Yes. A 2026 observational study in and around Cambridge, UK, recorded managed honeybees bumping, displacing and chasing wild flower visitors, while other pollinators sometimes avoided honeybees altogether. The findings show direct interference competition—not only competition for the same nectar and pollen—but they do not establish that every hive causes a population decline.
What the Cambridge study observed
Five sites near managed colonies
Researchers from Anglia Ruskin University watched flower visitors at five sites in and around Cambridge during the 2023 and 2024 flowering seasons. Every site was within 300 metres of a known honeybee colony. The observations focused on bramble (Rubus fruticosus) and ivy (Hedera helix), two important seasonal sources of nectar and pollen.
Across 93 hours of field observation, the team recorded 300 pairs of insects meeting on flowers. Visitors were classified as honeybees, bumblebees, solitary bees, hoverflies, or “other” insects, including butterflies, beetles and wasps.
How an interaction was scored
The peer-reviewed paper, published in Ecological Entomology in 2026, uses the term interference competition for direct restriction of another pollinator’s access to a flower. A “win” occurred when one insect gained access and the other lost it. A “share” meant both insects fed without a conflict.

How honeybees pushed other visitors aside
Avoidance was common
Other flower visitors avoided honeybees in 28.4% of recorded bramble interactions and 35.6% of ivy interactions. “Barging aside” therefore describes observed behavior: an approaching insect may leave, be bumped away, or be actively chased rather than feeding alongside a honeybee.
Honeybees won more encounters than expected
Honeybees won interactions more often than expected from the mix of visitors. At least 20% of their winning outcomes involved visible displacement or chasing, rather than a quiet difference in arrival time or a flower simply becoming empty.

Ivy bees were an important exception
Ivy bees contested honeybees successfully more often than the other wild pollinators recorded. The result does not mean every wild species loses every encounter; competitive ability varied among pollinators and between plants.
What higher honeybee numbers were associated with
Sites and observation periods with more honeybees also had fewer non-Apis pollinators. On bramble, a doubling of honeybee density was associated with a 14% reduction in bumblebee abundance. The pattern is consistent with honeybees restricting access to shared flowers, but the study did not assign hives to plots or randomly control their density.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
It documents direct competition
The study adds physical interference to the better-known concern that dense colonies can consume nectar and pollen. Honeybees sometimes prevented another insect from using a flower at that moment, which can change who gets access to a patch even when flowers are not yet depleted.
It is not a universal estimate of hive impacts
Because the work was observational and covered five Cambridge-area sites, it cannot by itself prove that every hive causes a decline in wild-pollinator populations. The results also come from bramble and ivy during their flowering windows; they should not automatically be generalized to every plant, season or region. Distance from colonies, local hive density, weather and the composition of the wild-pollinator community can all change the outcome.

Why the result matters as hive numbers rise
National Bee Unit figures reported by The Guardian indicate that the number of registered UK beekeepers rose from 19,000 in 2010 to 47,000 in 2025. More managed colonies can mean more honeybees concentrated around the same urban or agricultural flower resources, although beekeeper totals are not a direct measure of colony density at any one site.

That is an association within this study, not a tested forecast for a particular climate scenario. Lead author Victoria Buckle said future warming in the UK could intensify interference by dominant honeybees, making coexistence especially important where hives are concentrated, including urban areas.

Can managed honeybees and wild pollinators coexist?
The authors present the finding as a conservation and coexistence issue, not a blanket call to stop beekeeping. Their stated aim was to understand how competition occurs so wild pollinators—many of which perform essential ecological roles—can be conserved alongside managed colonies.
What the findings support discussing
- Hive-density planning: consider how many colonies are placed in a limited flower-rich area and how close they are to important wild-pollinator habitat.
- Habitat conservation: protect and restore diverse flowering resources so wild species are not forced into the same small number of heavily used patches.
- Plant and season context: evaluate competition separately for plants such as bramble and ivy and for their distinct flowering periods.
- Monitoring: track both managed honeybees and wild visitors rather than treating honeybee activity alone as evidence of pollination health.
The study did not test a seed mix, habitat kit, beekeeping technique or other intervention, so no product or practice can be presented as a proven remedy from these results. Its practical message is narrower and more useful: managed colonies and wild pollinators share flowers, and local planning should account for the possibility that honeybees can win access by making other visitors leave.
