Honey Household renters insurance is contents cover for tenants—not insurance for the rented building. Its advertised benefits include cover for eligible belongings against insured events, with optional extensions, but the policy schedule and current policy documents determine what an individual renter actually has. Honey does not publish a representative renters premium in the materials reviewed here, so there is no basis for calling it cheap or comparing it as a value winner.
What does Honey renters insurance cover?
Honey describes renters insurance as cover for a tenant’s furniture, appliances and personal belongings against loss or damage caused by an insured event. Theft, malicious damage, severe weather and legal liability are among the features it highlights. The rented building itself is not insured on the renter’s behalf. Each benefit remains subject to the policy’s conditions, exclusions, limits and the cover selected.
Honey’s renters product page advertises home-office equipment cover up to $20,000, transit cover in specified circumstances and visitor contents cover up to $500 per claim. It also offers optional accidental-damage, mobile-phone, individual-item, small-business and away-from-home cover. Treat these as product-page highlights, not proof that every item is included in a particular quote: check the quote, Certificate of Insurance and applicable wording for inclusion, limits and excess.

How much contents cover should you choose?
Honey provides a contents estimate, but says the renter is responsible for choosing a sum insured that meets their needs. Use the estimate as a starting point, then consider the cost of replacing belongings at today’s prices across every room. Honey recommends comparing its estimate with an independent contents calculator.
#1 Best Overall
A simple inventory can make that estimate more reliable. Record major belongings and approximate replacement costs in a notebook or spreadsheet, then check valuable categories against the policy’s item limits. An inventory is a practical aid, not an insurance requirement.
Check category limits and valuable items
The Household Insurance Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), prepared 7 September 2023, gives general limits that may matter to renters: jewellery, watches and gold or silver artefacts are limited to $2,000 per item and $6,000 in total; collections and memorabilia to $2,000; office equipment to $20,000; and works of art and specified decorative items to $2,000 per item and $12,000 in total. Optional benefits may increase some specified limits. These are figures from that 2023 PDS, not a guarantee of the limits in a current quote; check the current PDS and any Supplementary PDS.
Honey describes eligible contents as covered on a new-for-old replacement basis. Under the cited 2023 PDS, if a claim is settled by replacement, new items replace old ones; clothing and floor carpets older than 10 years have their as-new value reduced for age, wear and tear. Confirm the wording that applies to your policy, especially if it began or renewed under newer documents.
What happens if you claim?
Waiting period
Honey says fire and flood damage are not covered during the first 72 hours after cover starts when the renter has no existing insurance. Check the applicable PDS and policy schedule for the exact wording and any exceptions.
Excess
Your selected excess—the amount you pay toward a claim—is shown on your Certificate of Insurance. Honey says a higher excess generally reduces the premium but increases your cost if you claim. Compare quote options against an amount you could afford to pay; the right choice depends on your circumstances, and no general premium or excess recommendation can replace a quote-specific assessment.
Documents to read
Honey’s FAQ identifies the Certificate of Insurance, PDS, any applicable Supplementary PDS and Key Facts Sheet as the documents containing cover details, limits and excesses. Read the documents supplied for your own policy: the schedule records your selections, while the current wording sets the applicable terms.
Who underwrites Honey policies now?
Honey’s homepage says policies starting or renewing before 1 October 2026 are underwritten by RACQ Insurance Limited. Policies starting or renewing on or after that date are underwritten by Zurich Australian Insurance Limited. The date of your policy start or renewal therefore matters; do not assume an older PDS names the underwriter for a newer policy.
Honey promotes smart sensors, but its homepage footnote describes the sensor-linked discount as applying to Home or Home & Contents insurance when the sensor kit remains operational. The materials reviewed do not establish renter eligibility for a sensor kit or that discount. Check the renter-specific quote and terms rather than assuming it applies.

Questions to check before buying
- Are belongings outside the home covered? Honey advertises optional away-from-home cover and transit cover under specified circumstances. Check whether the option is on your quote and which belongings, locations and conditions it covers.
- Are flatmates covered? The available product summary does not establish how a shared household or each flatmate is treated. Ask Honey and check who is named or insured in the quote and policy documents.
- Do you need to list jewellery or electronics separately? Compare each item’s replacement value with the general category limits in the current wording. Check whether an individual-item option is available and what conditions apply.
- What if you move? The materials reviewed do not establish how a move affects cover or whether cover applies in transit for a specific move. Confirm the process and dates with Honey before relocating.
- Does the quoted premium make sense? No representative Honey renters premium or matched competitor quote is established here. Compare current quotes using the same address or rating area, contents sum insured, excess, valuables, optional benefits and start date.
How to compare Honey with another policy
Compare policy documents and quote details on equal terms, not just headline benefits. Use the same contents amount and excess, and check whether the policies treat the following in the same way:
- Severe-weather definitions and theft conditions
- Replacement basis and category sublimits
- Temporary accommodation or living expenses
- Waiting periods, exclusions and optional cover
- Belongings away from home and items in transit
For Honey, the current quote, Certificate of Insurance and applicable PDS or Supplementary PDS are the key references for deciding whether advertised features fit your needs.
