Build a Honkai Impact 3rd team around the damage dealer you intend to use, then choose supports whose effects fit that battlesuit’s damage type, element, and kit. Check the enemy and game mode before settling on a lineup: breach effects, role overlap, and character synergy can matter, but no single team is best for every encounter.

Start with the job the team needs to do

Before choosing characters, identify the battlesuit that will do most of the team’s damage and the encounter you are preparing for. That gives you a practical starting point: the damage dealer sets the damage context, while the other slots should help that dealer perform or address a specific encounter need.

Then check the current in-game descriptions for the battlesuits and the mode you are playing. An old team recommendation may describe a real interaction but still be a poor choice for a different enemy, mode, roster, or game version. Treat “best team” as a question about a particular lineup and situation, not a permanent label attached to a character.

What the roles mean

  • Damage dealer (DPS): the battlesuit around which you are organizing the team’s damage. A battlesuit can also provide useful support effects.
  • Support: a battlesuit chosen in part for effects that help a teammate, such as a relevant damage buff or breach effect. A support may contribute damage too.
  • Team composition: the combination of characters and their effects in a particular encounter. A character’s role can change with the other battlesuits in the lineup.

Do not assume that DPS and support are mutually exclusive categories. The version 8.9 HoYoverse announcement describes Wings of Panacea as an SD-type Lightning damage dealer whose support role can increase teammates’ Elemental Breach or Physical Breach. That is an example of overlapping functions, not proof that she is the right fit for every team.

How do I tell whether a battlesuit is DPS or support?

Start with the battlesuit’s current description and stated role, then look at the effects that matter to the lineup you are planning. A damage dealer is the character you are organizing the team’s damage around; a support is selected partly for effects that help a teammate. Those are useful working definitions, not exclusive boxes. Wings of Panacea, for example, is described in HoYoverse’s version 8.9 announcement as both a Lightning damage dealer and a support that can increase teammates’ breach. Judge what a battlesuit contributes in the team you are actually using, rather than relying on a single label.

Match damage type and element before choosing support

For an elemental team, look for support effects that apply to the damage dealer’s element or damage mechanics. For a physical-focused team, assess support effects in the physical damage context instead. A support effect is not automatically useful just because it is powerful in another kind of team.

HoYoverse’s Jade Knight character guide positions her as Ice DMG support. That tells you the broad role to investigate when considering her for an Ice team; it does not establish that she is the best support for every Ice damage dealer or encounter. Read the character’s current in-game descriptions and check how the proposed lineup works together before committing to it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Elemental and physical breach are different checks

Breach can be one of the support effects that matters to a team, but elemental and physical breach serve different damage contexts. Do not treat the two as interchangeable or choose a support based on the word “breach” alone. First establish whether the intended dealer’s damage is elemental or physical, then verify which breach effect the support actually provides and whether it applies to the lineup you are building.

Effect to check Relevant team context How to use the check
Elemental Breach An elemental damage dealer, with the applicable element or mechanic confirmed in the current character descriptions. Confirm that the support’s effect fits the damage dealer rather than assuming every elemental team benefits in the same way.
Physical Breach A physical damage context. Check that the dealer and encounter make the effect relevant; do not substitute it for Elemental Breach without verifying the kit.

The version 8.9 announcement says Wings of Panacea can increase teammates’ Elemental Breach or Physical Breach as a support. Use that statement as a reason to inspect the relevant team interaction, not as a numerical comparison or a universal ranking: the announcement does not supply a current roster-wide team analysis.

How do I match elemental damage in practice?

Use a short verification sequence rather than matching characters by name or broad reputation. First, identify the intended damage dealer and confirm its element and damage type in the current game. Next, read the prospective support’s descriptions to determine what it actually helps: an effect for an elemental damage context should not be assumed to fit a physical-focused lineup, and an effect for one element should not automatically be generalized to every elemental team. Finally, check the enemy and mode you are preparing for. This process establishes whether the support’s stated role and effects fit your plan; it does not by itself prove that the lineup is the strongest available.

