Short answer: the Clifton 10 is a substantial specification and upper redesign, but it is not an automatic upgrade for every runner. HOKA gives the newer shoe a higher heel, a different advertised drop, a revised jacquard upper, a more accommodating fit option and a double-lace lock. Those changes make the Clifton 10 the more logical choice when you want more heel underfoot or the Clifton 9 feels narrow or lets its tongue move. If the Clifton 9 already fits well and you prefer its lower advertised drop, changing models may offer little benefit.

This guide answers “Hoka Clifton 10 vs. Clifton 9: what changed, and is the upgrade worth it?” by separating HOKA’s published specifications from RTINGS’ measurements, then translating both into a practical buying decision.

Clifton 10 vs. Clifton 9 at a glance

The most consequential differences are in the heel geometry and the upper. The figures below are HOKA’s advertised specifications, not independent measurements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Feature Clifton 9 Clifton 10
Advertised heel stack 32 mm 42 mm
Advertised heel-to-toe drop 5 mm 8 mm
Upper Earlier Clifton 9 upper design New double jacquard knit upper
Fit description Existing Clifton 9 fit Refined, roomier fit with an extra-wide option
Tongue-management feature No Clifton 10 double-lace-lock claim applies Double-lace lock intended to help limit tongue migration

HOKA presents these changes as part of the Clifton 10’s update rather than as a completely different type of shoe. The company still positions the Clifton as a cushioned daily trainer for regular maintenance miles. HOKA’s product page calls it “the keystone of our cushioned styles for 10 years and counting,” so the 10 is best understood as a revision of an established everyday platform, not a change into a racing or specialized trail shoe.

What changed in the Clifton 10’s geometry?

A higher advertised heel

HOKA says the Clifton 10 adds 10 mm of foam at the heel compared with the Clifton 9. More material under the rear of the shoe can alter the way a runner perceives landing height, stability and the transition toward the forefoot. It does not, by itself, prove that the shoe will feel softer, more stable or more comfortable for every person. Foam formulation, geometry, foot shape, pace and running style all affect the experience.

The important buying implication is that the Clifton 10 is not simply the Clifton 9 with a cosmetic refresh. A runner who deliberately chose the Clifton 9 because it sat lower may notice the newer shoe’s taller platform immediately. A runner who wants more material beneath the heel may regard that same change as the main reason to move to the 10.

“42 mm” and “32 mm” are heel-stack figures, not a measurement of the entire shoe’s cushioning quality. Stack height tells you how much material is advertised beneath a particular part of the foot; it does not reveal every detail of foam density, flex, rocker shape or how stable the platform will feel on your route. Use the figures to identify the design direction, then use an on-foot test to decide whether that direction suits you.

A different advertised drop

HOKA lists an 8 mm heel-to-toe drop for the Clifton 10 and 5 mm for the Clifton 9. Drop describes the difference between the shoe’s heel and forefoot heights; it is not the same measurement as total stack height.

An increased drop can change how a shoe feels during a stride, particularly for runners who are sensitive to the relative height of the heel and forefoot. That is a preference and adaptation question, not a universal performance or injury rule. If you have been comfortable in the Clifton 9, treat the Clifton 10 as a geometry change and introduce it gradually rather than assuming the two models will feel interchangeable on day one.

Do not infer that the 8 mm model is automatically more suitable for a particular runner or that the 5 mm model is inherently more natural. A shoe’s fit, foam behavior and your own movement interact with the drop. The useful question is whether the Clifton 10’s relative heel height feels better to you during a complete run, not whether one number is universally superior.

Upper, tongue and width changes

Double jacquard knit upper

HOKA identifies a new double jacquard knit upper on the Clifton 10. The company describes the material as breathable and says it has fine-tuned the fit. “we’ve fine-tuned the fit and added a breathable jacquard upper with double-lace lock to mitigate tongue migration,” HOKA says on its product page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“To mitigate” is important wording. It describes the design objective, not a guarantee that every runner will experience a perfectly centered tongue or a more secure feel. Foot volume, lacing tension, socks and individual movement can still determine whether the upper works for you.

