Short answer: Home Depot is the stronger choice for investors who prioritize operating scale, professional-customer reach and absolute cash generation. Lowe’s is more compelling for investors who place extra weight on a longer record of annual dividend increases. Neither is an automatic buy: your decision should also reflect each stock’s current valuation, balance-sheet risk and your tolerance for housing-cycle volatility.
Fiscal-2025 results show why the stocks appeal to different investors. Home Depot produced $164.7 billion in sales, $16.3 billion of operating cash flow and a 13.1% adjusted operating margin. Lowe’s generated $86.3 billion in sales, $7.7 billion of free cash flow and a 12.1% adjusted operating margin. Those cash-flow figures are different company-defined measures, so they are not directly interchangeable.
Home Depot and Lowe’s at a glance
Both companies sell products used to build, maintain and renovate homes, but they are not identical investments. Home Depot has the larger store base, sales platform and professional-customer business. Lowe’s is smaller and has emphasized its Total Home strategy, productivity improvements and deeper penetration of professional customers.
| Measure | Home Depot | Lowe’s |
|---|---|---|
| Fiscal-2025 sales | $164.7 billion | $86.3 billion |
| Fiscal-2025 earnings measure | $14.2 billion net earnings; $14.23 diluted EPS | $12.28 adjusted diluted EPS |
| Fiscal-2025 profitability | 13.1% adjusted operating margin | 12.1% adjusted operating margin |
| Cash-flow figure cited by the company | $16.3 billion operating cash flow | $7.7 billion free cash flow |
| Fiscal-2025 dividends | $9.2 billion paid | $2.6 billion returned through dividends |
| Store scale | More than 2,300 stores | Smaller store base; the cited materials do not state a comparable total |
| Dividend record | Large and growing cash distributions | Longer annual-increase history in the cited September 2026 review |
The table is a starting point, not a ranking. Home Depot’s operating-cash-flow total cannot be treated as the same measure as Lowe’s free-cash-flow total without reconstructing both companies’ definitions from their filings.

How the two retailers make money
Home-improvement retail is tied to repair, maintenance, remodeling and larger construction projects. Customers include homeowners doing projects themselves, landlords, tradespeople and professional contractors. That mix creates both recurring demand for basic repairs and more cyclical demand for discretionary renovations. A comparison should therefore examine not just total sales, but which customers are driving sales and how profitable those transactions are.
Professional customers can purchase in larger quantities and return repeatedly as projects progress. Home Depot has identified professional-customer reach as a strategic priority and is integrating GMS, an acquisition that required approximately $5.5 billion of aggregate cash consideration. Lowe’s Total Home strategy similarly seeks greater Pro penetration and a broader relationship with customers. The strategic question is not which retailer mentions professionals, but which one can gain share while maintaining margins and service levels.
Why Home Depot has the scale advantage
A larger revenue and store platform
Home Depot’s $164.7 billion of fiscal-2025 sales were about twice Lowe’s $86.3 billion. Home Depot also operates more than 2,300 stores. Greater scale can spread technology, distribution, advertising and corporate costs across a larger revenue base. It can also give the company more leverage when negotiating with suppliers and serving large professional customers.

A large retailer can still experience weak comparable sales, margin pressure or costly acquisitions. Home Depot’s fiscal-2025 inventory turnover fell to 4.4 times from 4.7 times in fiscal 2024, a sign that inventory productivity needs monitoring even though the company remains much larger. Slower turnover can tie up working capital and increase markdown or shrink risk if demand changes.
Professional customers are strategically important
Contractors and other professional customers typically buy larger quantities and may purchase repeatedly across projects. Home Depot has made professional-customer reach and the integration of its GMS acquisition central to its strategy. The acquisition required approximately $5.5 billion of aggregate cash consideration, so investors should judge whether the added capabilities produce durable sales, margin and cash-flow benefits rather than assuming the deal will automatically create value.
Useful evidence will include Pro sales growth, order frequency, fulfillment times, gross margin and the incremental operating costs associated with integration. If professional sales rise but margins fall or working capital expands sharply, the strategic gain may be less valuable than the headline revenue suggests.
Profitability: Home Depot leads, but definitions matter
Home Depot reported a fiscal-2025 adjusted operating margin of 13.1%, compared with Lowe’s 12.1%. On the figures cited, Home Depot had the higher adjusted margin. However, adjusted operating income is a non-GAAP measure, and the companies may exclude different items. A 100-basis-point difference should therefore be treated as directional evidence, not a perfectly standardized industry score.

