What happens depends on how your Honeywell thermostat is powered. If it relies on batteries, dead cells can blank the display and stop the thermostat from controlling heating or cooling. If it is wired to AC power, batteries may be backup only, so the result can be different. Check the exact model and its manual before replacing batteries.
What happens when the batteries run out?
A battery-powered thermostat may lose its display and stop sending heating or cooling commands. A Honeywell/Resideo manual for the T8131A/B describes that model’s behavior precisely: “After the batteries are completely dead, the bAt Lo indicator disappears, leaving a completely blank display.” The manual adds that the thermostat and heating/cooling system have stopped working. This describes the T8131A/B, not every Honeywell thermostat. Read the T8131A/B manual (69-0887).
Other models may show a low-battery alert before power is lost. For example, the T4 Pro guide says its low-battery icon appears about two months before depletion. That lead time is specific to the T4 Pro and should not be assumed for other models. See the T4 Pro Series guide.

Does the thermostat use batteries for power or backup?
Identify the thermostat’s power arrangement before assuming the HVAC system has failed. The T4 Pro guide says batteries are required when the thermostat is not wired for AC power, but are optional backup when it is wired for AC. Backup behavior varies by model: Honeywell’s maintenance document says backup batteries can preserve programming and the display through most power outages, and that a blank display during an outage may mean backup batteries are missing or need replacing. How to replace the batteries safely
- Find the model number. Check the thermostat label or documentation, then open the matching owner’s manual. Honeywell models differ in power source, battery count, size, and compartment procedure.
- Confirm the battery type and quantity. Use only the size specified for your model. The T4 Pro and the cited 69-0740B programmable thermostat use two AA alkaline batteries, while the RTHL111B1001/U1 specification lists two AAA alkaline batteries. These examples are not interchangeable guidance for other models. See the 69-0740B manual and the RTHL111B1001/U1 specification.
- Follow that model’s replacement instructions. The T4 Pro guide recommends alkaline batteries and explains how to remove the thermostat from its mount, insert batteries, and reinstall it. Other models may open or reattach differently.
- Check operation. Confirm the display returns, set a reasonable temperature, and verify that heating or cooling responds.
If replacing batteries does not restore operation
A fresh set of batteries does not rule out other faults. If the screen remains blank or the HVAC system does not respond, follow the exact model’s troubleshooting instructions rather than assuming the thermostat is still out of battery. The T87RF/Y87RF guide distinguishes a low-battery symbol from no power, an RF communication error, and a defective thermostat. Consult the T87RF/Y87RF guide. If the manual’s checks do not resolve the issue, contact a qualified HVAC professional.
