Start with the Valkyries you actually use and the team you are building—not a character, weapon, or stigmata set named in an older guide. There is no verified universal upgrade order for every beginner. Check the current in-game goals, available materials, and the equipment that works with your team before committing resources.
What should a beginner upgrade first?
Use your current team and the live progression screens as the decision points. The available guidance supports building a coherent team and investing in Valkyries and equipment that serve it, but it does not establish that Valkyries, weapons, or stigmata always come first. The right choice depends on whether an upgrade helps a Valkyrie you use, whether the equipment is usable with that Valkyrie, and what materials the game currently requires.
In practice, treat an upgrade as a match between three things: your active team, the item or Valkyrie that would benefit, and the materials you can afford to spend. If one of those links is missing—for example, equipment that does not fit the Valkyrie you are investing in—do not assume that upgrade is your best next move.

- Look at your current goals in the game. Use the live progression objectives as a guide to what you can work toward now. Do not rely on an old list of Starter’s Manual missions or rewards; its current contents were not verified.
- Choose the team you intend to use. Favor upgrades that support Valkyries on that team rather than spreading materials across characters you may not use. This is a decision framework, not a claim that one particular team is best for all beginners.
- Check equipment compatibility. Before committing materials to a weapon or stigmata, confirm in the current game that it can be used with the relevant Valkyrie and supports your intended team.
- Check the material cost and source. The live upgrade screen can show what an upgrade requires. Compare that requirement with materials you already have and with the current activities that provide them.
- Spend only when the upgrade serves the plan. If you are uncertain whether a character or equipment piece belongs in your team, wait for more information rather than treating a name from an older guide as a must-build recommendation.
How to decide between Valkyries, weapons, and stigmata
Beginners often phrase the choice as “Which is more important: Valkyrie team comps, weapons, or stigmatas?” There is no verified universal winner. Instead of ranking the categories in isolation, compare each candidate investment against your actual team and the current material requirements.

Where to get progression experience and upgrade materials
An older HoYoLAB beginner guide describes story stages, chronicles, and open-world story quests as activities that grant Captain experience and experience to participating Valkyries. It also describes material expeditions as a source of materials for weapon and stigmata upgrades. Because that guide is several years old, treat these as broad orientation rather than a guarantee that a particular activity, reward, or menu path is unchanged in the current version.

- Check the current activity and reward screens before spending time on an activity for a specific material.
- Collect available challenge rewards. The guide recommends doing so to replenish progression materials, but current reward contents were not verified.
- Use the current in-game descriptions to confirm which activities award Captain or Valkyrie experience in your version.
These checks matter because an activity’s existence, rewards, or availability can change. The older guide is useful as a pointer to types of progression activities, not as a current schedule or reward table.

How to use the Starter’s Manual without following stale advice
The Starter’s Manual search result describes phased goals and rewards, but its reference page could not be opened and is not an official source. Its specific missions and rewards therefore cannot be treated as current facts.

- Open the Starter’s Manual in your game and read the goals and rewards displayed there.
- Use those live goals to identify activities that fit your current progression, rather than copying a mission list from an older guide.
- Before spending resources to complete a goal, check whether the reward and cost make sense for your team and current materials.
The useful principle is to consult the live manual; the available evidence does not support naming a particular goal, phase, or reward as a current beginner priority.
What to avoid before spending scarce resources
Do not copy an old build or item recommendation blindly
A HoYoverse character guide page opened to a Valkyrie Triumph entry and displayed equipment examples including Blood Dance and Turgenev stigmata. That page does not establish that the character or equipment is a current beginner recommendation. Treat an example as an example, then verify whether it fits your own Valkyrie and the live game.

Do not spend because an item is famous or appears in a guide
Popularity, an equipment example, or a recommendation written for an earlier version does not answer the beginner’s actual question: will this help my team, can my Valkyrie use it, and is the resource cost worthwhile now? Verify those points in-game before investing.

- Have I confirmed in the live game that the equipment is usable with the relevant Valkyrie?
- Do I know the current material requirement and where those materials can be obtained?
- Have I checked current challenge rewards and progression goals instead of relying on an old reward list?
- If this is a supply decision, have I checked the live regional screen rather than assuming old banner or guarantee information still applies?
If you cannot answer one of these questions, pause and verify it in-game. That is safer than following a fixed priority list that the available evidence cannot support.
