The Honda HRU19M1 Buffalo Buck is an older Australian-market push mower designed for residential lawns, with both catching and mulching capability. Honda’s historical brochure lists a GCV160 engine and 60-litre catcher, while CHOICE’s public review page identifies its test as pre-2019 and keeps detailed scores behind membership. This is therefore a review of the documented model and what a buyer can verify—not a claim about fresh performance testing or current availability.
What mower is the HRU19M1 Buffalo Buck?
Honda’s Australian support portal identifies the model as “HRU19M1 (MBBU)” and provides a model-specific owner-manual entry. Honda’s historical brochure names it the “HRU19M1 Buffalo Buck Mulch & Catch,” and CHOICE’s review page uses the same model name. Check the mower’s serial number and configuration before assuming a surviving machine matches general specifications.
Honda positioned the HRU19M1 for an average residential block and medium lawns. Its push design means the operator supplies the forward force; the documented specifications do not describe a self-propelled drivetrain.

Honda’s brochure information was valid as of 31 August 2015. These are historical manufacturer specifications, not measurements verified on every used machine.

What the public review can—and cannot—tell you
CHOICE identifies its test as “Pre 2019.” The public page exposes the mower’s basic details, including alloy body, 11 cutting positions, 47 cm cutting width, 33 kg weight and 12–70 mm height range. Its expert rating, catcher and mulching scores, ease-of-use scores and other detailed results are member-only. The public information does not establish current cut quality, reliability, starting performance or value, and it is not a recent independent test.

Do not confuse it with the current HRU19
Honda’s current Australian HRU19 listing is for a later, distinct model. Its specifications must not be substituted for the HRU19M1’s.

Honda also lists mulching capability, recoil start, auto choke, engine brake, cast-aluminium chassis and unleaded 91 fuel for the current HRU19. Those details are for the current listing, not proof of the HRU19M1’s configuration. Honda lists a five-year domestic warranty for the current HRU19 and a commercial warranty of five years for the motor and two years for the frame, subject to conditions; those warranty terms do not establish coverage for an older HRU19M1. Honda says its current-page prices were accurate as of 1 August 2025, are recommended retail prices including GST, and that specifications and price may change. What to check before buying a used HRU19M1
The available sources document the design and specifications, but do not establish how a particular used mower has been maintained or performs. Inspect the individual machine rather than relying on model reputation.
- Identity and configuration: Match the model and serial information to the Honda manual entry. Confirm that the catcher and any mulching components belong with the machine.
- Mulching plug: Honda’s historical brochure says the HRU19M1 Mulch & Catch includes a plug. Verify that it is present and compatible; do not assume a plug from another HRU19 generation fits.
- Engine and service: Ask for service history and check that the engine starts and runs properly. Honda warns that incorrect inspection or maintenance can cause product failure and directs owners to a retailer, dealer or maintenance shop.
- Cutting and collection parts: Inspect blade condition, catcher condition and the mulching setup. Check that replacement parts can be sourced for the exact model.
- Deck and controls: Look for damage or deterioration to the alloy deck and confirm that the height adjustment and engine-brake controls operate correctly.
- Fit for the yard: Consider whether a push mower, its weight, cutting width and catcher capacity suit the lawn’s size, terrain and your preferred balance between catching and mulching.
Price, warranty and support for an older mower
CHOICE lists $939 on its HRU19M1 page, but the listing says the mower was tested before 2019 and does not establish that it is currently available at that price. Honda’s historical brochure also lists $939, with information valid as of 31 August 2015. Neither figure is a current offer or a reliable guide to a used mower’s value.

The historical brochure stated a four-year domestic warranty for the HRU19M1, but that period-specific statement does not show that a used or remaining-stock mower is covered today. Ask a Honda dealer to confirm warranty status, parts support and serial-specific configuration. Honda’s HRU19M1 owner-manual portal provides the model-specific manual entry.

The documented package is most relevant to someone seeking a residential push mower with both catching and mulching functions and who can inspect the particular machine’s condition and parts support. The sources do not support a performance verdict or a claim that it is a better buy than a current mower. Compare the actual alternatives by drive type, cutting width and height range, catcher capacity, weight, lawn terrain, local servicing and the exact model generation.
