Home Depot and Lowe’s both use a 90-day default for many purchases, but that is only the starting point. Appliances, electronics, paint, outdoor equipment, plants, custom goods and account-linked purchases have different deadlines. The most urgent rule is the 48-hour window for major appliances and other listed delivery or pickup categories.
Use the exact product category, the date that starts its clock, the item’s condition and your proof of purchase to determine whether a return is still available. A Home Depot or Lowe’s qualifying account or card can extend many eligible purchases to 365 days, while category exceptions still override that longer period.
Quick comparison: the deadline depends on the item
The table below shows the principal published windows. “Purchase date” is the normal trigger unless the row says delivery or pickup.

These windows are not interchangeable. A television bought with a qualifying account may still fall under the retailer’s electronics exception, and a damaged appliance can have a delivery-based deadline even when the general rule is measured from purchase.

Home Depot return policy
The 90-day rule
Home Depot states that most merchandise can be returned within 90 days with proof of purchase. The 90 days ordinarily run from the purchase date. The item’s category, condition and any exclusion must be checked before relying on that default.
Items limited to 30 days
Home Depot lists a 30-day period for furniture, tractors, framing and roofing compressors, consumer electronics including televisions and computers, paint sprayers and listed gas-powered items. The products must be unused and factory-sealed. Opening or using an item in one of these categories can therefore affect eligibility even when fewer than 30 days have passed.
Items limited to seven days
Dehumidifiers, gas pressure washers, window or portable air conditioners and gas generators have a seven-day return period. Home Depot specifies that these products must be unused and factory-sealed. Count seven days from the purchase date unless the transaction record or a category-specific instruction gives a different trigger.

Major appliances: a 48-hour deadline
For a major appliance, damage or a defect must be reported within 48 hours of delivery. Home Depot also applies a 48-hour return rule to unopened and unused major appliances. This is a delivery-based deadline rather than a general 90-day allowance, so waiting until the 90th day can eliminate the return option.
Inspect the appliance as soon as it arrives. Record visible damage, retain packaging and contact Home Depot immediately if the appliance is damaged or does not operate as expected. The policy’s 48-hour language is the controlling timing requirement for these situations.
Purchases tied to Home Depot accounts or cards
Purchases made on the Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, Pro Xtra Credit Card or Commercial Account can receive a 365-day return period. The longer period does not override a category with a shorter published window. For example, a qualifying account does not turn a seven-day gas generator window or a 48-hour major-appliance window into 365 days.
Plants
Most plants fall within 90 days. Perennials, trees, roses and shrubs have a one-year guarantee. When one of those qualifying plants is returned after the first 90 days, Home Depot handles the return as store credit rather than the ordinary return treatment. Keep the purchase proof and identify the plant type before assuming the one-year guarantee applies; “most plants” do not all receive the same period.

Home Depot exclusions
The published exclusions include:
- Gift cards and store credits
- Labor, delivery and installation services
- Product samples
- Tinted paint
- Custom or made-to-order products
- Certain generators
- Certain floral products
An exclusion can prevent a return even when the item is otherwise inside 90 days. Custom orders and tinted paint should be treated as final decisions at purchase because the ordinary merchandise window is not a safe assumption.
Receipt lookup
Home Depot describes more specific lookup options than Lowe’s in the supplied policy details. Card or check receipts may be located within 90 days. Receipts connected to qualifying Home Depot accounts may be located within 365 days. Bring the payment card, check information or account details used for the transaction when the paper receipt is missing.
Lowe’s return policy
The 90-day rule
Lowe’s says most new, unused merchandise can be refunded or exchanged with a receipt within 90 days of the original purchase date unless a return-policy exception applies. “New and unused” is important: an item that has been installed, operated or altered may not meet the stated condition even if it is within the time limit.
Categories with a 48-hour window
Lowe’s requires a return to be initiated within 48 hours of delivery or pickup for major appliances, air conditioners and evaporative coolers, paint sprayers, tile saws, construction heaters and parts, and listed utility vehicles or motorized equipment. The trigger is delivery or pickup, not necessarily the date the order was placed.
For a delivered appliance, inspect it immediately and start the return process as soon as damage or a defect is found. For a pickup order, use the pickup date as the starting point for the 48-hour calculation.
Categories with a 30-day window
Lowe’s lists 30 days for liquid paint, televisions and electronics, water heaters, most outdoor power equipment, special-order custom blinds or window treatments and HVAC systems. The original purchase date generally starts this window. CRAFTSMAN outdoor power equipment is listed separately under the 90-day rule, so do not automatically apply the 30-day outdoor-equipment period to that brand category.
Purchases with a 365-day period
A 365-day period is published for purchases made with a qualifying Lowe’s Commercial Account, Lowe’s Business Advantage, MyLowe’s Rewards Credit Card or Lowe’s Business Rewards account. This extension remains subject to category exceptions, including the 48-hour and 30-day groups. Use the account connected to the transaction when requesting a lookup or return.