The material change matters even if the outsole and general role of the shoe look familiar. Knit construction can change how pressure is distributed over the top of the foot, while the revised fit may change how much room you feel around the forefoot and midfoot. Those are experiential differences, so compare the shoes with the same socks and at the same stage of your stride rather than judging from photographs or a standing fit alone.

Extra-wide availability

The Clifton 10 is offered in an extra-wide option, which gives runners with broader feet another fit choice within the model. That does not mean every Clifton 10 size or color is available in every width or market, so check the width selector for the exact pair you intend to buy.

HOKA’s “roomier fit” language should also be treated as a model-level description rather than a substitute for trying the shoe on. A roomier forefoot can help one runner and feel less secure to another, especially if that runner has a narrow heel or prefers a close upper. Extra width addresses lateral space; it does not automatically change heel volume, instep height or the length you need.

Double-lace lock

The Clifton 10 adds a double-lace-lock design intended to limit tongue migration. If the Clifton 9’s tongue moved during runs, this feature is a specific reason to test the newer model. It remains a fit aid, not an assurance: the lacing pattern must still match your foot, and the shoe should be evaluated while walking and running rather than only while standing.

Use the lock without cinching so tightly that the upper creates pressure. If the tongue stays centered but your toes or instep feel compressed, the fit problem has not been solved. Conversely, if the Clifton 9’s tongue stayed in place for you, the new feature may make no meaningful difference and should not alone justify replacing a well-fitting pair.

Advertised specifications versus independent measurements

Published specifications and physical measurements are not interchangeable. RTINGS measured its test shoes and obtained values that differ from HOKA’s advertised numbers, especially for heel-to-toe drop. The following table reproduces RTINGS’ side-by-side measurements.

RTINGS measurement Clifton 9 Clifton 10
Measured heel stack 39.2 mm 41.6 mm
Measured forefoot stack 30.9 mm 31.7 mm
Measured heel-to-toe drop 8.3 mm 9.9 mm
Advertised drop listed by RTINGS 5 mm 8 mm
Internal length of tested shoe 274 mm 280 mm
Forefoot width of tested shoe 87 mm 98 mm

These are RTINGS’ sample- and method-specific results, not a replacement for HOKA’s size chart and not a promise that every size will measure identically. Manufacturing tolerances, size scaling and measurement technique can all affect a physical result. The practical conclusion is not that one source is “right” and the other is “wrong”; they describe different things. HOKA’s numbers are the model’s advertised geometry, while RTINGS’ numbers describe the particular pairs and method used in its comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RTINGS’ tested Clifton 10 was 6 mm longer internally and 11 mm wider across the forefoot than its tested Clifton 9. That is consistent with the newer model’s roomier fit direction, but it still should not be treated as a universal conversion rule. A different size, width, production run or foot shape can produce a different result. Use those measurements as context when a standard Clifton 9 feels cramped, not as permission to order a size solely from a millimeter difference.

The measured drop also illustrates why it is important to label each number. RTINGS recorded 8.3 mm for the Clifton 9 and 9.9 mm for the Clifton 10, while listing HOKA’s advertised drops as 5 mm and 8 mm. A measurement method may include the outsole, insole, compression or a particular reference point in ways that differ from the manufacturer’s specification. Keep the two sets separate when comparing fit or planning a transition.

What RTINGS’ laboratory tests show

RTINGS also compared energy return and cushioning using its own laboratory measures. These scores can help describe a controlled comparison, but they do not predict subjective comfort or real-world performance for every runner.

RTINGS laboratory measure Clifton 9 Clifton 10
Heel energy return 68.1% 71.1%
Forefoot energy return 68.6% 71.1%
Heel cushioning score 7.6 8.4
Forefoot cushioning score 7.9 7.8

The Clifton 10 scored higher in RTINGS’ heel energy-return and heel-cushioning measures, while the forefoot cushioning scores were close, with the Clifton 9 slightly higher in that test. Those results support describing the 10 as a changed platform, not as a shoe that wins every metric. They also cannot establish that you will run faster, feel less fatigue or avoid discomfort in one model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The small difference in forefoot cushioning is especially relevant for runners who choose a shoe by how the front of the platform feels. If your priority is heel cushioning, the RTINGS comparison gives the 10 a stronger result in that specific laboratory test. If you care most about forefoot cushioning, the test does not show a clear advantage for the newer model. Either way, the percentages and scores are comparative measurements, not promises about a particular route, pace or body.