Home Depot’s margin also declined from 13.8% in fiscal 2024 to 13.1% in fiscal 2025. That decline matters because a company can grow sales while producing less operating profit per dollar of revenue. Investors should determine whether the decline reflects temporary costs, mix, promotions, wage pressure or a more persistent change in pricing power.
Lowe’s fiscal-2025 comparable sales were positive at 0.2%, but the small increase indicates that demand was still subdued rather than accelerating sharply. A future improvement in comparable sales would be more encouraging if it came with stable or rising adjusted operating margin. Conversely, sales growth funded by heavy promotions may not create durable earnings growth.
What to monitor in future reports
- Comparable-store sales, separated between do-it-yourself shoppers and professional customers.
- Gross margin and adjusted operating margin, including the exact exclusions used in each company’s reconciliation.
- Inventory turnover, shrink and markdown activity.
- Sales productivity from stores, distribution centers and digital channels.
- Whether acquisition-related costs or restructuring charges are recurring.
- Operating expenses as a percentage of sales, especially labor, freight and technology spending.
- Management’s explanation for changes in merchandise mix and promotional intensity.
Cash generation and capital allocation
Do not mix operating cash flow and free cash flow
Home Depot said it generated $16.3 billion of cash flow from operations in fiscal 2025. It spent $3.7 billion on capital expenditures, paid $9.2 billion in dividends and repaid $5.0 billion of long-term debt. Lowe’s reported $7.7 billion of free cash flow and returned $2.6 billion through dividends.
Operating cash flow measures cash produced by operations before capital expenditures. Free cash flow generally subtracts capital expenditures, but companies can define the measure differently. A fair comparison requires taking each company’s operating cash flow, capital spending, acquisitions, working-capital movements and debt activity from the same reporting period. The headline figures still show that Home Depot has the larger absolute cash engine, but they do not prove that one business converts every sales dollar into cash more efficiently.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Investors should also avoid treating dividend dollars as a payout ratio. Home Depot’s larger dividend total partly reflects its larger earnings and shareholder base. To compare sustainability, divide dividends by the same-period earnings and by consistently defined free cash flow, then examine debt-funded distributions and the cash left for reinvestment.
Capital spending and acquisitions
Home Depot’s $3.7 billion of fiscal-2025 capital expenditures funded stores, supply-chain capacity, technology and other long-lived assets. The company also completed the GMS acquisition for approximately $5.5 billion in aggregate cash consideration. Investors should separate cash used to maintain the existing business from cash used for expansion or acquisitions when evaluating future returns.
For Lowe’s, the key question is whether the Total Home strategy can improve productivity and professional-customer penetration without requiring disproportionate investment. Watch capital expenditures, free-cash-flow conversion and the pace of share repurchases alongside sales and margins. A retailer can report strong free cash flow in one year by reducing inventory or delaying investment, so several periods are more informative than one annual figure.

Which is the better dividend stock?
Home Depot: larger current cash capacity
Home Depot paid $9.2 billion in dividends during fiscal 2025. In February 2026, its board raised the quarterly dividend 1.3% to $2.33, which equals $9.32 on an annualized basis if that rate remains unchanged for four quarters. The increase demonstrates continued distribution capacity, but the percentage raise was modest. A dividend investor should compare that raise with earnings growth, free cash flow and the company’s debt obligations rather than viewing the increase in isolation.
Lowe’s: longer annual-increase history
A September 2026 Kiplinger review reported that Lowe’s dividend had increased annually for roughly half a century and that the company raised its quarterly payout 4% to $1.25 in May 2026. Verify the latest declaration, ex-dividend date and record date before relying on that figure, because dividend decisions can change after a review is published. If the $1.25 quarterly rate remains in place for four quarters, it represents $5.00 in annual dividends per share.
Lowe’s longer increase streak can matter to investors building an income-growth portfolio. A long record, however, does not eliminate valuation risk or guarantee that future increases will match the past. The relevant test is whether earnings and free cash flow can support future raises through a housing slowdown. The streak should be considered alongside payout ratios, debt maturities and the company’s willingness to keep investing in stores, supply chain and digital capabilities.
How to compare dividend durability
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What is the payout ratio using the latest reported earnings? | A high ratio leaves less room for reinvestment or protection during a downturn. |
| How does the dividend compare with free cash flow? | Cash coverage can reveal pressure that an earnings-only ratio misses. |
| Are buybacks competing with dividends for cash? | Repurchases can increase per-share growth but may add leverage if funded with debt. |
| How much debt matures soon? | Refinancing at higher rates can reduce cash available for distributions. |
| How cyclical are the company’s customers? | Contractor activity and discretionary projects can fall when housing activity weakens. |
| Is the dividend increase supported by operating performance? | A raise funded by weaker coverage may be less durable than a smaller raise backed by rising cash flow. |
Growth prospects and strategic execution
Home Depot’s growth case
Home Depot’s growth thesis rests on its scale, professional-customer opportunity, supply-chain reach and the potential benefits of integrating GMS. Management’s fiscal-2026 guidance calls for diluted EPS to be approximately flat to 4.0% growth. That is a measured outlook, not a forecast of rapid earnings expansion.
Because the company is already large, incremental growth may depend on winning more professional spending, improving project fulfillment and increasing productivity rather than simply adding stores. The acquisition also introduces integration and execution risk. Investors should look for evidence in professional sales, operating expenses, margins and cash returns.

