Best starting point for most home offices: the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301sdw has the clearest fit for moderate household workloads, with automatic duplex printing, a 50-sheet ADF, dual-band Wi-Fi and a 150–2,500-page recommended monthly volume. Choose the faster HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 4301fdw when your workload is closer to 750–4,000 pages per month or you need fax. The other three models below are credible candidates identified in a manufacturer comparison, but the available material does not establish complete, current specifications, prices or independent test results for them.

This is therefore a specification-based shortlist, not a hands-on ranking. Manufacturer speed, duty-cycle and yield figures are rated values; real output depends on documents, software, network conditions and maintenance.

How this shortlist was assembled

A useful home color laser all-in-one must do more than print in color. It should combine printing, scanning and copying, provide the document-feeding capacity you actually need, fit your available space, and have toner that is practical to replace. Fax is optional for many households, so the exact model suffix matters.

The two HP models have current manufacturer specifications available: the 3301sdw page was published May 18, 2026, and the 4301fdw support specification was reviewed October 7, 2026. The Brother, Canon and Xerox candidates come from an older HP comparison document dating from about 2023. That document is useful for generating candidates, but it is not a neutral home-printer test and does not confirm current regional availability, pricing or every specification.

Only the HP rows have enough current, model-specific data here for a defensible workload recommendation. The remaining models should be treated as comparison leads rather than proven winners.

1. HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301sdw: the moderate-volume home-office option

Functions and paper handling

HP specifies print, copy and scan for the 3301sdw. Fax is not listed for this SKU, so do not assume that the “MFP” label includes fax. Automatic two-sided printing is included. The main input tray holds 250 sheets, with a separate one-sheet priority feed for envelopes or occasional specialty media. A 50-sheet automatic document feeder handles multi-page copying and scanning.

Speed and workload fit

The rated print speed is up to 26 pages per minute in both black and color. HP cites ISO/IEC 24734 for the speed claim and warns that actual speed varies with the computer system, software, driver and document complexity. HP gives the printer a 40,000-page maximum monthly duty cycle but recommends 150–2,500 pages per month for normal use. The recommended range is the more useful number for a household: a maximum duty cycle describes a ceiling, not a sensible recurring workload.

For example, a home office producing several hundred invoices, school packets and shipping documents each month is within the stated range. A business regularly approaching 4,000 pages should look at the 4301fdw instead.

Scanning workflow

HP rates scanning at up to 19 pages per minute in black and 8 pages per minute in color. The 50-sheet ADF reduces manual page swapping, but the available specification does not establish automatic duplex scanning. Automatic duplex printing and duplex scanning are separate capabilities: a printer can print both sides while still requiring you to turn a two-sided original over manually.

Connections and placement

The listed connectivity includes dual-band Wi-Fi. Ethernet, USB details, dimensions, weight, operating-system support and supported scan destinations are not stated in the reviewed material, so verify them against the exact regional listing before planning a network installation or a tight shelf location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Toner and ownership

HP names the 218A black replacement toner for this model at approximately 1,300 pages. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a measured household yield. The available information does not establish color-cartridge yields, cartridge prices, a price per page, included-cartridge yields or warranty terms. Check all four cartridge part numbers and current local prices; a low printer price can be offset by expensive color replacements.

2. HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 4301fdw: faster output with fax

Functions and document feeding

The 4301fdw specification includes printing, copying, scanning and faxing. The “f” suffix is significant: unlike the 3301sdw, this SKU is documented with fax. It also has automatic duplex printing and a 50-sheet ADF. Duplex scanning is not established by the available specification, so confirm that feature if you routinely digitize two-sided originals.

Speed and recommended volume

HP rates the 4301fdw at up to 35 pages per minute in both black and color. Normal scan speed is listed as up to 31 pages per minute in black and 28 pages per minute in color. Its maximum monthly duty cycle is 50,000 pages, while the recommended monthly volume is 750–4,000 pages. That recommendation, rather than the 50,000-page ceiling, is the appropriate basis for deciding whether it belongs in a home office.

