If HomeView stays dark immediately after installation, first identify which HomeView product you have. Apple HomeView is powered through USB-C, while cameras sold in TELUS HomeView plans may use a doorbell transformer, an indoor/outdoor power adapter, or (in older systems) power-line communication modules. The correct voltage, cable, outlet, and wiring checks differ by model.

Start with the safe, external checks: confirm the outlet or breaker works, reseat every connection, inspect the cable or terminal wires, and bypass any third-party mount. Do not assume the camera has failed until those checks pass. Electrical work on doorbell or other fixed wiring should be performed by a licensed professional.

Identify your HomeView system before troubleshooting

The name “HomeView” covers several unrelated product families. Use the table below to match the symptoms and power path to the right procedure.

System Normal power path First checks
Apple HomeView USB-C cable and USB-C power adapter Adapter rating, cable, outlet, device port, and any warning icon
Apple HomeView Wall Mounted Separately sold USB-C cable and adapter, often routed through a third-party mount Required 20W rating, mount bypass, cable and outlet
TELUS HomeView doorbell camera Existing doorbell transformer and two low-voltage terminals Breaker, terminal tightness, wire separation, and 10–24V AC supply
TELUS HomeView indoor/outdoor camera Power cable connected to a conventional working outlet Outlet, breaker, cable connection, and a 60-second power cycle
Legacy PLC-connected HOMEView PLC modules carrying network data over household electrical wiring PLC order, electrical noise, outlet choice, and camera discovery

If you cannot identify the model, look at the power connector. A USB-C port points to Apple HomeView; two small screw terminals point to a wired TELUS doorbell; a standard plug indicates a TELUS indoor/outdoor camera; and separate PLC modules indicate an older HOMEView installation.

Apple HomeView: check the USB-C power specification

Apple’s 2026 guidance specifies a USB-C cable and USB-C power adapter rated at at least 30W and supporting 15V at 2A or higher for the standard HomeView model. A HomeView Wall Mounted model has a different minimum: its separately sold USB-C cable and adapter must be rated at at least 20W and support 9V at 2.22A or higher. A charger that fits physically but does not meet the model’s voltage, current, and wattage profile can leave the device unpowered.

When those requirements are not met, Apple says the display can show a lightning-bolt icon with a yellow warning triangle. Treat that icon as a power-compatibility warning, not proof that the HomeView hardware is defective.

Run Apple’s power checks in order

  1. Inspect the adapter. Make sure it is firmly inserted in the outlet and that its housing, plug, and cable are not damaged. Use the correct minimum rating for your model rather than relying only on connector shape.
  2. Fully disconnect power. Unplug the adapter from the wall, then disconnect the USB-C cable from HomeView. This removes a marginal connection from the test.
  3. Clean the contact points. With power disconnected, wipe the adapter, HomeView port, and both cable ends with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Do not put liquid or metal objects into the port.
  4. Reconnect firmly. Plug the adapter into the outlet and the cable into HomeView, checking that each connector is fully seated.
  5. Try a known-good outlet. Move the adapter to an outlet that you know powers another appliance. If the device starts there, the original receptacle, switch, or circuit needs attention.
  6. Substitute both cable and adapter. Apple’s recommended isolation test is another compatible USB-C cable and compatible USB-C power adapter that meet the applicable rating. Change one component at a time when possible so you know which part corrected the problem.
  7. Bypass a third-party wall mount. For HomeView Wall Mounted, remove the unit from the mount and connect it directly to compatible USB-C power. If it powers on when removed, the mount, its cable path, or its installation is the likely fault. Contact the mount manufacturer or the professional installer rather than modifying the mount wiring yourself.

How to interpret the result

  • It powers on with another adapter or cable: retire the failed or incompatible accessory and use one meeting the stated electrical profile.
  • It powers on only outside the mount: leave the device bypassed and have the mount installation inspected.
  • The warning icon remains with known-good, correctly rated accessories: document the adapter ratings and contact Apple support or the installation provider.
  • There is no light or icon at all: repeat the outlet, cable, port, and adapter checks before treating the unit as a hardware failure.

TELUS HomeView doorbell camera: verify low-voltage wiring

A TELUS HomeView doorbell camera depends on the home’s existing doorbell circuit rather than a USB-C charger. TELUS specifies standard doorbell wiring of 10–24V AC. The transformer, breaker, chime path, and both conductors must all be intact for the camera to start.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the breaker and visible connections

  1. Look at the camera LED. An unlit LED means you should troubleshoot power first; an illuminated LED indicates that the camera is receiving some power and may have a separate setup or network issue.
  2. Check the relevant breaker. Confirm that the circuit supplying the doorbell transformer has not tripped. Resetting a tripped breaker once is reasonable; if it trips again, stop and arrange professional service.
  3. Inspect both terminals. Each doorbell terminal must be tight, with its wire held securely under the terminal. A loose conductor can produce an intermittent or completely dead camera.
  4. Keep the conductors separated. The two wires must not touch each other. A short can remove power and may trip the circuit or damage equipment.
  5. Confirm the supply type. The expected range is 10–24V AC, not an arbitrary DC adapter. Measuring fixed wiring is electrical work; follow TELUS’s advice and use a licensed professional or electrician for testing.

Homes without standard doorbell and chime wiring may require new low-voltage wiring or a transformer change. TELUS says a qualified electrician may be needed in that situation. Do not improvise a mains connection or connect a USB charger to the doorbell terminals.