Which runners are most likely to prefer the Clifton 10?

Choose the Clifton 10 when the geometry matches your preference

  • You want the newer model’s higher advertised heel and 8 mm advertised drop.
  • You prefer a roomier fit or need to investigate an extra-wide version.
  • You want to test the revised double jacquard upper rather than retain the Clifton 9’s existing upper.
  • Tongue movement in the Clifton 9 has been an annoyance and you want to try the double-lace-lock design.
  • RTINGS’ measured results suggest the newer shoe’s test sample aligns more closely with the dimensions you are seeking, while recognizing that the figures are not a universal sizing chart.
  • You are replacing a worn Clifton 9 and want the current version’s design rather than seeking an identical replacement.

Stay with the Clifton 9 when its fit already works

  • The Clifton 9’s lower advertised drop is part of why you selected it.
  • Your current pair gives you the heel hold, forefoot space and tongue position you want.
  • You do not need an extra-wide option or a revised upper.
  • You would be changing only because the model number is newer, without a specific problem to solve.
  • You want the same geometry and familiar feel for an upcoming training block rather than introducing a variable.

“Newer” is therefore not the deciding variable. The deciding variable is whether one of the Clifton 10’s changes addresses a concrete preference or fit issue.

How to compare the fit before buying

  1. Identify the problem with your current shoe. Write down whether the issue is heel movement, forefoot pressure, tongue migration, insufficient room or simply a preference for a different heel-to-forefoot relationship.
  2. Check the exact width and size. The Clifton 10’s extra-wide option is meaningful only if it is offered in the size and color you need. Do not assume that a standard-width Clifton 10 will feel the same as an extra-wide pair.
  3. Try both shoes with your usual socks. Sock thickness can change the amount of room available and the way the jacquard upper wraps your foot.
  4. Walk, jog and use stairs if possible. Look for heel lift, pressure across the forefoot and tongue movement while your foot is moving. Standing still tests only part of the fit.
  5. Use the lacing system without overtightening. Test the double-lace lock as intended, but do not compensate for a fundamentally incorrect width by creating pressure with the laces.
  6. Check both feet. Width and volume can differ from one foot to the other. Judge the larger or more sensitive foot, and make sure your toes can move without touching the front when you walk and jog.
  7. Transition conservatively. Because the advertised geometry differs between models, alternate short, easy outings with your familiar shoe until you know how the Clifton 10 feels over a complete run.

If an in-person comparison is impossible, use the seller’s return policy as part of the decision. Confirm that the policy covers worn-once indoor or outdoor testing before placing the order. Keep the box, tags and packaging until you have checked the fit, and verify whether the policy treats different widths as separate products.

Price, stock and regional details

The cited HOKA and RTINGS material does not establish a current price or stock position for either model. Clifton 9 availability can vary because it is the predecessor, and Clifton 10 availability can differ by country, size, width and color. Check the retailer serving your region at the time of purchase rather than relying on an old listing or assuming that the older shoe is automatically cheaper.

Also verify that a listing identifies the exact model and width. A product page that says only “Clifton” is not sufficient for a comparison in which the heel geometry, drop and upper have changed. Check the seller, return terms and listed size system as well as the headline price. A lower listed price is useful only if the correct width is in stock and can be returned if the fit is wrong.

Common mistakes when interpreting the comparison

Mixing advertised and measured numbers

HOKA’s stack and drop figures and RTINGS’ physical measurements answer different questions. Keep the source attached to every number. Combining them into a single “true” specification obscures the distinction and can lead to a mistaken fit expectation.

Treating laboratory scores as a comfort guarantee

Energy-return percentages and cushioning scores are controlled comparative measures. They do not account for your foot shape, running surface, pace, socks, lacing or personal sensitivity. Use them as context, not as a substitute for fit.

Assuming a wider option solves every fit issue

Extra width can address forefoot crowding, but it may not solve heel slip or an upper that feels too tall. Evaluate the entire foot hold, not just the room at the toes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming the new tongue feature eliminates movement

The double-lace lock is intended to mitigate tongue migration. HOKA does not present it as a guarantee, so inspect the tongue while moving and adjust the lacing before deciding.

