Home Craving is a recipe and ingredient-substitution project by Andre Fernandes for people living away from home who want to cook familiar dishes despite hard-to-find ingredients. Fernandes says it can generate a recipe from a dish name, adapt a recipe you provide, suggest substitutes, and point to nearby shops. These are the builder’s descriptions; the available account does not independently verify recipe quality, current availability, or local stock.
What Home Craving is designed to do
Fernandes presents Home Craving as a way to handle a common cooking problem abroad: you know what you want to eat, but an ingredient from home is missing from the local supermarket. The project article gives “Kerala beef fry” and “vada pav” as examples of dish names a user might enter; it does not report how often people search for them.
Generate a recipe from a dish name
Enter the name of a familiar dish and the site is described as producing a recipe. The article does not establish how closely generated recipes match a particular family’s or region’s version, so treat the result as a starting point rather than a guaranteed authentic recipe.
Adapt an existing recipe
You can paste in a family recipe and ask for ingredient adaptations. This makes the tool relevant when you already have a preferred version but cannot obtain one or more ingredients where you live.

Find substitute ideas and nearby shops
The project describes suggestions for replacing difficult-to-find ingredients, along with likely nearby shops and an online reference price. Shop discovery depends on location, and the online price is not a local shelf price or confirmation that a shop has the item in stock.
Follow spoken steps and exclude ingredients
Fernandes also describes cooking steps that can be read aloud and a list of foods to exclude from every recipe, intended for allergies or other restrictions. The article does not independently validate how reliably exclusions are honored. For a serious allergy, verify every ingredient and preparation detail yourself rather than relying on generated output.

How to judge a suggested substitute
A replacement ingredient can be available locally yet still change the dish. The project article says Home Craving’s substitution score considers flavor, texture, moisture, acidity, and heat, on a 0-to-100 scale. Fernandes describes the initial substitution data as builder-authored and the score as a rough guide until real ratings accumulate; it should not be read as a tested probability of success.
- Check the role of the ingredient: Decide whether it contributes heat, acidity, moisture, texture, or a distinctive flavor.
- Check whether the substitute is obtainable: Nearby-shop suggestions are not verified inventory, so confirm availability with the seller.
- Adjust cautiously: Begin with a small amount when the replacement is stronger, hotter, or more acidic than the original.
- Use your own judgment: The account does not provide an independent comparison against the original recipe or other recipe tools.
What the project article establishes—and what it does not
The account describes the intended features and some implementation choices, but it is not an independent product test. In particular, it does not establish present-day service availability, recipe accuracy, substitution reliability, shop inventory accuracy, or performance against other models.

Fernandes reports that the app uses Gemma through a hosted API for recipes and substitutions, FastAPI for the application, OpenStreetMap services for location and nearby shops, SerpApi for online reference prices, ElevenLabs for spoken steps, and Render for hosting. Those are the builder’s reported implementation details, not a guarantee that each integration remains available or works consistently.
The article also says the hosted demo is open-weight but not offline or private, and that Fernandes had not benchmarked it against a closed model. Anyone considering entering a personal family recipe should not assume that the demo provides offline use or privacy.

A brief comment from Fernandes’s friend Sarah in the UK says the tool showed a recipe and alternatives available there. That is an informal anecdote, not a formal review or evidence of broader performance.

The concept is most relevant if you cook away from home, have a dish in mind or a family recipe to adapt, and are willing to check suggested substitutions and shop information yourself. If fidelity matters more than convenience, compare the result against a trusted recipe and evaluate whether each replacement preserves the original ingredient’s role. The project article supplies no comparative test results, so it cannot establish that Home Craving is more accurate or useful than another approach.
