For the best privacy balance, review every HomePod separately in the Home app. Choose whether it responds to a voice wake phrase, whether touch activation and Siri feedback remain available, and whether that speaker may handle Personal Content such as requests based on information on a recognized user’s iPhone or iPad. Then review the home-wide Location Services control and delete Siri History from each speaker when needed.
The right configuration depends on where a speaker is placed and who can reach it. A bedroom HomePod can use stricter, touch-only controls, while a family-room speaker may justify voice activation and recognized-user features. Apple says Siri options vary by language, country, region and HomePod software version; its current setup guidance covers HomePod software 27 or later.
Start with a per-speaker privacy audit
HomePod privacy controls are split between settings for an individual speaker and one setting that applies to the entire home. Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad, select a HomePod, and open its Settings panel. Work through the Siri, Personal Content and history controls there. Afterward, open Home Settings to review Location Services for the home as a whole.
This distinction matters in a multi-room setup. A HomePod in a private office can have different behavior from one in a shared living room. Changing a speaker’s Siri or Personal Content option does not automatically change the other speakers.

How do I turn off Hey Siri on HomePod?
Open the Home app, select the HomePod, open Settings, and find the Siri listening option. Choose Siri, Hey Siri, or the option that turns voice activation off. Apple notes that the shorter “Siri” wake phrase is not available in every language or region, so some devices will offer only the longer phrase.
- Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Select the specific HomePod you want to change and open its Settings.
- In the Siri section, choose the available wake-phrase option or turn voice activation off.
- Test the result from the room. A voice wake phrase should no longer start Siri when it is disabled.
Turning off the voice wake phrase does not necessarily make Siri unreachable. If Touch and Hold for Siri remains enabled, anyone who can reach the top of the speaker can press and hold it to start a request. For a genuinely touch-only configuration, leave touch activation available intentionally; for no local Siri activation, disable both voice activation and the touch control.
Review touch activation, the light and the sound
In the same HomePod Settings panel, review the controls for Touch and Hold for Siri, the light that indicates Siri activation, and the activation sound. These controls determine how a person starts Siri and how the speaker signals that it has recognized a request.

Turn it off when people should not be able to start Siri from the speaker itself.
- Siri light: Leave the indicator enabled if you want a visible confirmation that Siri has recognized its activation. Disabling visual feedback can make activation less obvious.
- Activation sound: Leave the sound enabled when audible confirmation is useful, or disable it when a quieter interaction is preferable.
The light on top indicates that Siri has recognized its wake phrase. It is a status signal, not evidence that the speaker is continuously sending every conversation to Apple.
How do I stop HomePod from accessing my messages and other personal data?
Use the Personal Content control for each speaker. Personal Content allows requests that use information from supported apps on a recognized user’s iPhone or iPad. Depending on the request, HomePod may require authentication or send a notification to that iPhone.

- Open the Home app and select the HomePod.
- Open the speaker’s Settings and locate Personal Content.
- Turn Personal Content off for a speaker that should not handle personal requests, such as one in a guest room or an area visitors can access.
- Leave it on only for speakers where the household wants recognized users to use supported personal features.
Disabling Personal Content is the practical way to prevent that HomePod from handling supported personal requests, including requests involving messages, calendars or other personal information. It does not disable ordinary Siri functions such as general questions, timers or controlling compatible home accessories. The exact set of supported apps and requests can vary, and some actions can still require authentication.
Because the setting is per speaker, you can permit personal requests in a private bedroom while blocking them in a hallway or living room. Recheck the choice whenever a HomePod is moved to a new room or the household’s access pattern changes.
Set up voice recognition for a shared home
Voice recognition lets HomePod distinguish household members and provide personalized media and other supported responses. Each person sets up recognition with their own Apple account and device. Apple’s support guidance says a shared home can have up to six recognized users.
When recognition is useful
- Different members can receive personalized media recommendations and supported account-based responses.
- Personal Content can be enabled selectively on the speakers where recognized users are trusted to make personal requests.
- Authentication and iPhone notifications provide an extra check for some sensitive actions.
What guests can do
Guests can still use general Siri functions. If a guest asks HomePod to play music, playback can use the primary user’s account rather than a guest-specific profile. That behavior is different from recognizing the guest as one of the household’s configured users.
Recognition limits and maintenance
Six is a product limit described by Apple, not a guarantee that every voice or language will be recognized perfectly. If a member changes their Apple account, replaces their iPhone or stops receiving personalized results, review that person’s recognition setup on their own device and confirm that the HomePod is still in the intended home.

