The Honda HRU196M1PWUY is an Australian-market push petrol mower, but the public evidence supports only a qualified review: CHOICE lists legacy specifications and a pre-2019 test period, while its expert rating and detailed scores are available to members only. Treat its listed $1,149 price as historical, and do not assume specifications or warranty terms for newer HRU196 variants apply to this exact M1 model.
What the public review establishes
CHOICE identifies the HRU196M1PWUY as a push lawnmower with catcher and mulching capability. Its page gives the test period as “Pre 2019” and lists an alloy body, 11 cutting positions, a 10 mm lowest cut, a 70 mm highest cut, a 48 cm cutting width and a weight of 37 kg. CHOICE also lists a price of $1,149, but the test period makes that a dated reference rather than a current quote. CHOICE’s HRU196M1PWUY page does not publicly expose its expert rating, detailed test scores, pros and cons, recommendation, satisfaction or reliability results. There is therefore no basis in the public page to assign the mower a score or claim that it beat or lagged another model.
How it relates to current HRU196 models
Honda’s current product material covers the HRU196 Buffalo Pro family, including HRU196PWUH and HRU196PBUH variants. Honda describes a 19-inch alloy deck, 54-litre polymer catcher, mulching, swing-back blades and a GXV160 four-stroke engine. The two variants differ in their brake system: the PWUH is an Engine Brake Push mower, while the PBUH is a Blade Brake Push mower. These current-family descriptions do not establish the complete equipment list for the older HRU196M1PWUY. The specification gap is particularly important for dimensions and cutting height. CHOICE lists the M1 model at 48 cm wide, with 11 positions spanning 10–70 mm. Honda’s specification page lists current PWUH and PBUH variants at 470 mm, with 11 stages from 16–80 mm. Those figures describe different model contexts; they should not be merged into one specification or treated as proof that the M1 has the current family’s adjustment range. Price: separate the legacy listing from current-family figures
The exact M1PWUY page at CHOICE lists $1,149, alongside a pre-2019 test period. That is useful only as historical context; it is not evidence of the mower’s present sale price or availability. Honda listed recommended retail prices of $1,349 for the HRU196PWUH and $1,449 for the HRU196PBUH, accurate as of 1 August 2025. Those prices apply to the named current-family variants, not the M1PWUY, and Honda says prices may change and availability can vary by dealer. Warranty depends on model, date and use
Honda publishes separate warranty terms for purchases before 31 August 2025 and purchases on or after 1 September 2025. The newer schedule names M2 products, including HRU196M2PWUH and HRU196M2PBUH; that is not, by itself, a warranty statement for the M1PWUY. The applicable terms also depend on qualifying conditions, whether use is private or commercial, and geography. What owner reviews can and cannot tell you
ProductReview.com.au marks its HRU196M1 listing discontinued and showed 61 reviews with a 3.2 overall score when accessed in 2026. The comments are mixed, touching on performance, weight, service and wear. These are self-selected owner submissions, not controlled tests, and the count and score can change over time. - Read the complete model suffix from the product label or documentation. Do not rely on “HRU196” alone to identify a variant.
- Confirm whether the mower is the catcher/mulcher configuration you need and how the particular unit changes between modes.
- Use the M1-specific figures above as the legacy reference; do not substitute current PWUH/PBUH cutting specifications or equipment without confirmation.
- For a used mower, inspect its condition and service history directly. Public sources here do not establish current stock, a current M1 price, or an independent score available without CHOICE membership.
- Ask Honda or an authorised dealer to confirm warranty eligibility against the exact model, purchase date and intended use.

Verdict
The HRU196M1PWUY appears in public sources as a 48 cm, 37 kg alloy-deck push mower with 11 cutting positions and catcher/mulching capability, but its publicly accessible independent test record is incomplete: CHOICE withholds the rating and detailed results. The safest conclusion is not that it is a proven winner or poor performer, but that buyers should verify the exact M1 variant, treat its public price as historical, and assess condition and applicable warranty before purchase. Current HRU196-family details are useful for context only when their different suffixes are kept clear.
