A honeybee swarm may stay clustered for an hour to a few days while scout bees search for a nest site. It can sting if disturbed, so keep your distance, keep people and pets away, and leave it alone. If bees are inside a wall or building, or someone is under attack, the situation needs a different response.

What you may be looking at

A swarm is part of how a honeybee colony reproduces. A group leaves an established colony, gathers temporarily in a cluster, and sends scout bees to look for a place to nest. The cluster is a staging point, not necessarily the swarm’s future home. Once a suitable site is found, the bees break up and fly there. Iowa State University Extension and the Delaware Department of Agriculture describe this temporary clustering behavior.

A swarm may contain several hundred to several thousand worker bees, according to Delaware’s page, updated February 12, 2026; that is an approximate description, not a way to identify a particular group by counting it. You do not need to estimate its size or get closer to inspect it. A cluster visible on a tree or shrub can be left undisturbed while you arrange help if needed.

The key distinction is whether bees are temporarily clustered outdoors or appear to be living inside a structure. A hanging group on a branch is not the same thing as a nest established in a wall, soffit, or other cavity. Do not approach closely or probe an opening to decide which it is; use the location and ongoing activity as information for a local beekeeper or pest professional.

How long will a bee swarm stay?

A cluster may remain stationary for an hour to a few days. Delaware gives that range and says duration depends on weather and how long scout bees need to find a new nest site; Iowa State Extension gives the same broad estimate. It is not a deadline or a prediction for an individual swarm. A cluster that remains longer than expected does not, by itself, establish whether the bees have moved into a structure.

When scouts find a suitable site, the cluster can disperse and fly to it. The timing is variable, so do not rely on waiting a set number of hours as a safety measure or as a reason to delay action if people are exposed. If the bees are in a low-traffic outdoor location and no one needs them moved, observation from a safe distance is usually all that is required.

Do honeybee swarms sting?

Yes. A swarm is generally less defensive than a colony guarding an established nest, but it is not harmless. Delaware and Iowa State explain that swarming bees have fed before leaving and are away from the brood and food stores they would otherwise defend. Both sources also caution that bees may sting if provoked. The practical takeaway is to avoid contact rather than test whether a particular cluster is calm.

Do not touch, shake, spray, swat, throw objects at, or attempt to collect the bees. Keep children and pets from approaching, and do not stand underneath the cluster. If the cluster is near a path or shared entrance, direct people away without walking close to it. In a shared setting, UC Agriculture and Natural Resources’ San Diego County FAQ suggests notifying others and, if possible, roping off the area or putting up a warning sign. A sign or barrier helps communicate the hazard; it does not make it safe to approach or replace local assistance.

What should you do when you see a swarm?

If it is an outdoor cluster away from people

  1. Keep your distance and leave the cluster where it is. Do not try to make it move by spraying it, knocking it down, or disturbing the object it is on.
  2. Keep other people and pets away from the area. If no one is at risk and relocation is not needed, there may be no action beyond leaving the bees undisturbed. Iowa State Extension says that in most situations involving a swarm on a tree, shrub, or house, nothing needs to be done.
  3. If you want it relocated, contact a local beekeeper or beekeeping association. A county or state extension office can be a starting point for locating local guidance. Availability varies by location, and not every beekeeper will collect every swarm.

If the cluster is in a busy or shared place

Prioritize limiting access, not moving the bees yourself. Keep people from gathering near it, use a barrier or warning sign only if you can do so without approaching the cluster, and contact a local beekeeper or relevant local authority for assistance. The appropriate contact can depend on the site—for example, a property manager may need to coordinate access at a shared building. Local removal arrangements and rules vary across the United States.

If bees are entering a wall or building

Ask for professional assessment rather than attempting DIY removal. A colony established in a cavity differs from a temporary cluster: Florida’s agriculture department describes an established colony as a nest with comb, stored pollen and honey, and developing bees. A colony may actively defend its nest when disturbed. Avoid sealing an opening, spraying into it, or opening the wall yourself; these actions do not establish that the bees or nest have been removed.

There is a further reason to avoid treating a wall colony as a simple swarm. Maryland Extension warns that killing bees without removing the nest can leave wax and honey inside the wall, where they can seep, smell, and attract other pests. A qualified local professional can assess the situation and explain the available removal approach. Florida has its own rules and licensing context described on its agriculture department page; those Florida-specific requirements should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.

Temporary swarm or established colony?

What you observe What it may indicate Practical response
A visible cluster gathered outdoors on a branch, shrub, or similar object A temporary swarm cluster searching for a nest site; its appearance alone does not guarantee how long it will stay. Keep away and leave it alone; contact a local beekeeper if relocation is wanted.
Bees associated with an opening in a wall, soffit, or other building cavity Possibly a colony established inside the structure; a cavity nest can contain comb, stores, and developing bees. Do not disturb or attempt removal. Arrange professional assessment.
Bees actively attacking a person An immediate safety emergency, regardless of whether the bees were first noticed as a cluster or near a structure. Retreat quickly to enclosed shelter, protect the face and airways, and call emergency services if someone is being attacked.

These are practical response categories, not a do-it-yourself identification test. A person who cannot tell whether bees are clustered outside or using a cavity should keep clear and describe what they can see from a safe distance when contacting local help. Do not inspect a roofline, wall opening, or suspected nest at close range in order to complete the comparison.

What if the bees attack?

Move away quickly and run toward an enclosed shelter, such as a building or vehicle. Protect your face and airways as you retreat, and do not swat at the bees. The University of Florida IFAS guidance on living with African honey bees recommends getting to shelter and says to call 911 if someone is being attacked. Its guidance concerns African honey bees; the immediate retreat advice is useful in an attack, but Florida-specific species or regulatory details should not be generalized to every location.

Once inside shelter, check whether anyone has been stung and seek urgent emergency care for difficulty breathing, widespread hives, vomiting, or swelling away from the sting site. These symptoms can indicate a serious reaction. If someone is being attacked, call emergency services rather than trying to handle the bees or return to the area to retrieve belongings.

Who should you contact?

  • Outdoor swarm you want moved: Start with a local beekeeper, beekeeping association, or extension office. Explain where the cluster is and whether people need to pass nearby.
  • Bees apparently inside a building: Seek a professional who can assess a cavity colony and the nest material, not just the visible bees. A local extension office or appropriate local agency may help identify the right service in your area.
  • Cluster in a public or high-traffic location: Keep people away and notify whoever is responsible for the site, as well as seeking local bee-removal guidance.
  • Active attack: Get to enclosed shelter and call emergency services if someone is being attacked.

Beekeepers, local agencies, and removal requirements differ by place. The Florida Department of Agriculture page describes Florida’s own removal and licensing context; it is not a nationwide licensing guide. For other states or localities, confirm requirements with the relevant local authority rather than assuming a rule or service arrangement is universal.

What not to do

  • Do not spray or poison a cluster, try to knock it down, or attempt to handle or collect it.
  • Do not block a suspected entrance or open a wall to investigate a colony.
  • Do not assume that a quiet cluster cannot sting, or that a swarm will leave by a particular hour.
  • Do not crowd around it to take a closer look. Share only observations you can make without approaching.

The first two cautions matter for different reasons: disturbing a cluster can provoke stings, while killing bees in a cavity without removing the nest can leave comb and honey behind. University of Georgia Extension’s guidance on honey bee swarms and bees in walls also treats temporary swarms and wall colonies as distinct situations. When the location makes the distinction uncertain, keep clear and request an assessment instead of experimenting.
