A 2026 experiment found that honeybees adjust how hard they recruit nestmates after learning whether earlier food-location information was confirmed, unverifiable or deceptive. Bees whose information was confirmed increased the number of waggle-dance circuits; bees that received no feedback reduced their effort; and bees whose recruits were sent to an empty feeder did not increase it. The result suggests confidence-like control of signaling, not human-like lie detection.
What the 2026 study found
The study by Karmi L. Oxman, Ofer Feinerman and Sharoni Shafir was published on 21 May 2026 in Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology, volume 80, article 73. It examined whether a honeybee changes the strength of its waggle dance according to how reliable its previous food-location signals proved to be.
In a waggle dance, a forager conveys the direction and distance of a food source through repeated circuits. The new experiment focused on the dancer’s effort: how many circuits it performed in successive dances. That is different from measuring whether followers actually left the hive or reached a newly advertised feeder.

How reliability was manipulated
The focal bee could always obtain sucrose. What changed was what recruits experienced after following its earlier signal:

- Liar condition: the focal bee advertised a feeder that was empty when recruits arrived.
- Unverified condition: recruits were captured, so they could not provide feedback showing whether the information worked.
After this learning stage, each focal bee advertised a new feeder location during the test stage. Researchers then compared its dance circuits across sequential test dances.

What “deemphasizing misinformation” means
“Misinformation” is an analogy for unreliable or unverifiable food-location information, not evidence that bees understand truth and falsehood as people do. The measured response was signal strength: the number of dance circuits. It was not a judgment expressed in words, a conscious admission of lying or a demonstrated ability to identify a false claim.

The three treatments also produced different responses. A liar bee did not reduce its effort in the test; it simply failed to show the increase observed in the honest condition. The unverified bee reduced its effort. That distinction matters because it prevents the result from being summarized as “bees punish liars.” The experiment did not establish punishment, intent or a social penalty.

The test stage is therefore best understood as an assay of the dancer’s recruitment effort, not a direct test of successful recruitment to the second feeder.

Why this is not proof that bees detect lies
Earlier work provides an important boundary on the interpretation. In a 2008 replication of the Lake Experiment, bees following dances toward an implausible feeder location were just as likely to leave the hive as control bees. The investigators reported no evidence that honeybees assess whether a location is plausible or reject a dance because the destination sounds unlikely.
The 2026 result is narrower and more specific. It shows that a dancer’s later signaling can depend on whether earlier information was confirmed, left untested or proved deceptive. That is compatible with an internal reliability or confidence-like adjustment, but it does not demonstrate human-style lie detection or a follower’s active rejection of “fake news.”

Why would a bee tone down a waggle dance?
The colony-level logic is straightforward without requiring human-like motives. A bee that repeatedly receives confirmation that its information works may invest more effort in recruiting. When recruits cannot verify the information, reducing the signal may limit continued promotion of an uncertain source. When recruits encounter an empty feeder, the absence of an increase prevents deceptive information from receiving the same positive reinforcement as confirmed information.
Prof. Sharoni Shafir described the possible function this way: “Since the bee is recruiting for the sake of the colony, and not for personal interests, the system is apparently designed to promote honest dancers and to quiet down signals in the face of ambiguity”. The quotation describes a proposed colony benefit; it does not establish that an individual bee consciously reasons about honesty.

Waggle dances also depend on their audience
A separate 2026 study found that the dance itself changes with social conditions. When actual or potential followers were scarce, dancers encoded direction and distance less precisely. The authors linked those changes to movements that seek an audience and to social feedback from the interaction.
Together, the findings support treating waggle dancing as bidirectional communication rather than a one-way broadcast. Information quality and signaling effort can depend on what happened after previous signals and on whether an audience is available. Neither result, however, shows that followers independently verify a proposition in the human sense.
How broad is the evidence?
The focal experiment was conducted at the Benjamin Triwaks Bee Research Center in Rehovot, Israel, between November 2015 and July 2016. The colonies were based mostly on the Italian honeybee strain Apis mellifera ligustica. Researchers used five colonies, individually marked up to 800 bees, and analyzed 24 focal bees producing 195 dances.

- The sample describes a controlled study of a limited number of focal dancers, not every honeybee population.
- The result concerns sequential dance circuits, not a measured increase in food collected at the second feeder.
- Follower behavior did not differ between treatments in this test.
- The liar and unverified conditions cannot be treated as interchangeable: one supplied misleading feedback, while the other supplied no feedback.
The most defensible conclusion is therefore precise: honeybees can modulate recruitment effort according to the reliability of prior signaling experiences. They may amplify signals that were confirmed and reduce or fail to amplify signals surrounded by uncertainty, but the evidence does not show that bees “know when another bee is lying” or routinely reject implausible information.