Using one measured shoe as a sizing chart

RTINGS’ 274 mm and 280 mm internal-length figures and 87 mm and 98 mm forefoot-width figures belong to the specific pairs it tested. They are useful for understanding the comparison, but they cannot tell you exactly what your size will measure. Use HOKA’s size and width information, then confirm with a try-on or returnable purchase.

Is the Clifton 10 worth upgrading to?

The Clifton 10 is worth considering when you can name a benefit you expect from its higher advertised heel, changed drop, revised upper, extra-wide availability or double-lace lock. Those are tangible changes that distinguish it from the Clifton 9.

The upgrade is harder to justify when your Clifton 9 already fits securely, its lower advertised drop suits your stride and you have no complaint about the upper. RTINGS’ laboratory results do not show a universal sweep for the Clifton 10: it performed better in some heel-focused measures, while the forefoot cushioning scores were nearly even. That pattern supports a preference-led decision rather than a blanket recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think of the decision as a problem-solving exercise. If the Clifton 9’s forefoot is too narrow, the Clifton 10’s roomier description and extra-wide option deserve a direct test. If your complaint is a moving tongue, the double-lace lock is a rational feature to evaluate. If your current shoe is comfortable and you simply want the newest label, the evidence gives no reason to expect a guaranteed improvement.

Verdict

Choose the Clifton 10 if its new geometry or fit features solve a problem for you; choose the Clifton 9 if its established fit and lower advertised drop are exactly what you want. The evidence supports calling the Clifton 10 a meaningful update, not proving that it is universally better.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the biggest difference between the Clifton 10 and Clifton 9?

HOKA’s biggest listed change is the advertised heel geometry: 42 mm and an 8 mm drop for the Clifton 10 versus 32 mm and a 5 mm drop for the Clifton 9. The 10 also gets a new double jacquard knit upper, a refined roomier fit, extra-wide sizing and a double-lace lock intended to limit tongue migration.

Is the Clifton 10 more cushioned than the Clifton 9?

HOKA advertises 10 mm more heel foam in the Clifton 10. In RTINGS’ laboratory comparison, the 10 had a higher heel-cushioning score (8.4 versus 7.6), while forefoot cushioning was nearly even (7.8 versus 7.9). Those controlled results do not guarantee that every runner will perceive the 10 as more comfortable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the Clifton 10 fit wider?

HOKA describes the Clifton 10 as roomier and offers an extra-wide option. RTINGS measured a 98 mm forefoot width for its Clifton 10 sample versus 87 mm for its Clifton 9 sample. Those are sample-specific measurements, not a universal sizing chart, so verify the exact width and try the shoe on when possible.

Will the Clifton 10’s double-lace lock stop the tongue from moving?

It is intended to mitigate tongue migration, according to HOKA. That wording describes a design goal rather than a guarantee. Lacing tension, socks, foot shape and movement still affect whether the tongue stays centered.

Are the Clifton 9 and Clifton 10 advertised drops the same?

No. HOKA lists a 5 mm advertised drop for the Clifton 9 and 8 mm for the Clifton 10. RTINGS’ own measured drops were 8.3 mm and 9.9 mm, respectively, which shows why advertised specifications and independent measurements should be kept separate.

Should I upgrade if my Clifton 9 still fits well?

Not necessarily. If the Clifton 9’s fit, tongue position and lower advertised drop suit you, there is no universal requirement to change. Consider the Clifton 10 when its higher heel, revised upper, roomier or extra-wide fit, or double-lace lock addresses a specific preference or problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Clifton 9 automatically cheaper than the Clifton 10?

The available HOKA and RTINGS material does not establish current prices or stock. Check your regional retailer for the exact model, size, width and color instead of assuming the predecessor is cheaper or available.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: the Clifton 10 is a real update, centered on a higher advertised heel, an 8 mm advertised drop, a revised jacquard upper, roomier and extra-wide fit options, and a double-lace lock. Buy it when one of those changes solves a specific fit or ride preference. Keep the Clifton 9 when its lower advertised drop and familiar fit already work; the available comparisons do not prove that every runner benefits from upgrading.
