If you mostly print occasional forms and documents in black and white, start with a monochrome laser printer. It avoids the inkjet printhead drying and clogging that can happen during long idle periods. If you need color or photos, look instead at an inkjet or ink-tank all-in-one, and factor in occasional maintenance and ink costs. The right choice depends on what you print, how often the device sits unused, and whether you need scanning or multi-page copying.

The five models below fill different roles, not a universal ranking. Product details and availability can vary by country, so check the version sold in your region.

Five home printers to consider for occasional use

It is a text-focused option if you do not need color. Check the regional version and its current features before buying. See RTINGS’ home-printer guide.

Canon imageCLASS LBP6030w: simpler black-and-white printing

RTINGS lists this monochrome laser as an alternative for buyers who want black-and-white printing and do not need scanning or color. The guide flags document print quality as a drawback, so compare its output with your needs rather than assuming every laser model produces the same results. See RTINGS’ home-printer guide.

Brother MFC-J4355DW: mid-range color all-in-one

In a July 29, 2026 update, RTINGS moved the Brother MFC-J4355DW into its mid-range home-printer pick, replacing the Epson EcoTank ET-2980 because the Brother’s pricing aligned better with that category. RTINGS describes the ET-2980 as a photo-quality alternative. This makes the Brother a candidate to investigate if you need color and multifunction features, while the Epson may suit buyers who prioritize photo output. Compare the exact regional configurations. See RTINGS’ home-printer guide.

Canon MegaTank Pixma G3290: photo-oriented all-in-one

Tom’s Guide names the Canon MegaTank Pixma G3290 its best all-in-one for photos. It prints, copies, and scans, but has no document feeder, so it is less convenient for scanning or copying a stack of pages. Tom’s Guide estimates its color running cost at about 0.9 cents per page, compared with its reported category average of 1.9 cents; those are the publication’s estimates, not guaranteed costs for every buyer. See Tom’s Guide’s all-in-one printer guide.

Brother INKvestment MFC-T780DW: value-oriented all-in-one with an ADF

Tom’s Guide describes this model as a value-oriented all-in-one. In its tests, it reported 12.4 pages per minute for standard text and 6.7 pages per minute for duplex text, with estimated costs of 0.3 cents per black page and 0.94 cents per color page. It has a 20-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF), but duplex copying and scanning through that feeder are not supported. Treat the speed and cost figures as Tom’s Guide test results, not promised outcomes in every home. See Tom’s Guide’s all-in-one printer guide.

Choose the printer technology that fits your output

Mostly occasional text: consider monochrome laser

Laser printers are generally a practical choice for text-first workflows and avoid inkjet nozzle drying during idle periods. A basic monochrome model may be enough if you only need printed documents and do not need a scanner. Laser models can have paper and media limitations, so check supported paper types if you plan to print anything beyond ordinary documents. Read RTINGS’ inkjet-versus-laser explainer.

Color graphics and photos: consider inkjet or ink tank

Inkjet printers are more versatile for color and photos, though photo quality and supported media differ by model. Ink-tank printers can offer low per-page ink costs, but a lower running cost does not automatically make one the cheapest choice for a low-volume household: compare the device price with expected ink or toner spending over the time you expect to keep it.

Account for idle-time maintenance

Inkjet nozzles can dry or clog if a printer sits unused. Follow the care instructions for the exact model you buy. For its G1030 series, Canon recommends using the printer at least once a month and turning it off with the ON button so the printhead caps properly. That guidance is specific to the G1030 series, not a universal schedule for every inkjet. Read Canon’s G1030-series manual.

If you print only a few documents a year and do not need color, a laser may be a better fit for long gaps between jobs. If color or photos matter, decide whether you are willing to follow the model’s maintenance guidance when it is idle.

Compare total cost, not just the purchase price

Estimate your likely print volume, then compare the printer’s upfront price with the cost and yield of replacement ink or toner. A model with a higher purchase price can still make sense if you print enough to benefit from lower consumable costs, but low-volume users may not print enough to recover the difference.

HP says its ink-tank printers can offer up to 60% lower cost per page and become more economical at approximately 1,500 pages. These are HP’s broad estimates in its 2026 buyer guidance, not independently verified guarantees or a forecast for every model. Compare them with model-specific consumable costs and your own expected volume. Read HP’s ink-tank printer buying guide.

Check scanning, copying, and paper workflow

An all-in-one combines printing with scanning and copying. If you regularly handle multi-page paperwork, an ADF can feed a stack of originals without placing each page on the glass. An ADF does not necessarily scan or copy both sides automatically: check duplex support for the feeder itself. Also consider whether the device’s paper capacity and supported media suit the jobs you actually print.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose monochrome laser first if nearly all your jobs are occasional black-and-white documents.
  • Look at inkjet or ink tank models if you need color graphics or photos, and check their idle-care instructions.
  • Choose an all-in-one if you will use its scanner or copier; look for an ADF if you often process multiple pages.
  • Verify duplex scanning separately when you need to scan both sides of multi-page originals.
  • Compare purchase cost and expected consumables against your likely print volume, rather than choosing by device price alone.
  • Check local model names, specifications, supported paper, and availability before purchase.
