The best home security system without professional monitoring depends on what you mean by “without monitoring.” If you want to avoid a 24/7 service but still receive phone alerts, Abode and Arlo document self-monitoring options with app notifications. If you want to avoid every recurring fee, the trade-offs are sharper: Ring says its no-subscription mode does not send digital alerts, while Abode’s free tier sends basic push notifications but does not store clips. SimpliSafe’s camera-recording option costs $9.99 per month, and Eufy’s cited no-fee offer is for local-storage cameras in the UK—not proof that every bundle replaces a complete alarm system.
This is a feature-based comparison of manufacturer documentation, not a hands-on test or an independently measured ranking. Most plan details below refer to the U.S.; Eufy’s cited local-storage information is from its UK product pages. Plan terms and prices can change.
What “without monitoring” means
Two different buying questions often get described with the same phrase:
- Without professional monitoring: You receive alerts and decide what to do. There is no external monitoring service handling the event for you.
- Without a subscription: You pay no recurring fee, but app access, alerts, video storage, or other features may be limited.
A phone alert is not the same as emergency dispatch. With self-monitoring, the homeowner is responsible for seeing an alert and responding. The options below differ in whether alerts, remote controls, and recordings continue when you do not pay for a plan.

How the five options compare
| System | What the no-professional-monitoring or no-plan option provides | Video and recurring-fee distinction | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abode | Free plan supports self-monitoring, system control, and generic push notifications. | Live video is included; stored clips are not included in the free plan. | Free plan excludes the event timeline, rich notifications, automations, professional monitoring, and 4G cellular backup. |
| Arlo Home Security System | Arlo Secure app alerts the user to security events without a Professional Monitoring plan. | The cited support comparison does not establish no-plan video-recording terms. | 24/7 safety agents are not notified on self-monitoring; cellular and battery backup are sold separately, and the cited backup workflow is described for professional monitoring. |
| Ring Alarm | Without a subscription, users can arm and disarm at the keypad, and the siren sounds. | Remote app controls and Alarm Professional Monitoring require an eligible plan. | No digital notifications are sent without a subscription. |
| SimpliSafe | A paid self-monitoring option is listed; the cited plan page does not fully establish the complete no-plan feature set. | Self-Monitoring with Camera Recordings costs $9.99/month and includes 30 days of recordings for up to 10 cameras, with downloads. | It is not a no-subscription option. Confirm basic functions directly with SimpliSafe before relying on an unplanned setup. |
| Eufy Security | Compatible products can store camera footage locally, according to Eufy’s UK pages. | Eufy promotes local storage without a monthly storage fee for compatible products. | The cited material does not establish that every bundle provides a complete alarm hub-and-sensor system. |
1. Abode: a strong fit for free app-based self-monitoring
Abode’s free plan is the clearest fit here if you want a real alarm system with basic phone alerts and remote control but do not want a recurring plan. It includes self-monitoring, system control, live video, integrations, and generic push notifications. That makes it more useful for app-based no-fee monitoring than Ring’s documented no-subscription mode.
What the free plan leaves out
Abode’s free tier does not include an event timeline, stored clips, rich push notifications, or automations. Its plan comparison puts timeline, clips, CUE automations, and geofencing in Standard and Pro. Professional monitoring and 4G cellular backup are Pro features, so do not assume the free plan retains communication during an internet or power disruption.

2. Arlo Home Security System: self-monitoring with app alerts
Arlo’s documented self-monitoring option sends security-event alerts through the Arlo Secure app without a Professional Monitoring plan. The system includes a keypad sensor hub, modes, an integrated siren, a motion sensor, and a microphone that listens for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, according to Arlo’s guide. Arlo says users can choose self-monitoring or subscribe after a Professional Monitoring trial.

Alerts are not agent response
With self-monitoring, 24/7 live safety agents are not notified. You must act on the alert yourself. Arlo lists cellular and battery backup as separately sold; its support comparison describes continued operation and cellular alerts during power and internet outages in the professional-monitoring case. Do not treat that as confirmation that a self-monitored account gets the same outage or emergency-response workflow.
3. Ring Alarm: a physical alarm without a plan, but not phone alerts
Ring’s Alarm kit includes a base station, keypad, contact sensor, and motion sensor; the 8-piece second-generation kit is one documented configuration. Ring says users without a subscription can arm and disarm at the keypad and hear the siren if the alarm is triggered. They do not receive digital notifications.
Rank #4

That makes Ring a possible fit if you are comfortable relying on the keypad and siren, or if you are willing to pay for the plan features you need. Ring describes remote app arming and disarming and Alarm Professional Monitoring as subscription features requiring an eligible plan. The Ring plan page displayed Solo at $4.99/month or $49.99/year, Multi at $9.99/month or $99.99/year, Pro at $19.99/month or $199.99/year, and Virtual Security Guard at $99/month when checked in 2026. These are listed plan prices, not a claim that every plan is solely a monitoring fee; confirm current names, eligibility, and pricing before subscribing.

4. SimpliSafe: self-monitoring with recordings is a paid option
SimpliSafe belongs on a list for people who mean “without professional monitoring,” not necessarily “without a monthly fee.” Its U.S. support page, updated June 29, 2026, lists Self-Monitoring with Camera Recordings at $9.99/month. The plan includes 30 days of recordings for up to 10 cameras and downloads.

The same page lists Standard at $22.99/month and Pro Plus at $79.99/month. Those prices and features are plan terms, not evidence that a no-plan system retains the same capabilities. The cited article does not fully enumerate what SimpliSafe equipment can do with no plan, so check the current support and plan details for the exact kit before buying it on that assumption.
5. Eufy Security: local-storage cameras, not automatically a full alarm replacement
Eufy’s official UK Security and HomeBase 3 pages promote local storage without a monthly storage fee for compatible products. That may suit someone whose main need is camera surveillance and locally saved footage rather than a professionally monitored alarm.
Check the exact camera and HomeBase models for compatibility and recording features. The cited pages do not establish that every Eufy bundle includes a complete alarm hub-and-sensor setup, so treat this as a camera/local-storage route unless the specific kit’s alarm functions are confirmed. The cited Eufy information is UK product material, and should not be read as a guarantee of availability or identical terms in other countries.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose Abode if free app control and basic phone alerts matter more than stored clips, rich notifications, or automations.
- Choose Arlo if app alerts are central to your self-monitoring and you understand that the user—not an agent—must respond.
- Choose Ring if keypad operation and a siren are sufficient without a plan, or if you are prepared to subscribe for remote app access and alerts.
- Consider SimpliSafe if you want camera recordings while self-monitoring and accept a $9.99/month plan as listed in the June 2026 U.S. support page.
- Consider Eufy if local camera storage without a monthly storage fee is the priority; verify that the exact bundle covers any alarm functions you need.
Before buying, check the kit contents and compatibility, the plan state required for phone alerts and remote arm/disarm, whether footage is live-only or recorded, and whether any backup equipment is included or sold separately. Confirm current prices and terms in your country, since bundles, eligibility, and subscriptions can change.
