Home Assistant can send a camera snapshot to an AI Task and use the result in a sensor or automation. To keep that analysis local, the AI provider must also run locally—Home Assistant documents Ollama as one option. The software makes this workflow possible, but it does not guarantee that every image or camera stream in a particular setup stays off the cloud. Check the camera integration, AI provider, and any remote-access services in your own configuration.

How Home Assistant camera analysis works

Home Assistant’s AI Task integration is a building block used by other integrations. Its ai_task.generate_data action can accept an image attachment, a prompt, and a requested data structure. In Home Assistant’s example, a camera image is sent as JPEG media and the AI is asked to count birds; the numeric result is then used in a template sensor. The project also describes placing AI Tasks in automations, scripts, or template entities. Home Assistant AI Task documentation and its September 11, 2025 article show this pattern.

That is snapshot analysis, not necessarily continuous video analysis. The project example schedules an image task every five minutes. You can instead use an event to trigger a scan where the chosen integration supports it. The workflow therefore has three independent choices: a camera entity Home Assistant can access, an AI task provider, and the machine or service that runs that provider.

What “local” means in this setup

Home Assistant documents Ollama as an option for locally hosted AI. The Ollama server may run on the Home Assistant machine or another computer on the network; Home Assistant must be able to reach it. The integration configuration includes the server URL, model, context window, and whether the model may control Home Assistant. Ollama is available for macOS, Linux, and Windows. See the Ollama integration documentation.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

AI Tasks and the Ollama conversation-agent integration are related, but they are not interchangeable labels for a single feature. Home Assistant’s project article identifies Ollama as a local AI option for AI Tasks, while the Ollama integration page documents its conversation agent. Confirm which integration and Home Assistant version you are using before following feature-specific setup instructions.

A local model is only one part of the data path. Home Assistant can use local or cloud AI providers, and a camera integration or remote-access service may have its own network behavior. Schoutsen’s project article characterizes local LLMs as extending choice and privacy; that is not proof that a specific installation keeps every image local. Check which service receives the attachment and whether the camera feed and any remote access remain on your local path.

Check that Home Assistant can access the camera

Home Assistant’s Camera integration provides common camera actions, including taking a snapshot and playing a stream, while other integrations create the camera entities. The Generic Camera integration can use IP camera URLs for still images or streams and documents an RTSP stream example. That establishes useful input patterns, not compatibility with every camera model. See the Camera documentation and Generic Camera documentation.

  • Verify that the camera’s integration exposes a usable camera entity and snapshot or stream.
  • For an IP camera, confirm that the still-image URL or RTSP stream is reachable from the relevant Home Assistant or provider host.
  • Trace where the image goes when the AI action runs; a locally reachable camera does not by itself establish that the AI provider is local.

Choose when images are analyzed

Scheduled snapshots

A scheduled AI Task can inspect a still image at intervals, as in Home Assistant’s five-minute example. This is suited to periodic checks; it does not require sending every video frame for analysis.

Event-triggered scans

For applicable image-processing integrations, Home Assistant documents a long scan interval and calling the scan action only after motion is detected. That can avoid unnecessary processing. The Image processing documentation covers this pattern. Camera stream preloading may reduce viewing latency, but it consumes additional machine resources, according to the Camera documentation.

Frigate as an optional camera stack

Frigate can provide local camera recording and object detection alongside Home Assistant, but it is a separate service rather than a requirement for AI Tasks. Its official integration requires Frigate to be installed and running and MQTT to be configured. It can expose camera streams, detected-object images, performance and object-count sensors, and motion entities. Details are in the Frigate Home Assistant integration documentation.

Use AI results carefully

Image descriptions and detections can be wrong. Treat them as fallible signals, not definitive evidence, and do not make a safety-critical automation depend solely on an AI interpretation.

The Ollama integration marks control of Home Assistant by the model as experimental. Its documentation recommends exposing fewer than 25 entities when experimenting with local LLM control and warns that smaller models are more likely to make mistakes. These cautions concern model control, not a guarantee of image-recognition accuracy. Hardware and model requirements vary; the cited Home Assistant documentation does not provide universal sizing guidance.

Before calling the setup cloud-free

  • Identify the camera integration and confirm how it supplies snapshots or streams.
  • Identify the AI Task provider and the host that processes the attached image.
  • Verify whether the image attachment and camera stream stay on the intended local network path.
  • Account for remote-access services and any other integrations that might transmit camera data.
  • Choose scheduled or event-triggered analysis according to the task, and keep AI output out of safety-critical decisions unless independently verified.