When a doorbell camera still has no power

If the breaker is on, both terminals are tight and separated, and a professional confirms a supply within the 10–24V AC range, the remaining fault may be in the transformer, cable run, chime arrangement, or camera. Have the electrician isolate those components. If the electrical path tests correctly, contact TELUS support for device-specific diagnosis rather than repeatedly removing and reconnecting the wires.

TELUS HomeView indoor/outdoor camera: test the plug-in path

The indoor/outdoor camera uses a conventional working outlet and a removable power cable. The quickest way to separate an outlet problem from a camera problem is to test the entire path with a known-good receptacle.

  1. Use a traditional outlet. Plug the camera into a normal wall outlet, not a switched outlet that may be off or a receptacle controlled by an unknown timer.
  2. Reseat the power cable. Disconnect and reconnect the cable at the camera and adapter, making sure each side is fully inserted.
  3. Test the outlet with another device. A lamp or other known-working appliance can confirm that the receptacle supplies power. If it does not, check the breaker and have the outlet repaired.
  4. Try another outlet. If the camera remains dark, move the complete assembly to a different known-good receptacle.
  5. Reboot correctly. Unplug the camera for 60 seconds, then reconnect it. The full minute allows the previous power state to clear before startup.

Do not open the camera or cut its cable to bypass the supplied adapter. If it remains unlit after the outlet, breaker, cable, and 60-second reboot checks, provide TELUS support with the model, LED behavior, and results of each test.

Legacy HOMEView systems using PLC modules

Older HOMEView installations may use power-line communication (PLC) modules. These systems can have electrical power while still losing camera communication. A legacy HOMEView manual identifies extremely poor household power wiring and electrical noise as causes of missing Ethernet/Data flashes or cameras that do not appear in an IP search.

Reconnect PLC equipment in the documented order

  1. Unplug the PLC modules and all cameras.
  2. Reconnect the PLC module nearest the router first.
  3. Add the cameras back one at a time.
  4. After each addition, check whether the camera appears in the system’s IP search or whether the Ethernet/Data indication returns.
  5. If communication fails, move the PLC to another outlet and repeat the test. Avoid assuming that two outlets on different circuits will carry the signal equally well.

This sequence distinguishes a PLC-link problem from a camera power problem. If a camera’s local power indicator works but the camera is absent from discovery, concentrate on PLC placement, wiring quality, and electrical noise. If the camera has no power indicator, resolve its local adapter or outlet issue first.

Choosing a replacement adapter, cable, or wiring path

Replace only the component that matches the product’s electrical design. The connector alone is not enough.

Replacement decision Required specification or condition What not to substitute
Apple HomeView adapter USB-C adapter rated at least 30W and supporting 15V at 2A or higher A lower-rated phone charger or an adapter with an unknown voltage profile
Apple HomeView cable Compatible USB-C cable in good condition, tested with the correct adapter A frayed, bent, contaminated, or intermittently connected cable
Apple HomeView Wall Mounted adapter USB-C adapter rated at least 20W and supporting 9V at 2.22A or higher The standard model’s specification assumed without checking the wall-mounted requirement
TELUS doorbell camera wiring Two secure, separated conductors supplied by standard 10–24V AC doorbell wiring A DC supply, mains voltage, or improvised USB wiring
TELUS indoor/outdoor camera The supplied or compatible power cable and a known-good conventional outlet A damaged cable, switched dead outlet, or unverified extension arrangement

Keep the adapter’s voltage and current capability with the product documentation when buying a replacement. For Apple models, the wattage minimum and voltage/current profile are separate requirements; meeting only one does not establish compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safety boundaries and escalation

Plug-in checks are generally limited to unplugging equipment, inspecting visible damage, cleaning dry contacts, and testing a known-good outlet. Stop immediately if you smell burning, see melted insulation, hear arcing, find a hot receptacle, or repeatedly trip a breaker.

  • Use a licensed professional for fixed wiring. TELUS specifically advises consulting a licensed professional or electrician before electrical testing or work.
  • Do not work on energized terminals. A doorbell circuit is low voltage, but its transformer is connected to the home’s electrical system.
  • Do not defeat a mount’s wiring. If direct USB-C power works with a wall-mounted Apple unit, send the mount issue to its manufacturer or installer.
  • Escalate with evidence. Record the model, adapter rating, outlet tested, breaker status, LED or warning-icon behavior, and whether bypassing the mount changed anything.

A practical decision path

  1. Identify the power method. USB-C means Apple; two terminals mean a TELUS doorbell; a conventional plug means a TELUS indoor/outdoor camera; PLC modules indicate a legacy HOMEView system.
  2. Prove the source. Test the outlet or breaker, or have a professional verify the doorbell circuit.
  3. Prove the connection. Reseat the cable, tighten and separate visible doorbell conductors, or reconnect PLC modules in order.
  4. Use the model’s exact specification. Apply Apple’s 30W/15V at 2A-or-higher requirement, the wall-mounted 20W/9V at 2.22A-or-higher requirement, or TELUS’s 10–24V AC doorbell range.
  5. Remove optional hardware. Bypass a third-party mount or move a plug-in camera to another outlet.
  6. Escalate only after isolation. Contact Apple, TELUS, the mount installer, or a licensed electrician with the completed test results.

What the official guidance does—and does not—establish

The published guidance provides electrical specifications and troubleshooting sequences, not a failure-rate or reliability estimate. A dark LED, a warning icon, or a missing PLC discovery entry identifies a symptom; it does not by itself prove that the camera electronics have failed. Confirming the outlet, breaker, adapter, cable, mount, transformer, and visible terminal connections is the reliable way to narrow the fault without creating an electrical safety risk.
