Neither Home Depot nor Lowe’s is the better choice for every project. For a DIY job, compare the exact items and quantities you need, local stock, pickup or delivery timing, and whether you need to rent equipment or arrange installation. For a contractor, add the value of each retailer’s Pro account tools, quoting, delivery scheduling, and purchasing workflow. Official company pages describe overlapping services and some differences, but they do not establish a nationwide winner for price, product quality, installation quality, or customer service.

How to choose between Home Depot and Lowe’s

Start with the job, not the store brand. A retailer is a good fit when it can supply the right products in the required quantities, get them to you when and where you need them, and support any rental, installation, or account steps the project involves. Those details can vary by location, item, order, and service provider.

This is a U.S.-oriented comparison of the companies’ published offerings. It is not a price survey, inventory audit, store visit, or independent evaluation of service quality. The practical choice for a particular project comes from checking the live options for your ZIP code and comparing the actual project basket.

Choose by project needs

  • One-off DIY project: Compare the exact item, model, quantity, local availability, and pickup or delivery options. If the job needs a specialty tool only briefly, check rental availability as well as the cost and logistics of owning or renting one.
  • Several materials or delivery dates: Check whether the store can supply the full order and meet the schedule, including any split deliveries or direct-to-jobsite options.
  • Installation project: Compare a written scope, quote, schedule, installer, and warranty for the specific service in your area. A chain’s national service description does not tell you which local provider or offer is best.
  • Recurring contractor purchases: Compare account features against how your business quotes work, authorizes purchases, tracks job costs, manages crews, and receives materials.

What Lowe’s offers DIY customers and contractors

Lowe’s’ Pro page describes a set of services aimed at contractors and other trade customers: Pro Desk assistance, help with blueprint takeoffs, product and quote support, bulk savings, business credit cards, Lowe’s Rental, preferred delivery, and installation services. For a DIY customer, rental and installation may be the most relevant parts of that list; for a contractor, quote and account support may matter more.

MyLowe’s Pro Rewards and account tools

The MyLowe’s Pro Rewards page describes points and rewards, member deals, and business tools. Those tools include online quoting, volume savings, scan to pay, multi-delivery scheduling, purchase authorization, and spend-related features. The same page describes a free-delivery benefit subject to exclusions and an eligible paint benefit tied to a qualifying-spend threshold. Program terms apply and can change, so check the current rules and the exact purchase before assigning a dollar value to a benefit.

The page’s published conversion is 100 points for $1 in MyLowe’s Money. That figure was reported for the page accessed October 10, 2026; it is not a guarantee of current terms, reward eligibility, or the amount an individual customer will earn. Review point expiry and the live program rules before relying on the conversion.

Digital tools for small and midsize Pros

In a February 17, 2026 company release, Lowe’s said it was expanding Pro Extended Aisle access and digital quoting and purchasing tools for small-to-medium Pros. The release describes direct-to-jobsite delivery from participating suppliers, quote and order tracking, purchase history, spend reports by job or client, and “Buy It Again” reordering. These are Lowe’s-announced capabilities; the release does not independently measure how well they work or establish availability for every item, supplier, or location.

DEWALT 20V Max XR Drill Driver, Battery and Charger (DCD771C2)
  • Lightweight design fits into tight areas
  • High performance motor delivers 300 unit watts out (UWO) of power ability completing a wide range of applications
  • High speed transmission delivers two speeds (0-450 & 1,500 rpm) for a range of fastening and drilling applications
  • 1/2' single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength. Ergonomic handle delivers comfort and control

For a contractor, these features are worth evaluating against actual business processes. For example, a company that regularly quotes repeat jobs may value saved purchase history, while a crew that must control who can buy materials may care more about purchase authorization. The useful question is not how many features an account advertises, but whether the specific features work for the people, jobs, and deliveries you manage.

Pickup, delivery, and installation

Lowe’s’ corporate business overview describes online and app shopping, pickup, curbside pickup, home delivery, and parcel shipping. Its installation examples include windows, flooring, roofing, and kitchens. Those category descriptions are starting points: they do not establish that every service is offered in every market or that local quotes, installer availability, preparation work, or warranties are comparable.

What Home Depot offers DIY customers and contractors

Home Depot’s corporate materials describe project calculators and product-location help in its app, along with delivery, in-store pickup, and truck and tool rental. Its Pro Xtra article describes project planning, catalog browsing, inventory checks, configurable delivery preferences, team collaboration, rental equipment, and business workflow tools. These offerings can help a shopper plan a job or help a contractor coordinate purchasing, but the published descriptions do not rank them against Lowe’s on ease, speed, or results.

Rental and home services

The company’s Rental Center description covers tools and equipment used for construction, maintenance, landscaping, and renovation. Its Home Services overview includes flooring, windows, and kitchen remodels. If rental or installation will affect your choice, check the item or service in your area rather than assuming a category listing means the required equipment, provider, or appointment is available.

  • Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
  • Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
  • Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
  • Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure

For tool planning, a cordless drill/driver is one example of equipment a DIYer might consider owning or renting. The published material here does not establish a recommended model, local rental price, or whether renting is cheaper than buying. Compare the rental period and related logistics with how often you expect to use the tool.

