The most useful home tech gadget is one that makes a recurring task easier: a robot vacuum for floors, a speaker or display for hands-free control, a camera or doorbell for monitoring, or a smart thermostat for climate management. Before buying, check that it works with your existing smart-home platform and fits your home, maintenance tolerance, and privacy expectations.
Start with a task, not a gadget
Choose the friction you want to remove first. A connected device can make a routine more convenient, but it also brings setup, compatibility, upkeep, and sometimes ongoing costs. A useful shortlist is easier to build by job:
- Cleaning: a robot vacuum or vacuum-mop combo can handle routine floor care.
- Hands-free control: a smart speaker or display can operate compatible devices and answer voice requests.
- Monitoring: a camera or video doorbell can help you check a room or entry point.
- Climate: a smart thermostat can provide connected control of heating and cooling, if it supports your HVAC system.
These are different jobs, not interchangeable upgrades. Start with the one you want to solve most often.

Check compatibility before choosing a platform-dependent device
Smart-home platforms connect devices, but compatibility and available features vary. Check the device’s supported platforms against the voice assistant, hub, or ecosystem you already use; some products may require a separate hub or bridge. For a starter setup, a smart speaker or display can serve as a voice-control point, while compatible bulbs and plugs add basic lighting and appliance control. Verify that each item works with the same platform and check whether the functions you want require a hub, an account, or an internet connection.
Robot vacuums: choose for your floors and layout
A robot vacuum is most useful when you want routine floor cleaning with less manual effort. The right configuration depends on your floors, room layout, navigation needs, and willingness to maintain the machine—not on a universal “best” model. A vacuum-mop combo may suit homes that want both functions, but it adds another cleaning configuration to manage.

Vacuum-only or vacuum-mop combo?
Vacuum-only units focus on collecting floor debris. Combo models add mopping, which may be useful for homes with hard floors and a regular need for light floor washing. Compare what each unit can clean on your actual surfaces and whether it can transition appropriately between rooms and floor types.
Navigation and dock automation
Consider how the robot will move through your home: room arrangement, thresholds, furniture, and areas that need to be avoided all affect fit. A dock that automates more of the routine can reduce hands-on work, but automation does not eliminate upkeep. Check what the dock handles and what still requires your attention.

Maintenance and ownership costs
Compare how often you must empty the bin, clean brushes or mop components, refill water, replace consumables, and clear tangles. Include any required accessories or subscriptions in the cost of ownership; current prices were not established here, so compare the full costs for the models you are considering. Smart speakers and displays: a control point for compatible devices
A speaker or display earns its place when you will actually use voice control, quick device commands, or a visual interface. It can make connected lights, plugs, and other compatible devices easier to operate, but its usefulness depends on your platform and the products paired with it. Check supported devices and features before treating a speaker as the center of a setup.

For a sense of adoption, Pew Research Center reported in 2026 that 35% of U.S. adults surveyed said they had an AI-enabled smart speaker. The survey was conducted February 17–23, 2026; this figure is specifically about speakers respondents identified as AI-enabled, not all smart speakers or smart-home ownership. Cameras and doorbells: make privacy part of the decision
A connected camera or doorbell may help you monitor a room or see activity at an entry. Before buying, check how the product handles video, account access, security updates, and any cloud storage or subscription requirements. Consider placement and who should be able to view the feed. Consumer Reports says its camera and doorbell evaluations consider data privacy and security; that is a reason to include those criteria in your comparison, not a claim about any particular model’s performance. Pew’s 2026 survey found that 18% of U.S. adults surveyed reported having an AI-enabled smart doorbell. Respondents were asked about doorbells and then whether the devices had AI features, so the number does not represent ownership of all doorbells. The survey ran February 17–23, 2026, and its results are described in Pew’s AI use survey.
Smart thermostats: verify HVAC fit first
A smart thermostat can make temperature control more convenient, but it must be compatible with your heating and cooling equipment and wiring. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility requirements for your specific HVAC system before purchase, and consider whether you want remote control, scheduling, or support for room sensors. The Home Depot’s smart thermostat buying guide covers the category. Pew reported that 11% of U.S. adults surveyed had an AI-enabled smart thermostat in its February 17–23, 2026 survey; that is an AI-feature-specific figure, not total thermostat ownership. How to narrow your shortlist
- Name the recurring job. Decide whether you want help with floor cleaning, hands-free control, monitoring, or temperature management.
- Check home fit. For a vacuum, consider floor surfaces and layout; for a thermostat, check HVAC compatibility; for cameras and speakers, consider placement and connectivity.
- Confirm ecosystem support. Verify the supported platform, required hub or bridge, and whether the features you want work in your current setup.
- Account for ongoing effort and cost. Check cleaning and replacement needs, storage or subscription requirements, and any extra hardware before comparing purchase prices.
- Review privacy and security. For connected monitoring devices in particular, understand account controls, data handling, and update support before enabling access.
Pew’s 2026 figures offer a limited adoption snapshot rather than a ranking of the best gadgets: 13% of surveyed U.S. adults reported an AI-enabled robot vacuum, 35% an AI-enabled smart speaker, 18% an AI-enabled smart doorbell, and 11% an AI-enabled smart thermostat. Respondents were asked whether thermostats, doorbells, and vacuums had AI features, so these percentages should not be read as total ownership of those device categories.
