Honda NSX and Acura NSX are not competing cars. They are market names for the same NSX model line: “Acura” was used in North America, while “Honda” was used in Japan and many other markets. The differences that matter are usually the generation, production era, market specification and special edition—not the badge itself.

The original NSX (1990–2005) was a mid-engine sports car built around an all-aluminum monocoque. The redesigned second-generation car added a twin-turbo V6, three electric motors and Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). Its final Type S edition had specifications that do not apply to every second-generation NSX.

Honda NSX vs. Acura NSX at a glance

Question Answer
Are they different cars? No. The names identify the sales market: Acura in North America, Honda in Japan and many other markets.
When did the original car launch? Acura went on sale in the United States in August 1990; the Honda-badged NSX went on sale in Japan in September 1990. North American model-history listings classify it as model years 1991–2005.
What changed in the second generation? It was a full redesign with a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6, three electric motors and Sport Hybrid SH-AWD.
Where were they built? The first generation was built in Japan from 1990 through 2005. Second-generation production was centered at the Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio.
What is the highest published output? The regular 2020 U.S. NSX was listed at 573 combined horsepower and 476 lb-ft of combined torque. The 2022 Type S was listed at 600 combined horsepower and was limited to 350 units worldwide.

Those figures describe specific editions and model years. They should not be used as a single specification for every NSX sold in every country.

Why one car has two badges

Acura is the North American name

Honda used its Acura luxury-performance division for the United States and Canada, so North American cars carry Acura NSX badging. Honda’s historical timeline records the U.S. launch in August 1990. Acura’s model-history material lists the first-generation car as available for the 1991 through 2005 model years, which explains why a launch in 1990 and a 1991 model-year designation can both be correct.

Honda is the name used in Japan and other markets

In Japan, the same model was sold as the Honda NSX, with sales beginning in September 1990. Honda also used the Honda name in markets outside North America. “Honda NSX” therefore does not automatically mean a different generation, engine or body; it primarily tells you which market’s branding is being discussed.

Badge differences do not prove identical worldwide equipment

The shared model identity does not establish that every component, trim, transmission, safety feature or calibration was identical in every country. A market-specific listing is still necessary when you need to verify an individual car. The safe conclusion is that the badges identify the commercial market, while the exact equipment depends on generation, year and region.

The real dividing line is generation

First generation: the aluminum-monocoque NSX

The original NSX debuted in 1990 as a mid-engine sports car. Its defining structural feature was an all-aluminum monocoque, a construction approach that made the car’s lightweight architecture central to its identity. Honda built first-generation cars in Japan from 1990 through 2005.

When a listing says “Honda NSX” or “Acura NSX” without a year, it may be referring to this original car. The badge alone cannot tell you whether the car is an early example, a later first-generation model or a second-generation hybrid. The production date and model generation must be checked separately.

Second generation: a clean-sheet redesign

Honda described the successor as having “undergone a full redesign for the first time in 26 years since the introduction of the original NSX” in an August 25, 2016 release. The Honda-badged version entered the Japanese market in the 2016–17 period. This is not a minor facelift of the aluminum-monocoque car; it is a substantially different architecture and powertrain.

The second-generation NSX retained the mid-engine concept but added electrification and all-wheel drive. Its production was centered at the Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio, and the car was supplied globally. That change in manufacturing location is one of the clearest historical differences between the two generations.

Construction and chassis: what changed

Original car: aluminum structure as a defining feature

The first-generation NSX is associated with its all-aluminum monocoque. In a monocoque, the body and structural shell perform much of the vehicle’s load-bearing work rather than relying on a separate conventional frame. For this car, the material and construction method were not incidental details; they were part of Honda’s engineering identity for the model.

Successor: a redesigned platform built around hybrid hardware

The second-generation car changed the engineering priorities. Instead of carrying forward the original architecture, Honda developed a new platform to package a twin-turbo V6, three electric motors and the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system. No complete country-by-country materials specification is available, so it would be inaccurate to reduce the newer car to a claim that it simply used the same aluminum structure with additional motors.

For identification purposes, “aluminum monocoque” points to the original generation, while “twin-turbo V6,” “three motors” and “Sport Hybrid SH-AWD” point to the redesigned generation.

Powertrain differences

Original-generation engine and transmission variants

The original NSX used the engine and transmission combinations offered during its long production run. Those variants changed over time and by market, so a generic statement about one engine or gearbox should not be applied to every 1990–2005 car. If a specification matters—such as the exact transmission, emissions equipment or factory trim—use the vehicle’s model year and market documentation.

Second generation: twin-turbo V6 plus three electric motors

The redesigned NSX used a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 together with three electric motors. Its Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system is a three-motor all-wheel-drive arrangement, not merely a rear-drive car with a small electric assist. The hybrid system is therefore a generation marker as well as a performance feature.

Acura’s published U.S. specifications for the regular 2020 model year give the second-generation NSX 573 combined horsepower and 476 lb-ft of combined torque. “Combined” is important: the figures describe the integrated output of the gasoline engine and electric system, not the V6 alone.

2022 Type S: a final-edition specification

Acura’s 2022 brochure lists the Type S at 600 combined horsepower. Honda’s August 3, 2021 release calls the Type S “the final model of the second-generation NSX.” The brochure also limits production to 350 units worldwide.

That output and production cap belong specifically to the 2022 Type S. They should not be copied into a listing for a regular second-generation NSX, and they say nothing about first-generation cars.