Jade Knight is a useful role-positioning example because HoYoverse presents her as Ice DMG support. That description helps narrow the question to Ice-team compatibility, but it does not answer every follow-up: which Ice damage dealer, which encounter, and which other teammate? The guide’s searchable text does not expose a specific best-team recommendation. Avoid filling that gap with an invented lineup; check the live game and test the candidates you can field.

Build a lineup with a repeatable decision process

  1. Name the encounter and mode. Decide what you are preparing for and check the current enemy and mode conditions. Team performance can change with the enemy, its mechanics, and the mode.
  2. Choose the intended damage dealer. Start with the battlesuit you want to build around, then confirm its damage type, element, and relevant effects in the current game.
  3. Look for support effects that fit. Check whether a candidate supports the dealer’s damage context. Verify breach and other kit effects individually instead of relying on a character’s label or reputation.
  4. Check role overlap and team interactions. A support may deal damage, or a damage dealer may support teammates. Consider what the full lineup does, not just each battlesuit’s assumed role in isolation.
  5. Account for your roster and investment. A theoretical lineup is not useful if you cannot field it or if a different available option better fits your needs. Compare only teams you can actually use.
  6. Try the team in the intended encounter. Assess whether it handles the encounter’s mechanics and whether its roles and effects work as expected. If it does not, revisit the damage match, support effects, and lineup rather than treating a copied team list as binding.

A practical preflight check before you copy a team

Before you spend time rebuilding around a recommendation, write down the assumptions behind it. Which battlesuit is the intended dealer? What damage type and element does the recommendation support? Which enemy or mode is it meant for? Which support effects are named, and do their current descriptions match the role the guide claims? Does the lineup rely on an interaction between particular characters, or is it simply a list of names? These questions expose the difference between a transferable team-building idea and a version-specific recipe.

Then compare the recommendation with your actual options. A lineup you cannot field is not a practical choice, and a lineup that fits a different encounter may not solve the problem in front of you. If the guide does not identify a mode or enemy, treat that missing context as a reason to test cautiously, not as proof that the team works everywhere. There is no need to claim a precise performance gap when the available examples do not provide measured comparisons.

After testing, note what the lineup did well or poorly in the encounter you chose. Did the support effect match the dealer’s damage context? Did the team cover the encounter’s mechanics? Did the role interactions work as expected? The goal is not to produce a universal ranking from one run; it is to decide whether this composition fits your intended use better than another team you can actually field.

Compare candidate teams by fit, not by an unsupported ranking

If you are choosing between two lineups, compare them on the same encounter and use the same decision criteria. The available sources do not provide current numerical comparisons across teams, so a precise ranking or performance claim would go beyond the evidence. These criteria help explain why one candidate may be a better fit for your situation without pretending that it is universally superior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision criterion Question to ask Why it matters
Damage match Does the support fit the dealer’s element and damage type, and does that fit the enemy and mode? A support effect suited to a different damage context may not answer the team’s actual need.
Breach and other support effects Which effects does the candidate provide, and are those effects relevant to this dealer? Elemental and physical breach are distinct; assess the effect the kit actually supplies.
Encounter coverage Does the lineup address the enemy’s mechanics and type? An otherwise coherent composition may still be a poor match for a particular fight.
Roles and interactions How do the battlesuits work together, including any damage or support role overlap? Role labels alone do not describe the complete lineup’s function.
Availability and investment Can you field and use the team you are considering? Your practical choice depends on your available roster and investment, not only on a theoretical composition.

Keep the comparison controlled: judge both candidate teams against the same mode and encounter, and ask the same questions of each. If one candidate has a relevant support effect and the other does not, describe that difference as a fit consideration. Do not turn it into a numerical damage claim unless you have verified numbers for the specific version and conditions. The examples discussed here are useful for understanding roles and interactions, but they do not establish a current, roster-wide order of teams.