The model makes sense when several people share the printer, when color reports are frequent, or when waiting for 26-ppm output would be disruptive. It is likely excessive for occasional household printing, especially if fax is irrelevant.

What remains to verify

The reviewed specification does not provide dimensions, weight, tray capacity, Wi-Fi or Ethernet details, USB behavior, operating-system support, scan destinations, cartridge yields, prices or warranty terms. Obtain those values for your country and outlet before purchase. A 50-sheet ADF is useful, but it does not tell you whether the machine can scan both sides in one pass or whether a particular cloud destination is supported.

  • Color, Wireless, Duplex 4-in-1: Print, scan, copy, fax.

3. Brother MFC-L8690CDW: a candidate requiring current regional verification

The Brother MFC-L8690CDW appears in HP’s comparison document alongside the HP 4301/4302 family, Canon i-SENSYS MF754Cdw, Xerox C315 and Kyocera ECOSYS M5526cdw. That establishes it as a relevant color laser multifunction candidate, not as a tested recommendation.

The available material does not state its current function set, ADF capacity, duplex-scan behavior, print or scan speed, recommended monthly volume, tray capacity, dimensions, weight, connectivity, operating-system support, toner yields, pricing or warranty. Those omissions matter at home: a model can look attractive on a nameplate but be a poor fit if it is too large, lacks the scan workflow you need or has costly cartridges in your region.

Verification checklist for this model

  • Confirm whether the exact suffix provides fax as well as print, copy and scan.
  • Check whether duplex printing and one-pass duplex scanning are both supported.
  • Record ADF capacity and the manufacturer’s recommended monthly volume.
  • Confirm wireless, Ethernet and USB options, plus mobile and cloud scan destinations.
  • Price every replacement toner color and identify the stated yield for each cartridge.

4. Canon i-SENSYS MF754Cdw: another candidate, not a verified home winner

Canon’s i-SENSYS MF754Cdw is also named in the older comparison document. The material available for this article does not provide a complete current specification sheet. Consequently, it cannot support a claim about its speed, feeder capacity, fax availability, duplex scanning, physical footprint or ownership cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before considering it for a home office, look for a current listing for your country rather than assuming that an identically named model has the same radio, warranty or cartridge configuration everywhere. i-SENSYS naming is regional, and a suffix change can alter connectivity or included functions.

Questions to answer on the current product page

  • Does the SKU include fax, or only print, copy and scan?
  • Is automatic two-sided printing standard, and does the ADF scan both sides automatically?
  • What are the normal black and color print speeds under the stated test method?
  • What monthly volume does Canon recommend for recurring use?
  • Which toner family is supplied, what are the rated yields, and what do replacements cost locally?

5. Xerox C315: compare the workflow, not just the model name

The Xerox C315 is the fifth candidate in this specification-based shortlist. The source material identifies it for comparison but does not establish a current, complete set of specifications. It would be misleading to assign it a rank or declare it the best home option without those values and a documented test.

For this model, pay particular attention to scan handling. A household that scans receipts or signed forms one page at a time may be satisfied with a basic ADF, while a home business digitizing two-sided contracts needs one-pass duplex scanning and a feeder sized for the batch. Those are different requirements from automatic duplex output.

Information to confirm before buying

  • ADF sheet count and whether it accepts the paper sizes you use.
  • One-pass duplex scanning versus manual two-sided scanning.
  • Wireless-band support, Ethernet, USB and mobile-print protocols.
  • Recommended monthly volume, not only the maximum duty cycle.
  • Included and replacement toner yields, local cartridge prices and warranty duration.

How to choose the right type for your home

Choose by monthly pages

  1. Estimate your real monthly output by adding typical invoices, school material, forms, labels and reports.
  2. Use the manufacturer’s recommended monthly volume as the target range.
  3. Treat maximum duty cycle as a limit to avoid exceeding, not as a promise of economical continuous operation.

