The best home office keyboard depends on how you type and what your desk needs: the Logitech MX Keys S is a strong all-rounder for laptop-style typing, while mechanical and split-layout models suit different preferences. These five options cover the main trade-offs—key feel, number pad, desk space, lighting and device switching—without assuming one keyboard fits everyone.

1. Logitech MX Keys S: best general-purpose low-profile pick
The MX Keys S is a full-size wireless scissor-key keyboard with backlighting. Its low-profile keys are a natural fit for people accustomed to laptop keyboards. It connects over Bluetooth or Logitech’s Logi Bolt USB receiver and can switch among up to three paired devices, according to Logitech’s product specifications.

2. Keychron K5 Max: best low-profile mechanical alternative
The K5 Max is a full-size, low-profile mechanical option. It offers a different feel and more key travel than a scissor-key board such as the MX Keys S; the selected switch also affects how it feels to type. Mechanical does not automatically mean quieter or more comfortable, so consider the switch and your own preference rather than assuming a particular benefit. 3. Logitech ERGO K860: best for people seeking a split layout
The ERGO K860 has a full-size, curved split keyframe, integrated wrist rest and number pad. Its tilt legs adjust to 0°, -4° or -7°, according to Logitech’s product page. Its broad footprint and distinct hand position make it a specific form-factor choice, not a default upgrade for every desk.

Logitech says its design was developed and tested against ergonomist criteria. The company also reports that a majority of participants found they could type effectively after two days; this statement refers to Logitech’s proprietary research involving 52 US office professionals, fielded in October 2019. It is a manufacturer-reported finding, not evidence that the keyboard treats or prevents pain.

Keychron identifies this wireless mechanical model as having 104 keys. It is worth investigating if you want a conventional full-size mechanical layout rather than a low-profile board. The available product information does not establish a detailed independent comparative review, a current regional price or the exact switch and layout variant. Verify the specific configuration, operating-system layout and feature list on the listing for the model you intend to buy. Keychron’s low-profile keyboard guide notes that customization support varies across its product series, so do not assume every model supports every feature.

5. Logitech Signature Slim K950: slim option without backlighting
RTINGS describes the K950 as similar to the MX Keys S in features, but without backlighting and with lower-quality materials. It may suit a buyer who wants a slim keyboard and does not need illuminated keys. How to choose the right layout and key feel
Decide whether a number pad earns its desk space
A full-size keyboard includes a number pad, which can be useful for frequent spreadsheet or numeric entry. It also takes up more desk width. If you rarely use the pad, a more compact layout can leave more room and keep your mouse closer. The five models above are full-size choices, so consider whether that footprint suits your workspace.

Choose scissor or mechanical keys by feel
The MX Keys S and K950 use slim, laptop-like designs; the K5 Max and K10 are mechanical alternatives. Scissor and mechanical keys provide meaningfully different typing experiences, but neither type is automatically better for everyone. If you are unsure, try the intended switch or key style in person when possible, and check the exact model variant before ordering.
Treat ergonomic shape as a form factor, not a health promise
A straight keyboard, a curved split keyboard and a compact keyboard are distinct designs. The K860 adds a wrist rest and adjustable tilt; its split format changes how your hands approach the keys and takes up more room than a slim conventional board. Microsoft’s healthy-computing guidance also describes split, curved and straight keyboard designs, and notes that compact keyboards without a 10-key pad can be easier to pack. Shape and accessories alone do not establish a medical benefit.

Check connectivity, lighting and compatibility
- Devices and connection: The MX Keys S supports Bluetooth and Logi Bolt and can pair with up to three devices, according to Logitech. Confirm whether you need Bluetooth, a receiver, or wired operation for your setup; do not assume another model has the same connections.
- Backlighting: The MX Keys S is backlit, while the K950 is not. Decide whether you type in a dim workspace before paying for lighting you may not use.
- Charging and battery estimates: The MX Keys S is rechargeable. Its advertised battery estimates depend on lighting settings and use, rather than representing a guaranteed runtime.
- Operating system and layout: Verify OS compatibility, key legends and regional layout for the exact listing. A family name alone may not identify the layout or included receiver.
- Mechanical customization: If switch choice or programmable behavior matters, check the exact model’s supported features. Capabilities can differ across product lines and variants.