Home Depot’s fiscal-2025 diluted EPS was $14.23. Comparing that figure with the fiscal-2026 guidance range helps investors distinguish a low-growth base case from an aggressive recovery assumption. If the share price implies much faster growth than management’s range, valuation risk may outweigh the company’s operating advantages.
Lowe’s Total Home strategy
Lowe’s describes Total Home as a way to grow professional-customer penetration, improve productivity and expand the customer relationship. Its investor-relations materials characterize the opportunity as a $1 trillion home-improvement sector that is large, growing and fragmented. The opportunity is substantial, but a large addressable market is not the same as guaranteed market-share gains.

Lowe’s fiscal-2025 comparable sales increased 0.2%. For the strategy to translate into superior long-term returns, investors should expect measurable progress in professional sales, project categories, digital engagement, inventory productivity and adjusted operating margin. It is also important to track whether productivity savings are reinvested in service and availability or simply offset inflation and wage pressure.
Risks that apply to both stocks
Home-improvement retailers are exposed to the housing and consumer cycles. Housing turnover, mortgage rates, home prices, renovation activity and consumer confidence influence demand. Higher interest rates can delay projects and reduce the ability of homeowners or contractors to finance work.

- Interest rates: Expensive credit can pressure large renovations and contractor activity.
- Consumer spending: Households may defer discretionary projects when budgets tighten.
- Labor and material costs: Wage, freight and commodity inflation can compress margins if prices cannot rise quickly enough.
- Trade policy: Tariffs or other policy changes can raise product costs and disrupt sourcing.
- Execution: Acquisitions, technology investments and productivity programs may deliver less than expected.
- Competition: Both companies compete with other home-improvement retailers, specialty stores, online sellers and local businesses.
- Inventory risk: A slowdown can leave retailers with excess seasonal or project-specific merchandise that requires markdowns.
The companies disclose uncertainty around these factors, but neither provides a reliable single forecast for future share returns. A strong operating year can still produce a poor investment if the purchase price already assumes exceptional growth.
Valuation should decide the final choice
The cited fiscal reports do not provide a current market valuation snapshot. Before buying either stock, collect same-day data for both companies rather than comparing an old price for one with a current price for the other.
Minimum valuation checklist
- Record the current share price and market capitalization.
- Calculate forward price-to-earnings ratios using the same analyst-estimate source and date.
- Compare free-cash-flow yield, using a consistent definition for both companies.
- Review net debt, debt maturities, interest expense and credit metrics.
- Check the latest dividend yield, payout ratio and announced increase.
- Compare consensus sales and EPS growth assumptions with management guidance.
- Run a downside case in which comparable sales weaken, margins contract and interest costs remain high.
- Test a base case that uses management’s stated outlook and a more conservative terminal growth rate.
A lower P/E does not automatically make one stock cheaper. The discount may reflect slower growth, weaker execution, higher leverage or greater cyclical risk. Conversely, a premium valuation can be justified only if the company sustains superior growth, margins or cash returns. Compare both stocks using the same fiscal period and earnings definition; mixing adjusted EPS for one company with GAAP EPS for the other can create a misleading spread.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing according to your investor profile
Choose Home Depot when scale and cash generation matter most
- You prefer the larger sales platform and more than 2,300-store network.
- You value higher reported adjusted operating margin, while recognizing the companies’ non-GAAP definitions may differ.
- You want greater absolute operating cash flow and dividend capacity.
- You are comfortable with acquisition-integration and professional-customer execution risk.
- You can accept fiscal-2026 EPS guidance that ranges from approximately flat to 4.0% growth rather than assuming a rapid rebound.
Choose Lowe’s when dividend-growth history is the priority
- You place significant value on a roughly half-century record of annual dividend increases reported in September 2026.
- You believe Total Home and productivity initiatives can close the scale and profitability gap.
- You accept that the business is smaller and that future results depend on continued execution.
- The current payout, balance sheet and valuation meet your requirements.
- You are willing to monitor whether the dividend streak remains supported by free cash flow during weaker housing conditions.
Consider owning neither yet