Use character examples with their version context attached

Jade Knight: an Ice-support role example

HoYoverse’s Jade Knight guide presents her as Ice DMG support and includes equipment recommendations. Its searchable text does not establish a specific best team recommendation, so do not infer one from the role description alone. Use the guide to understand her stated positioning, then verify the intended team in the current game.

Wings of Panacea: damage and support functions can coexist

In its version 8.9 announcement, published June 25, 2026, HoYoverse describes Wings of Panacea as an SD-type Lightning damage dealer whose support role can increase teammates’ Elemental Breach or Physical Breach. The example illustrates why it is worth inspecting a battlesuit’s complete kit rather than forcing it into just one role. It is an update announcement, not a full meta analysis or a guarantee that she belongs in any particular lineup.

Use the announcement for the limited claims it supports: it identifies the battlesuit’s damage-dealer role, Lightning damage context, and the possibility of supporting teammates through one of two breach types. It does not establish which teammate she should be paired with, which mode is best for her, or how she compares numerically with other candidates. Those are separate questions to answer from current in-game descriptions and the encounter at hand.

Coralie: a dated, player-authored example

A HoYoLAB creator’s version 8.4 beta guide, dated August 21, 2025, describes Coralie as a Fire damage dealer and discusses support use through elemental and physical breach. It proposes team contexts for Grail of Infinitude and Law of Ascension. Because this is player-authored beta guidance, check the live game and current character descriptions before applying those team contexts.

This example can help illustrate why a character may be discussed in more than one team context, but it should not be detached from its beta status or date. The guide’s proposed contexts are not evidence of a present-day best lineup. If you are considering one, verify that the battlesuit descriptions and encounter conditions still support the intended interaction in your current version.

The Herrscher trio: synergy can be specific

An older version 6.4 beta player guide describes a trio built around the Herrscher of Finality, Herrscher of Origin, and Herrscher of Truth. The example is useful for understanding that some compositions are built around particular character interactions. Its age and beta context mean it should not be treated as a current recommendation.

A named trio is not automatically a reusable template for a different dealer or encounter. Its value as an example is the reminder to look for interactions across the full lineup. Before copying any such combination, check what each battlesuit contributes, whether the original guide was written for beta or live play, and whether its assumptions match the mode you are playing now.

Why old team lists can mislead

A team guide describes a particular version, roster, and set of assumptions. Even when the underlying character interaction is real, it may not answer your current question: which lineup fits your encounter, available characters, and mode now? Version labels and publication dates help you judge how much context a recommendation needs.

  • Check whether the guide is official or player-authored. A community guide can be helpful, but it is not a HoYoverse recommendation.
  • Read whether it covers a beta version or a released version. Beta guidance may not describe the live game.
  • Separate a character’s role description from a complete team recommendation. A support label alone does not name the best teammates.
  • Look for a specific encounter or mode. A lineup discussed without that context should not be assumed to work equally well everywhere.

The most recent official example covered here is the version 8.9 announcement from June 25, 2026. It offers a useful description of Wings of Panacea’s functions, but it does not establish a current best team for each mode or a universal roster ranking. Use current in-game descriptions to check the characters you plan to field.

Source type matters as much as date. HoYoverse’s Jade Knight page is useful for the official role positioning and equipment recommendations it presents, but the searchable text does not reveal a specific team recommendation. The Wings of Panacea update announcement is official, yet it is still an announcement rather than a full comparison of teams. The Coralie and Herrscher-trio examples come from player-authored guides, and both carry beta-era version context. Make claims only as broad as the source allows.

Common team-building mistakes to avoid

  • Picking supports before deciding on a damage dealer: this can leave you with effects that do not fit the team’s main damage context. Choose the intended dealer first.
  • Confusing elemental and physical support: breach effects are not interchangeable. Verify the type of effect and the dealer it is meant to support.
  • Treating a character label as the whole kit: a battlesuit may contribute damage and support. Evaluate its effects in the lineup rather than assuming its role is exclusive.
  • Copying an old or beta lineup without checking it: retain the example’s version and authorship context, then confirm whether it fits the live game and your encounter.
  • Calling a team universally optimal: encounter, enemy, mode, roster, and patch can change the choice. State the situation a lineup is intended for.

