HOLogram’s Input Vault is a proposed privacy component, not a working, cross-browser shield. Its design aims to preserve what a person types while removing the timing patterns that can reveal information about how they type. But capturing an event early in a browser’s event flow does not necessarily hide it from the page, and the project has not yet established a reliable interception method across browsers or input methods.
What the Input Vault is designed to do
HOLogram describes the Input Vault as its first module: a layer intended to intercept native keyboard events, remove identifying timing information, then emit synthetic events carrying the semantic content the page needs. The design’s central distinction is: “The semantic content of what you type must be preserved exactly. The temporal pattern must not.” That is an intended privacy property, not a result demonstrated by a completed implementation.
The project repository describes a ShadowDOM Input Vault for isolating native events and removing typing micro-timings. It also outlines other planned components, including pointer and scroll normalization, a persona mixer, differential-privacy processing, and exposure budgeting. Those broader components do not establish that the Input Vault—or the larger protocol—is already providing protection.
Why listening early may not hide the original keystroke
Browser extensions, page scripts, and extension background code run in different execution contexts. A content script can add a document listener in the capture phase, which receives an event before target and bubble listeners. But a page can also register its own document capture listener. The project’s article warns that such a listener may still observe the original event and its timestamp.

In other words, “capture phase” describes a place in event propagation; it is not proof that the page is isolated from the native input. To claim that timing has been hidden, a solution would need to establish that the page cannot access the original event before any sanitized replacement reaches it. The project material does not establish such a route.
Interception approaches under investigation
The project article considers several possible layers. It does not identify a universally available method or a proven winner.

These are research directions, not recommendations for a protection readers can enable today. The key comparison is not simply which listener runs first: it is whether the page can observe the original event, whether the input element must be controlled, what browser permissions are required, and whether the resulting events preserve the behavior sites expect.

- Key identity, including
key,code, and legacy fields named in the article. - Modifier state, such as whether modifier keys are active.
- The expected event sequence.
- Event properties including bubbling, cancelability, and composed behavior.
These are requirements in the design, not proof that synthetic events can be made indistinguishable from native ones or that they will work with every site. Changing timing while preserving compatibility is a core challenge: a page may depend on event ordering or properties, while the privacy goal is to prevent it from learning the original temporal pattern.
IME and composition input remain open questions
Input Method Editors (IMEs) often represent text entry through composition events—compositionstart, compositionupdate, and compositionend—rather than only the familiar keydown, keypress, and keyup sequence. This matters for Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, and other composition-based input: handling ordinary key events alone would not demonstrate that text entry works correctly.

BaffiSan’s DEV Community article states, “How the Input Vault handles IME input is an open question.” It does not provide a validated handling strategy. Support for IME and composition input therefore remains unestablished and would need real-browser testing, alongside checks for event ordering and accessibility-related behavior.

Project status and what would establish progress
As of October 7, 2026, the HOLogram GitHub repository’s status table lists the whitepaper as published and the reference implementation, HOLogram Layer Protocol specification, and compliance tests as in progress. The repository also says the project is seeking contributors. These are maintainer-reported status statements, not an independent audit or confirmation of a completed implementation. The repository describes the principle that “The content of every interaction is preserved exactly”; this is a stated design property, not a measured result.

Before the Input Vault could be treated as practical protection, the project’s own open questions point to several concrete tests and decisions:
- Identify the earliest feasible interception point in each supported browser and test whether a page can still read the original event or its timestamp.
- Document the browser APIs and manifest permissions required, and distinguish behavior by browser.
- Measure timing differences introduced by interception and re-emission rather than assuming they remove the signal.
- Test event semantics and compatibility with real pages, including cancellation, composition, and input sequences.
- Validate IME handling in real browsers before claiming support for composition-based input.
Until an implementation and compliance tests establish these properties, the Input Vault is best understood as a design proposal for separating input meaning from typing rhythm—not as a feature that currently intercepts and anonymizes keystrokes.