Express Delivery and proximity claims

In an August 18, 2026 announcement, Home Depot said its Express Delivery had rolled out across U.S. markets, with thousands of product SKUs and delivery in three hours or less for a small flat fee and no subscription. The same company announcement also describes same-day and other delivery services. These are dated company claims, not a promise that every item can reach every address within that window. Confirm ZIP-code coverage, item eligibility, available delivery slots, fees, and conditions in the live order flow.

Home Depot’s corporate overview also says that 90% of the U.S. population lives within 10 miles of its stores. The company does not state a publication year for that figure on the page described here. It is a company-published reach statistic, not an independent measurement of travel time and not evidence that a Home Depot is closer or more convenient for every reader.

Compare a project basket, not general price claims

The published company pages do not establish which chain is cheaper for a particular project. A meaningful comparison requires the same items and quantities, matched as closely as possible by brand and model, plus the costs and terms that affect delivery or service. A shelf price alone may not reflect a bulk offer, delivery fee, rental expense, installation quote, or reward with restrictions.

  1. Write down the job list. Record product names, model numbers where important, dimensions, quantities, and acceptable substitutions. Separate must-have items from items where an alternative will work.
  2. Check local stock and orderable quantities. Use each retailer’s current online or app shopping tools for your location. Confirm that the exact item and quantity can be reserved or ordered; do not treat a broad category listing as proof of local stock.
  3. Compare the full fulfillment plan. Check pickup, curbside pickup where offered, parcel shipment, home delivery, and any direct-to-jobsite option relevant to the order. Compare the actual fee, time window, cutoff, and access requirements.
  4. Add project services and rental needs. If you need equipment, compare available rental inventory and the terms for the period you need it. If you need installation, request comparable written scopes and quotes rather than comparing category names.
  5. Apply account benefits only after checking eligibility. For a Pro account or rewards program, confirm qualifying purchases, exclusions, spend thresholds, reward timing or expiry, and any delivery conditions that apply to this order.
  6. Choose based on the job’s constraints. A slightly different item, a delivery window that misses the crew, or a service quote that excludes required preparation can matter more than a nominal discount. Select the offer that meets the project’s real requirements.

Which store is a better fit for DIY projects?

For a small or one-time job, convenience often comes down to the exact basket: whether all required products are available, how quickly you can collect them, and whether you need a rental or an installation appointment. Home Depot’s published app features include calculators and product location, while Lowe’s lists Pro Desk help and installation categories. Those descriptions can suggest where to look first, but they do not show which store has the better product selection or help for your particular job.

For a larger renovation, treat installation as a separate buying decision. Ask each provider for the same work scope, including materials, removal, preparation, disposal, permits if applicable, timing, payment milestones, and warranty terms. Compare who performs the work and who is responsible if the underlying conditions change. The chains describe installation services, but the available company materials do not establish a national quality winner.

If you need a tool briefly, compare renting with purchasing using your own expected usage. Include rental duration, transport, deposits or other rental terms, and the chance the job will run longer than expected. The retailer pages establish that tool rental is part of the offering, not that a specific tool is available or that renting is automatically the economical choice.

Which store is a better fit for contractors?

Contractors should assess the entire purchasing workflow rather than a headline benefit. Lowe’s publicly lists Pro Desk support, quoting, bulk savings, account and credit options, and MyLowe’s Pro Rewards features such as multi-delivery scheduling and purchase authorization. Home Depot describes Pro Xtra planning, inventory visibility, delivery preferences, team collaboration, rental equipment, and business workflow tools. Each set could be useful, but the better fit depends on the contractor’s projects, crews, suppliers, and purchasing controls.

Match features to your workflow

  • Estimating: Check whether the retailer’s quote process handles your material list and any blueprint takeoff support you need.
  • Job costing: Look for purchase history or spend reports that can be organized by job or client, and verify what information is available to download or share.
  • Crew purchasing: If multiple people buy materials, review purchase authorization and team-collaboration options, including who can approve or view orders.
  • Staggered work: Test how multi-delivery scheduling or configurable delivery preferences handle the dates and locations your jobs require.
  • Repeat orders: Consider whether saved history or reordering tools reduce friction for recurring materials, while still checking current price, quantity, and availability.

Lowe’s’ 2026 release describes supplier-direct jobsite delivery and expanded digital tools for small-to-medium Pros, but it does not demonstrate service levels across all participating suppliers or markets. Home Depot’s materials describe planning and inventory tools, but do not supply a comparative measure of fulfillment accuracy or savings. Ask about the actual terms for your account and the products you buy regularly.

How to make the final decision

Use a short trial comparison before moving a recurring project or business relationship. For a household project, compare the current basket and service quote. For a contractor, test a representative order and the process for getting it quoted, approved, tracked, delivered, and allocated to a job. Keep a note of costs and problems that affect the work, not just advertised features.

  • Favor the retailer with the stronger local match when exact stock, quantity, and timing are the deciding factors.
  • Favor a Pro workflow that fits the crew when approvals, quote tracking, spend visibility, or multiple job deliveries save meaningful administrative effort.
  • Favor the clearer service offer when installation or rental terms are central: compare written scope, schedule, responsibility, and total cost.
  • Recheck before each order when relying on rewards, delivery claims, or stock, because program terms and local availability can change.

On the available published evidence, neither chain wins universally. Home Depot highlights app-based project guidance, rental, Pro planning, and a 2026 Express Delivery announcement; Lowe’s highlights Pro Desk support, rewards and account tools, and a broad set of pickup, delivery, and installation descriptions. The decision should follow the local order and the way the project will be managed.
