Size a home-lab rack UPS by totaling the equipment you need to keep running, checking that load against both the UPS’s watt and VA limits, and selecting a runtime that meets your outage plan. Then match the rack PDU’s input plug, electrical rating and outlets to the UPS and your equipment. A PDU distributes power; it does not increase the capacity of the UPS or wall circuit.
1. Decide what must stay powered
Make a list of equipment that should remain on battery during an outage: servers, storage, switches, routers, a modem, or other essential devices. Separate equipment that can shut down or lose power from equipment that must stay online. If your UPS has both battery-backed and surge-only outlets, the latter can serve devices that do not need battery runtime.
Include only the planned backed-up load in your UPS calculation. Vertiv recommends adding up the power consumption of the devices you intend to support; its home and office guidance describes 300–1500 VA as typical for that context, not as a maximum for home-lab installations. Vertiv’s home-office UPS guidance explains the estimate.

2. Estimate the load in watts
For each device, use its documentation or nameplate to estimate power consumption, then total the devices that will be on battery. A power supply’s maximum rating is not the same as the equipment’s normal draw: do not add maximum supply ratings as if they were measurements of actual consumption. An inline meter or UPS telemetry can refine the estimate; if you measure, note both ordinary use and representative peaks.

APC’s UPS buying guide distinguishes real power in watts from apparent power in volt-amperes (VA). The watt figure is the real power used by equipment; VA is voltage multiplied by current. Their relationship is the power factor. Check the specific UPS’s stated output power factor rather than assuming a VA rating tells you how many watts it can supply.
3. Check both UPS capacity limits and leave headroom
Your planned load must not exceed either the UPS’s maximum output watts or its maximum output VA. Compare the load with both ratings in the product specifications. The limits are related but not interchangeable: for example, Vertiv gives a 3000 VA / 2700 W UPS as an illustration of how usable watt capacity depends on output power factor. Vertiv’s UPS capacity white paper discusses power factor and sizing.

Leave capacity above the estimated load rather than planning to run at the UPS ceiling. APC recommends UPS output watt capacity 20–25% above the total attached load. Vertiv gives a 1.2 multiplier for total IT equipment wattage as a rule of thumb when assuming unity power factor. These are manufacturer guidelines, not universal code requirements; use them as planning margins and confirm the chosen model’s specifications. APC’s guide and Vertiv’s white paper describe those approaches.

This is an illustration of the arithmetic, not a particular product recommendation. You must still check the UPS’s VA limit and its stated power factor.

4. Choose runtime for the outage you need to handle
Capacity and runtime answer different questions. Capacity tells you whether the UPS can supply the load; runtime estimates how long it can do so. Decide whether you need a few minutes to ride through a brief interruption, time for an orderly shutdown, or longer operation. Then check the runtime chart or calculator for the exact UPS model at your planned load. Do not estimate runtime from the VA label alone.
Runtime generally falls as load rises and also depends on battery configuration and condition. Eaton notes that its runtime calculator’s published test results use new, fully charged batteries under typical office or data-center conditions, so an aging or partly charged battery may not match the estimate. Eaton’s UPS load and runtime calculator provides model-specific estimates and describes its test conditions. Vertiv’s guidance also covers runtime, load and UPS selection. If a short runtime is sufficient, size for that target rather than buying battery capacity without a defined need. If the lab must stay online longer, check whether the model supports additional battery modules and whether its runtime chart covers the intended configuration.

5. Match the PDU to the UPS and equipment
A rack PDU provides outlets for distributing power around the rack. It does not add UPS output capacity. Before selecting one, compare the UPS output connector and electrical rating with the PDU input plug and rating; then confirm the PDU receptacles match the equipment cords. Check outlet count, rack mounting, height and depth, UPS weight and mounting requirements, and the manufacturer’s ventilation and clearance guidance.

Connector configurations vary. Vertiv’s rack solution examples pair 1500 VA / 1350 W and 2200 VA / 1920 W UPS models with PDUs having specified input plugs and outlet configurations. These examples show why connector and rating checks matter; they are not universal recommendations for a home lab. Vertiv rack solution examples

6. Verify the wall supply and installation
Household circuit suitability depends on your region, the specific circuit and receptacle, the UPS input requirements, and applicable local electrical rules. There is no single breaker or circuit recommendation that can be applied safely to every home-lab installation. Check the UPS installation instructions and local requirements; consult a qualified electrician when needed. Do not use a PDU to work around a limit of the UPS or branch circuit. Vertiv’s home-office and network-closet guidance provides general context, but the correct installation depends on the specific equipment and site. Vertiv home-office and network-closet guidance

7. Compare UPS candidates on the details that affect your lab
Once you have a load estimate and runtime target, compare candidate models using their specifications and documentation. A useful checklist is:
- Output capacity: maximum watts and VA, plus the stated output power factor.
- Runtime: estimated time at your planned load, battery configuration, and battery replacement or expansion support.
- Power behavior: UPS topology and transfer behavior appropriate for your equipment, as described by the model’s manufacturer.
- Electrical compatibility: input plug, voltage and circuit requirements for your installation.
- Rack fit: form factor, depth, weight, mounting method, and ventilation clearances.
- Distribution and service: PDU outlet types and rating, monitoring options, warranty, and battery service.
These checks make the selection specific to your load and installation. The cited manufacturer guidance supports comparing capacity, runtime, connectors and rack fit; it does not establish one best model or a current price.