Plants
Trees, shrubs and perennials can qualify for one year, but Lowe’s requires a receipt for a replacement or refund. All other plants fall under 30 days. The plant distinction is narrower than Home Depot’s: Lowe’s one-year group is trees, shrubs and perennials, while other plants do not receive that year-long period.

Lowe’s states that outlet sales are final except for returns specifically permitted by the policy. Do not assume that the normal 90-day rule applies to an outlet purchase; check the transaction and the applicable exception before buying.
Appliance returns: why 48 hours matters
Appliance questions are often phrased as “Can I return an appliance after 90 days?” For major appliances covered by either retailer’s 48-hour rule, the practical answer is generally no for a new damage, defect or ordinary return request after that deadline. Both policies make the appliance clock short and tied to delivery or pickup rather than giving every appliance the general 90-day period.
Home Depot appliance timing
- Report major-appliance damage or defects within 48 hours of delivery.
- Unopened and unused major appliances are also subject to a 48-hour return rule.
- A qualifying Home Depot card or account does not replace this shorter appliance deadline.
Lowe’s appliance timing
- Initiate the return within 48 hours of delivery or pickup.
- The rule covers major appliances and also the listed air-conditioner and evaporative-cooler categories.
- A qualifying Lowe’s account or card does not automatically extend a 48-hour category to 365 days.
A practical inspection routine
- Write down the delivery or pickup date and time.
- Inspect packaging, doors, panels, controls and visible finishes before discarding packing material.
- Photograph damage and keep the delivery paperwork.
- Test the appliance promptly where safe and practical.
- Contact the retailer and initiate the return as soon as a problem appears, stating whether the issue is damage, a defect or an unopened return.
This routine does not create extra rights, but it helps establish that the report was made inside the applicable 48-hour period.
Does a store card extend the return period?
Both retailers publish a 365-day benefit for specified account-linked purchases, but the benefit is conditional.

The extension is not a blanket promise for every item purchased with the card. Check whether the product is in a 48-hour, seven-day or 30-day category, whether it is excluded, and whether the account is the one tied to the transaction. Keep the statement or account record as additional evidence of the purchase.
Proof of purchase and receipt-free returns
Home Depot
Home Depot specifically describes receipt lookup for card or check purchases within 90 days and for qualifying Home Depot-account purchases within 365 days. Bring the card, check details or account information used at checkout. Lookup availability does not remove the requirement that the item meet the category, condition and timing rules.

Lowe’s
Lowe’s standard wording requires a receipt for a refund or exchange. The published details supplied here do not describe a matching, universal receipt-lookup period for every payment type. If the receipt is missing, gather the payment card, order information and account details and ask the store whether the transaction can be located before making a trip.
What to keep
- Paper or digital receipt
- Order confirmation and delivery or pickup record
- Payment card or account used for the purchase
- Packaging, serial-number labels and manuals for technical products
- Photos of shipping or product damage
Proof of purchase supports the transaction, but it cannot bypass an exclusion or revive an expired deadline.
Conditions that can decide the outcome
New, unused and factory-sealed
Lowe’s uses “new, unused” language for its general rule. Home Depot expressly requires unused and factory-sealed condition for several 30-day and seven-day categories. A sealed package is therefore especially important for Home Depot electronics, paint sprayers, gas-powered items, dehumidifiers, pressure washers, air conditioners and generators.
Custom, made-to-order and tinted products
Home Depot excludes custom or made-to-order products and tinted paint from its listed returns. Lowe’s assigns special-order custom blinds and window treatments a 30-day category rather than the general 90-day period. Treat a custom order as a separate category from ordinary shelf merchandise.
Services and non-merchandise items
Home Depot’s exclusions include labor, delivery and installation services, product samples, gift cards and store credits. A service charge or gift card should not be treated like a physical product that can be taken back under the 90-day merchandise rule.