Can I turn off location services on HomePod?
Yes. In the Home app, open Home Settings and review Location Services. This is a home-wide control: changing it affects all HomePods in that home rather than only the speaker you were last viewing.

Turning Location Services off limits that location-based behavior, so local answers may become less useful or unavailable. If one room needs stricter location controls but another needs local information, the home-wide scope means you cannot create separate Location Services policies for individual speakers within that home.
How do I delete Siri history on HomePod?
Siri History is managed from an individual HomePod’s settings. Open the Home app, select the speaker, open Settings, choose Siri History, and use the delete command shown there. Repeat the process for other HomePods if you want to remove history associated with more than one speaker.
Deleting Siri History is separate from turning off voice activation and separate from disabling Personal Content. A speaker can have voice activation disabled while retaining history, or it can keep ordinary Siri available while you periodically delete the stored interactions associated with that HomePod.
Does HomePod listen to everything I say?
Apple describes HomePod’s behavior this way: “Nothing you say is sent to Apple servers until HomePod recognises ‘Hey Siri’ or ‘Siri’, or until you touch and hold the top of HomePod before a request.” Apple also says communications with its servers are encrypted and that anonymous identifiers are used to protect identity.

Those statements are Apple’s own privacy description, not an independent privacy audit. The practical controls are therefore important: disable the voice wake phrase when you do not want voice activation, disable Touch and Hold for Siri when physical activation should also be blocked, and use the Siri light and sound if you want clear activation feedback.

Troubleshooting common privacy-setting surprises
Siri still responds after “Hey Siri” is turned off
Check Touch and Hold for Siri. Apple says touch-and-hold can still activate Siri when voice activation is disabled if that control remains on. Turn off the touch control as well if the speaker should not accept local Siri activation.
A shorter “Siri” option is missing
The single-word option is not available in every language or region. Use the available “Hey Siri” option or turn voice activation off.
A personal request asks for authentication
Some Personal Content requests require authentication and may send a notification to the recognized user’s iPhone. Confirm that the intended person is recognized in the home and that Personal Content is enabled on that particular speaker.

Check Home Settings → Location Services. Because this control applies to the whole home, changing it for one reason affects every HomePod in that home.

A guest’s music uses the primary account
That is expected when the guest is not configured as a recognized household user. Guests can use general Siri functions, but music may play through the primary user’s account.
Before selling, giving away or moving a HomePod
Remove the HomePod accessory from the Home app before transfer. Apple recommends removing the accessory from the home, with reset available when the HomePod is nearby. Removing it prevents the outgoing speaker from remaining associated with the former home configuration.
After moving a speaker to another home, audit all of its settings again. Personal Content, recognition relationships, Location Services scope and the people who can physically reach the device may all be different in the new location.

Version, language and regional caveats
Apple’s HomePod guides warn that Siri features and settings can depend on HomePod software version, language, country and region. The current setup guidance referenced here covers HomePod software version 27 or later. iOS and iPadOS releases can also change menu placement or wording, so use the labels currently displayed in the Home app rather than relying on an older screenshot.
If an option described here is missing, first update the HomePod and the controlling iPhone or iPad, confirm the device’s language and region, and then reopen the individual speaker’s Settings or Home Settings. Availability differences are not necessarily a fault; Apple explicitly varies Siri capabilities by language and geography.