Production geography and what it tells you

Generation or edition Production information How to use the clue
First-generation NSX, 1990–2005 Built in Japan. A Japanese-built car from this period is consistent with the original generation, but the badge still depends on its sales market.
Second-generation NSX Production centered at the Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio; vehicles supplied globally. An Ohio-built NSX is associated with the redesigned hybrid generation.
2022 Type S Final second-generation model; 350 units worldwide. Verify Type S documentation rather than assuming every late car is a Type S.

Production location is useful for separating generations, but it is not a substitute for a vehicle identification number, build record or market-specific documentation. A car can be imported, registered in a different country and rebadged by an owner, so the current location of the vehicle does not prove where it was originally sold.

Launch dates, model years and why listings look inconsistent

National sale date

Honda’s historical timeline gives the Acura launch in the United States as August 1990 and the Honda launch in Japan as September 1990. These are market sale dates, not model-year labels.

North American model year

Acura’s North American model-history listing describes the original NSX as model years 1991–2005. A vehicle can therefore be introduced for sale in calendar year 1990 while being identified as a 1991 model year. Treating those labels as interchangeable creates an apparent contradiction that is really just a difference in date convention.

Second-generation timing

Honda’s documentation places the Honda version’s Japanese market entry in the 2016–17 period. Because launch timing and model-year conventions differ by country, use the local registration and factory records when dating an imported car. Do not infer a precise model year solely from the month in which a press release was issued.

How to identify the car a listing is actually describing

  1. Record the badge and original sales market. Acura generally indicates North American marketing; Honda indicates Japan or another non-North American market. This is a starting point, not a generation diagnosis.
  2. Check the production or model year. A 1990–2005 date points toward the first generation; a later date points toward the redesigned car. Confirm the local model-year convention.
  3. Look for the powertrain description. An all-aluminum monocoque reference is characteristic of the original. A twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6, three electric motors and Sport Hybrid SH-AWD identify the second-generation architecture.
  4. Check the factory location. Japan is associated with first-generation production; the Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio is associated with the second generation.
  5. Separate standard cars from the Type S. A claimed 600 combined horsepower and 350-unit worldwide production limit should be tied to the 2022 Type S, not generalized to all later NSXs.
  6. Verify the market-specific equipment. Imported cars can differ in emissions equipment, safety features, trim names and other details. Use documentation for the exact country and year before treating a specification as universal.

Common misconceptions

“The Honda is the cheaper version of the Acura”

The badge does not establish a lower or higher mechanical grade. Honda and Acura are the market names used for the same model line. Price differences in a particular listing can come from age, condition, import costs, rarity, equipment or currency—not from a factory rule that one badge is an inferior NSX.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Honda NSX means first generation, and Acura NSX means second generation”

Both generations were sold under both naming conventions, depending on market. Generation must be established from the year, architecture and powertrain.

“Every second-generation NSX makes 600 horsepower”

The 600-horsepower figure belongs to the 2022 Type S. Acura’s regular 2020 U.S. specification is lower, at 573 combined horsepower. A model-year and edition check is essential.

“A 1990 launch means it is a 1990 model everywhere”

Launch date and model year are separate labels. The United States received the Acura in August 1990, while North American model-history material lists model years beginning in 1991.

“The two badges guarantee identical equipment worldwide”

They establish the model family and market branding, not complete global specification uniformity. Country-specific regulations and option lists can produce differences that require local documentation to verify.

Which comparison should you make?

If you are comparing two used listings

Compare generation and model year before comparing badges. A first-generation Acura and a second-generation Honda are separated by an entirely different vehicle architecture, so badge-based sorting can produce a meaningless match-up. Then compare the original sales market, documented equipment and service history.

If you are researching the NSX’s history

Use the 1990–2005 Japanese production run to describe the original era, and the Ohio-centered production of the redesigned hybrid to describe the successor. Keep the 2022 Type S in a separate category because Honda identifies it as the final second-generation model and Acura limits it to 350 worldwide units.

If you are checking a specification sheet

Ask three questions: Which generation is it? Which model year and market? Is it a standard car or the Type S? Those answers determine whether a published output figure, date or equipment description applies.

Official timeline and source context

  • 1990: Acura NSX sales begin in the United States in August; Honda NSX sales begin in Japan in September.
  • 1991–2005: North American model-history listings identify the original NSX across these model years; Honda records first-generation production in Japan through 2005.
  • August 25, 2016: Honda describes the successor as a full redesign, the first in 26 years.
  • 2016–17: The Honda-badged second-generation car enters the Japanese market in this period.
  • 2020 model year: Acura publishes 573 combined horsepower and 476 lb-ft of combined torque for the regular U.S. NSX.
  • August 3, 2021: Honda identifies the Type S as the final model of the second-generation NSX.
  • 2022: Acura’s brochure lists the Type S at 600 combined horsepower, with production limited to 350 worldwide units.

The sales tally Honda reported in 2005—more than 18,000 NSXs worldwide by the end of June—was a cumulative figure at that date, not a current total and not a North American-only count.

The bottom line for the badge question

“Honda NSX vs. Acura NSX” is mainly a question about market naming. Acura is the North American badge; Honda is used in Japan and many other markets. The meaningful technical comparison is between the first-generation, aluminum-monocoque NSX and the fully redesigned second-generation hybrid NSX. Once you identify the generation, market, model year and edition—especially whether it is the 2022 Type S—the apparent Honda-versus-Acura mystery largely disappears.