The policy clock can begin on the purchase date, delivery date or pickup date. For ordinary merchandise, the published language generally uses the original purchase date. For the listed Lowe’s 48-hour categories, delivery or pickup starts the clock. Home Depot’s major-appliance damage and defect rule is tied to delivery.
- Find the order confirmation and write down purchase, delivery and pickup dates.
- Identify whether the item is in a delivery-based 48-hour category.
- Use the earliest applicable deadline when the records are unclear, then contact the retailer for confirmation.
- Keep tracking, delivery and pickup evidence until the return is completed.
Do not count from the date you first opened an online box unless the retailer’s category rule actually uses that date; the published windows above use purchase, delivery or pickup as specified.

Decision guide for common situations
A television bought 20 days ago
At Home Depot, televisions are in the listed 30-day consumer-electronics category and must be unused and factory-sealed. At Lowe’s, TVs and electronics are also listed under 30 days. Check condition and receipt requirements before starting the return.
A gas generator bought eight days ago
Home Depot lists gas generators in the seven-day group, with unused and factory-sealed condition. Eight days can therefore be outside that published window even though the general rule is 90 days. Check the exact generator model because certain generators are also listed among Home Depot exclusions.
A tree bought 10 months ago
Home Depot’s one-year guarantee covers trees, with returns after 90 days handled as store credit. Lowe’s lists trees under its one-year category but requires a receipt for replacement or refund. The retailer, proof of purchase and remedy differ even though both periods reach one year.

Liquid paint bought 20 days ago at Lowe’s
Liquid paint is in Lowe’s 30-day category. Confirm that the purchase is inside 30 days and retain the receipt. Do not substitute Home Depot’s tinted-paint exclusion for Lowe’s liquid-paint rule; each retailer’s category language controls its own transaction.
An unopened major appliance delivered 60 hours ago
Both retailers publish 48-hour appliance rules. At 60 hours, the ordinary 90-day assumption is unsafe. Contact the retailer immediately with delivery evidence and ask what remedy remains available; the published return window has already passed.

- Name the exact category. Decide whether the item is a major appliance, electronics, paint, outdoor power equipment, plant, custom product, service, outlet item or ordinary merchandise.
- Find the controlling deadline. Choose 48 hours, seven days, 30 days, 90 days or 365 days as applicable.

- Confirm the remedy. Ask whether the transaction is being processed as a refund, exchange, replacement or store credit; Home Depot’s post-90-day qualifying plant return is specifically store credit, while Lowe’s plant rule specifies replacement or refund with a receipt.
- Recheck the live policy. Retailer exceptions and effective dates can change, so read the current policy immediately before acting.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Counting 90 days for everything: category exceptions can reduce the period to 48 hours, seven days or 30 days.
- Using the order date for an appliance: the relevant event can be delivery or pickup.
- Assuming a card defeats an exception: the 365-day account benefit remains subject to shorter category windows.
- Opening a sealed item before deciding: Home Depot’s specified short-window categories require unused and factory-sealed condition.
- Confusing plant guarantees: Home Depot includes roses in its one-year group; Lowe’s one-year list is trees, shrubs and perennials, while other Lowe’s plants are 30 days.
- Arriving without proof: Lowe’s standard wording requires a receipt, and Home Depot’s lookup works best with the original card, check or account information.
- Ignoring outlet or custom status: Lowe’s outlet sales are final except permitted returns, and Home Depot excludes custom or made-to-order products.
What to verify before you leave the store or submit the request
Write the item description, model or SKU, purchase date, delivery or pickup date, payment method and deadline in one note. Photograph the receipt and serial label. If the item is an appliance, photograph the carton before opening it. If the item is a plant, record its type because the guarantee depends on whether it is a tree, shrub, perennial, rose or another plant. This documentation makes it easier for an associate to apply the correct exception instead of defaulting to a generic 90-day answer.
The safest interpretation is straightforward: begin with 90 days, then immediately test for a shorter or longer category rule. A return is most likely to succeed when the item is within that category’s deadline, in the stated condition and supported by a receipt or verifiable account transaction.