On the documented figures, the 3301sdw is the better match for 150–2,500 pages per month, while the 4301fdw is aimed at 750–4,000 pages. The ranges overlap; choose between them using speed, fax and space requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose by document workflow

If you mostly print two-sided documents, automatic duplex output saves paper handling. If you scan two-sided originals, require explicit duplex-scanning support; neither HP specification supplied here proves that capability. For occasional copying, a 50-sheet ADF is usually more useful than a very high maximum duty-cycle number.

Choose by connectivity

Confirm that the printer supports the way your household works: dual-band Wi-Fi for a wireless home network, Ethernet for a fixed office connection, USB for a directly attached computer, and the mobile or cloud destinations used by your phones and tablets. The 3301sdw explicitly lists dual-band Wi-Fi; the other connection details are not established here.

Choose by available space

Laser all-in-ones need clearance for trays, the ADF lid and ventilation. Measure the shelf, then compare the manufacturer’s dimensions with every tray and lid fully open. Because dimensions and weights are not provided for the five candidates as a complete set, do not rely on a retailer thumbnail or a closed-printer measurement.

Toner economics: calculate before committing

Use a simple cost-per-page calculation for each cartridge: cartridge price divided by its stated yield. Calculate black and color separately, then estimate your own mix of monochrome and color pages. Keep the qualification attached to every result: yields are manufacturer estimates and can vary with coverage, image density and maintenance cycles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the 3301sdw, the only named replacement is HP 218A black at approximately 1,300 pages. No current price or color-yield figures are established here, so a complete ownership comparison is not possible until you obtain local prices for all four colors. Do not infer that one model is cheaper merely because its printer price is lower.

Setup checklist for a new color laser all-in-one

  1. Verify the model suffix on the carton and invoice; do not substitute a nearby SKU with different fax or connectivity features.
  2. Place the printer on a rigid surface with clearance for the ADF, output tray and ventilation.
  3. Install the manufacturer’s current driver and firmware for your operating system.
  4. Connect Wi-Fi or Ethernet, then print a configuration page to confirm the assigned network address.
  5. Set paper size and type in both the printer and driver so duplex jobs use the correct media profile.
  6. Run a one-page black test, a color test and a two-sided test before loading a large batch.
  7. Test a multi-page ADF scan and check whether the destination, file format and page order match your workflow.
  8. Record cartridge part numbers and the displayed remaining-yield estimate for future ordering.

Common mistakes and fixes

Assuming “MFP” means fax

Check the suffix and the function list. The 3301sdw is specified for print, copy and scan, while the 4301fdw specification includes fax.

Confusing duplex printing with duplex scanning

Look for a separate statement about automatic or one-pass duplex scanning. If it is absent, assume that two-sided originals may require manual turning until the manufacturer confirms otherwise.

Buying for the maximum duty cycle

Use the recommended monthly volume for recurring work. A 40,000- or 50,000-page maximum does not mean a household should operate at that level every month.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring cartridge availability

Search the exact cartridge family before buying the printer. Confirm genuine and compatible options, stated yields and local stock; a printer that cannot be supplied with affordable toner is not a practical home device.

Skipping a network test

After setup, print from every intended device and scan to the destinations you actually use. A printer can appear connected while a phone, guest network or operating-system driver cannot discover it.

Which one should you buy?

  • Moderate home-office printing: HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301sdw, provided you do not need fax and its local toner pricing works for you.
  • Higher recurring volume or fax: HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 4301fdw, with a 750–4,000-page recommended monthly range and higher rated speed.
  • Brother, Canon or Xerox candidate: consider only after checking a current regional specification sheet, cartridge prices, footprint and warranty; the available evidence does not justify ranking one above the documented HP models.

The decisive checks are function accuracy, recommended monthly volume, ADF and duplex-scan behavior, network compatibility, physical clearance and total toner cost. Those checks prevent the most expensive home-printer mistakes: buying a faxless SKU by accident, exceeding a sensible workload, or discovering that the scanning and cartridge workflow does not match your household.