Frequently asked questions

How do I build a team in Honkai Impact 3rd?

Choose the damage dealer and encounter first. Confirm the dealer’s damage type and element, then select teammates whose support effects and interactions fit that damage context and the fight. Check your current roster and the live character descriptions, and test the lineup in the intended mode rather than treating an old team list as a rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which characters should I use as DPS and support?

That depends on the lineup and encounter. Choose the battlesuit you want to organize the team’s damage around, then look for support effects that help it. Some battlesuits can contribute both damage and support: HoYoverse’s version 8.9 description of Wings of Panacea is one example. A character’s label is a starting point, not a complete team recommendation.

Is Jade Knight the best support for every Ice team?

No such universal conclusion follows from her role positioning. HoYoverse’s guide presents Jade Knight as Ice DMG support, but its searchable text does not establish a specific best team. Check the intended damage dealer, encounter, other teammates, and current in-game descriptions before deciding whether she fits.

Are Elemental Breach and Physical Breach interchangeable?

No. They relate to different damage contexts. Verify whether the intended dealer is elemental or physical, then check which breach effect a candidate support actually provides and whether it fits the team. HoYoverse’s version 8.9 announcement says Wings of Panacea can increase teammates’ Elemental Breach or Physical Breach, but it does not provide a universal ranking of those effects or of teams that use them.

Can an old beta team guide still be useful?

It can illustrate a role or a specific character interaction, but its version and beta status matter. The version 8.4 Coralie guide and version 6.4 Herrscher-trio guide are player-authored examples, not current universal recommendations. Verify the live character descriptions, mode, and encounter before using either lineup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the best team for a particular mode?

There is no universal answer established here. The right composition depends on the damage dealer, enemy and encounter mechanics, mode, available roster, investment, and current patch. Compare candidate teams against the same situation using those criteria, and avoid precise rankings when you do not have verified current comparisons.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I build a team in Honkai Impact 3rd?

Choose the damage dealer and encounter first. Confirm the dealer’s damage type and element, then select teammates whose support effects and interactions fit that damage context and the fight. Check your current roster and live character descriptions, and test the lineup in the intended mode.

Which characters should I use as DPS and support?

That depends on the lineup and encounter. Pick the battlesuit you want to organize the team’s damage around, then look for teammates whose effects help it. Roles can overlap: HoYoverse’s version 8.9 description presents Wings of Panacea as both a Lightning damage dealer and a support.

Is Jade Knight the best support for every Ice team?

Her official guide positions her as Ice DMG support, but it does not establish a specific best team. Check the intended dealer, encounter, other teammates, and current in-game descriptions before deciding whether she fits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Elemental Breach and Physical Breach interchangeable?

No. They apply to different damage contexts. Verify the dealer’s damage type and check which breach effect the support actually provides. HoYoverse’s version 8.9 announcement says Wings of Panacea can increase teammates’ Elemental Breach or Physical Breach, but it does not rank teams using those effects.

Can an old beta team guide still be useful?

It can illustrate a role or a character interaction, but its date and beta status matter. The version 8.4 Coralie guide and version 6.4 Herrscher-trio guide are player-authored examples, not current universal recommendations. Check live descriptions and the intended encounter before applying them.

What is the best team for a particular mode?

The answer depends on the damage dealer, enemy mechanics, mode, available roster, investment, and current patch. Compare candidates against the same situation; the examples here do not establish a current universal ranking.

The Bottom Line

Pick the encounter and damage dealer first, then match support effects—including the correct breach type—to that battlesuit’s damage context. Check role overlap, roster availability, and current descriptions, and treat dated team guides as examples rather than universal rankings. The best composition is the one that fits the fight and characters you can field now.
