while the simultaneous Steam and Xbox plans provide more than one launch route.
