For streaming, match the speed reaching your device to the service and video resolution: Netflix recommends at least 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K; YouTube recommends sustained speeds of about 2.5 Mbps, 5 Mbps, and 20 Mbps for those resolutions. Those are per-service playback recommendations, not a universal broadband-plan target. Browsing varies with what you load, while simultaneous streams and other active devices share your connection.
How much speed does one stream need?
Use the recommendation for the service and resolution you plan to watch. Netflix describes its figures as recommended speeds for a stable connection; YouTube describes its figures as approximate sustained speeds. Neither set should be treated as a guarantee of uninterrupted playback in every home.

For purchased Google TV content, Google lists a separate minimum of 2 Mbps for HD and 14 Mbps for 4K. It also requires a compatible device for 4K. These different service-specific figures are why no single Mbps number guarantees a particular quality across all streaming services. Netflix’s speed recommendations, YouTube’s system requirements, and Google TV’s playback guidance set out their respective requirements.

What about ordinary web browsing?
There is no single useful Mbps threshold for all browsing: a mostly text-based page, a page full of images, a download, and an interactive service place different demands on a connection. The sources above specify video playback recommendations, not a general browsing speed. In practical terms, the streaming figures are useful for planning video use, especially high-resolution or concurrent streams; they do not define how quickly every website will respond.

How to estimate what your household needs
Start with the streams likely to be playing at the same time, including their resolutions, then account for browsing and other activity on the shared connection. Each stream draws from available capacity. The published recommendations do not provide a universal multiplier for the number of people or devices in a home, so a precise household target cannot be calculated from them alone.
- List the services, resolutions, and number of videos likely to play concurrently.
- Note other active internet uses while those streams are running.
- Measure the speed at the device and location where playback happens, rather than relying only on the broadband plan’s advertised speed.
- Compare the measured result with the relevant service’s recommendation. If it is close to or below that figure, repeat the check under the conditions when buffering occurs.
A speed test at one device and time does not show what every room or evening will deliver. Wi-Fi signal strength and interference can make the speed at a television differ from the speed available near the router.

What to check when video buffers or drops in quality
Measure near the affected device
Netflix says you can check your connection with Fast.com on a phone, tablet, or computer, or use the Netflix app’s “Check your Network” function on a TV-connected device. Test close to the device and during the problem if possible, then compare the result with the recommendation for the service and resolution you are watching.

YouTube recommends keeping the streaming device within router range with minimal interference and minimizing other tabs or programs. You can also try moving the device closer to the router or reducing other network use. These steps may help, but they are not guaranteed fixes.

Try a wired connection if practical
If the device is near the router and supports Ethernet, a cable can help determine whether wireless conditions are contributing to the problem. YouTube says it may help to hardwire the connection instead of using Wi-Fi; that is a troubleshooting option, not a promise that wiring will resolve every playback issue. An Ethernet cable does not increase the speed supplied by your broadband plan.
Check whether the device and content support the quality
Speed is not the only limit on playback resolution. Google TV says playback may fall to SD if the title is unavailable in HD, the connection is too slow, or the display does not meet minimum requirements; viewers are also limited to the quality purchased and the highest quality supported by their device. YouTube notes that video quality can adapt to viewing conditions and that some formats may not be available on every device or browser.

When should you consider changing equipment or your plan?
First identify where the shortfall occurs. If the measured speed is adequate near the router but low at the TV, investigate Wi-Fi range or interference before assuming the broadband plan is the cause. If speeds are consistently below the relevant service recommendation even near the router, the connection or other network activity may be limiting playback. A router, cable, or subscription upgrade should follow that diagnosis rather than be treated as an automatic solution.