Waiting is reasonable when both valuations assume strong housing recovery, when debt costs are rising or when you cannot establish a satisfactory margin of safety. A watchlist price, quarterly results and dividend-quality checklist can be more useful than forcing a binary decision. Investors who already own one stock do not need to switch solely because the other has a longer streak or a larger revenue base; taxes, transaction costs and portfolio concentration also matter.
A practical decision process
- Define the job of the position. Decide whether you seek dividend growth, total return, lower business risk or exposure to a housing-recovery theme.
- Normalize the numbers. Put both companies on the same fiscal period and distinguish adjusted earnings, operating cash flow and free cash flow.
- Assess the strategy. Track Home Depot’s GMS integration and professional business; track Lowe’s Total Home progress, productivity and professional penetration.
- Stress-test the dividend. Model weaker sales, lower margins and higher refinancing costs.
- Apply valuation discipline. Compare forward P/E, free-cash-flow yield and leverage with your required return.
- Size the position. Keep the allocation consistent with the fact that both companies are exposed to the same housing, consumer and trade-policy risks.
- Review after each report. Focus on changes in comparable sales, margins, inventory, cash flow, debt and guidance rather than reacting to one headline.
- Revisit the thesis annually. Confirm that the original reason for owning HD or LOW still matches the company’s strategy, financial results and valuation.
Final verdict
Home Depot is the better fit for a long-term investor seeking scale, professional-customer reach and greater absolute cash generation. Lowe’s is the better fit for an investor who gives unusual importance to the longevity of annual dividend increases and believes its strategy can improve growth and productivity. The evidence does not support a guaranteed winner. Use current valuation, payout coverage and balance-sheet data to decide whether either stock offers an adequate return for the risks you are taking.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Home Depot or Lowe’s the better long-term stock?
Home Depot has the stronger scale, reported adjusted operating margin and absolute operating cash flow. Lowe’s has the longer annual dividend-increase record. The better choice depends on valuation, risk tolerance and whether you prioritize cash-generation scale or dividend-growth history.
Which is the better dividend stock, HD or LOW?
Lowe’s has the longer annual-increase history, reported at roughly half a century in a September 2026 review. Home Depot paid $9.2 billion in fiscal-2025 dividends and raised its quarterly payout 1.3% to $2.33 in February 2026. Compare each company’s payout ratio, free-cash-flow coverage, debt maturities and current yield before deciding.
Should I buy HD or LOW right now?
Do not decide from operating metrics alone. Record current prices, forward P/E, free-cash-flow yield, leverage, dividend coverage and analyst growth assumptions for both stocks on the same date. Buy only if the valuation provides an adequate margin of safety for housing, consumer and execution risks.

Which company is larger, Home Depot or Lowe’s?
Home Depot is materially larger. Fiscal-2025 sales were $164.7 billion versus Lowe’s $86.3 billion, and Home Depot operates more than 2,300 stores.
Which stock has better growth prospects?
Home Depot’s growth case centers on professional customers, supply-chain reach, scale and GMS integration; fiscal-2026 diluted EPS guidance is approximately flat to 4.0% growth. Lowe’s is pursuing Pro penetration, productivity and broader customer relationships through Total Home. Neither strategy guarantees superior growth, so track comparable sales, margins and cash flow.
Can Home Depot’s operating cash flow be compared directly with Lowe’s free cash flow?
No. Home Depot reported $16.3 billion of operating cash flow, while Lowe’s reported $7.7 billion of free cash flow. Operating cash flow is measured before capital expenditures; free cash flow generally subtracts them, with company-specific definitions. Reconcile both filings before making an efficiency comparison.
What are the biggest risks for both stocks?
Both are sensitive to housing turnover, mortgage and other interest rates, consumer spending, labor and material costs, trade policy, competition and execution. A housing slowdown can reduce discretionary projects and contractor activity, while higher costs can pressure margins.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDoes Lowe’s dividend streak make it safer than Home Depot?
Not necessarily. A long increase streak is evidence of historical consistency, not a guarantee of future safety. Evaluate current earnings, free cash flow, payout ratios, debt maturities and the effect of a housing downturn.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Home Depot fits investors seeking scale and larger absolute cash generation; Lowe’s fits investors prioritizing a longer dividend-growth history. Check live valuation, leverage and payout coverage before choosing either stock.
