Home Assistant can automate more than lights responding to motion. With compatible devices and integrations, it can react to someone sitting still, a wet patch beneath a sink, a vibration, or a changing pollutant reading. Here are six less obvious sensor ideas—and what each actually measures.
What makes a sensor useful in Home Assistant?
A sensor supplies a reading or event; Home Assistant uses it in automations, dashboards, and notifications. The integration often provides the automation logic, while a separate device supplies the data. Compatibility depends on the exact device model and integration, so check both before choosing hardware.
These six ideas are practical possibilities, not a claim that any sensor makes a home autonomous. The documentation supports the kinds of entities and automations described, but it does not establish a universal ranking for accuracy, cost, or ease of installation.

1. How can I tell if someone is still in a room?
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) presence sensors are designed to detect a person who remains still, unlike motion sensing that depends on movement. Some devices also expose room zones, which can support automations tied to a particular area.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Home Assistant Required】Works only with Home Assistant, an open-source smart home platform for local control and automation. Home Assistant must already be installed and running on a computer. Basic familiarity required.
- 【Advanced Radar Sensing】Uses millimeter-wave radar to detect both moving and stationary objects up to 20 ft (6 m) indoors. Offers higher precision and more flexible automation than traditional PIR sensors, while covering a larger area with fewer units.
- 【Compact, Plug-and-Play Design】Built with the HLK-LD2410B radar module and Seeed C3 controller featuring an external Wi-Fi antenna. Powered by USB-C - no batteries required.
- 【Easy Integration with Home Assistant - No ESPHome Setup Needed】Pre-flashed with ready-to-use ESPHome firmware. Simply connect to the device’s hotspot and enter Wi-Fi credentials - no manual configuration or flashing required.
- 【Certified Components】All main components (HLK-LD2410B and Seeed C3) are FCC-certified, ensuring compliance and reliable operation.
Aqara describes its wired FP2 as covering up to 40 m² and exposing presence and zone data to third-party ecosystems, including Home Assistant. That coverage figure and performance description are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. Check the current Home Assistant Aqara integration and the exact model before planning a zone-based automation: Aqara FP2 product information and Home Assistant’s Aqara integration.
A zone could, for example, help control lighting or media based on where presence is detected. Confirm that the model and configuration expose the zone information your automation needs.
2. Can one device combine presence and room conditions?
The open-source Everything Presence One project combines mmWave presence, motion, illuminance, temperature, and humidity in a single device and integrates with Home Assistant through ESPHome. That mix of signals can support automations such as adjusting lights based on presence and brightness, or using temperature as another condition.

- Compatible with other Zigbee Ecosystems Easily integrates with Home Assistant via SONOFF Zigbee Dongles and works with Alexa and SmartThings through compatible Zigbee hubs.
The project description does not establish universal availability, comparative accuracy, or a setup that works without configuration. Review the project’s current documentation and requirements before treating it as a ready-to-use device: Everything Presence One project.
3. Can Home Assistant respond to indoor air quality?
Yes, if a compatible integration supplies pollutant readings. Home Assistant’s Air quality integration is a building block, not a hardware sensor to install by itself. It can provide triggers and conditions for entities such as PM2.5, PM10, CO2, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ozone, and nitrogen dioxide, as well as gas or smoke detection entities where available.
For instance, an automation could notify you when a supported reading crosses a threshold, or control an air purifier. The available readings depend on the sensor and its integration; one device will not necessarily report every pollutant. A sensor reading is not a medical diagnosis. See Home Assistant’s Air quality integration documentation.

Its minimalist design blends seamlessly into any modern interior, delivering powerful functionality without visual clutter.
4. Can Home Assistant detect water under a sink or dry soil in a pot?
Yes. Home Assistant distinguishes moisture on a surface or in material from humidity in the air. A binary wet/dry leak sensor can trigger an alert when water reaches the area beneath a sink. A numerical soil-moisture reading can instead support a plant-watering reminder.

5. How do I get an alert when something vibrates?
Home Assistant’s Vibration integration supports triggers and conditions for binary vibration entities. A compatible sensor attached to a door, drawer, or other object could prompt a notification when it is disturbed or shaken.

The integration defines an automation category, not a security guarantee. Results depend on the selected hardware, where it is attached, and how its integration reports vibration. See Home Assistant’s Vibration integration documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Can a Home Assistant weather station show lightning distance?
Some supported weather-station integrations expose lightning strikes and an estimated distance to a storm. Home Assistant’s WeatherFlow integration documents lightning strike data and estimated distance; its Ecowitt integration lists lightning count and distance alongside readings such as rain and soil moisture.
That can feed a dashboard or notification, but estimated distance is not an exact locator. You also need compatible weather-station hardware and the corresponding integration. Check the supported data for your setup in the WeatherFlow integration and Ecowitt integration.
What should I check before choosing one?
- What the device measures: presence, air pollutants, surface or soil moisture, vibration, or outdoor weather data are different signals, not interchangeable features.
- Where the reading comes from: identify the hardware and the Home Assistant integration that supplies its entities.
- Installation constraints: check wiring, placement, hubs, and networking requirements for the particular device.
- What happens if the reading is wrong: a missed leak alert has different consequences from a light that fails to switch off. Set thresholds and automation actions accordingly.
- Exact compatibility: a broad claim of ecosystem support does not confirm that every model, regional version, or feature works the same way in Home Assistant.
Home Assistant also documents power and energy sensor categories. A compatible power meter could support an automation that notices a washing machine’s load change, but the setup depends on suitable metering and a chosen threshold. Power describes a current load; energy tracks accumulated use. See Home Assistant’s Power integration documentation and its Energy documentation.
