Choose the Clifton 10 if you want the lighter of these two listed men’s variants, an 8 mm drop and a balanced daily trainer for running and walking. Choose the Bondi 9 if your priority is HOKA’s plusher, high-stack feel, a 5 mm drop, or a shoe explicitly positioned for walking and recovery as well as running. Those are manufacturer specifications and use descriptions—not independent lab results or a substitute for trying the shoes. Your foot shape, preferred feel and the exact local variant should make the final decision.

Clifton 10 or Bondi 9: the short answer

Both models are everyday shoes rather than specialist racers. HOKA describes the Clifton 10 as a daily trainer for running and walking, while the Bondi 9 is presented for everyday running, lifestyle use, walking and recovery. In practical terms, the Clifton 10 is the more versatile starting point when you want a lighter, more balanced ride; the Bondi 9 is the more obvious choice when maximum softness and a substantial platform matter most.

  • Pick Clifton 10 for a lighter listed men’s variant, an 8 mm heel-to-toe drop, and cushioning HOKA places between balanced and plush.
  • Pick Bondi 9 for the plush end of HOKA’s scale, a 5 mm drop, and an intended-use list that specifically includes recovery and lifestyle wear.
  • Try both if you are unsure about width, heel hold or how the different drops feel. The reviewed pages are Australian listings, and local sizes, widths, colors and stock can differ.

Neither shoe can be declared universally better from the available evidence. HOKA’s figures describe the products; they do not prove that one prevents injury, makes you faster, returns more energy or lasts longer for every runner.

How HOKA positions each model

Clifton 10: a daily trainer for running and walking

On its Australian product page, HOKA lists the Clifton 10 for everyday running and walking and places its cushioning on a balanced-to-plush scale. HOKA calls it “A trusted trainer for daily maintenance miles, the Clifton has been the keystone of our cushioned styles for 10 years and counting.” That sentence is marketing copy from HOKA, not an independent assessment.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The model is therefore the logical baseline for someone who wants one pair for regular road miles, easy outings and ordinary walking without deliberately seeking the softest possible sensation. It is not evidence that every runner will find the Clifton stable or comfortable; those outcomes depend on individual fit and preference.

Bondi 9: plush running, walking and recovery

HOKA’s Bondi 9 page lists everyday running, lifestyle, walking and recovery. It describes the shoe as “One of the hardest working shoes in the HOKA lineup, the Bondi 9 delivers peak plushness for everyday miles.” Again, this is the manufacturer’s product-page language rather than a laboratory or clinical finding.

That broader use list matters if you expect to stand or walk for long periods, want a recovery-oriented shoe after harder sessions, or prefer a visibly substantial platform underfoot. A plush description does not guarantee that the shoe will suit your stride, arch, width or tolerance for a lower drop.

Published specifications compared

The table uses the figures shown in HOKA Australia’s launch articles and men’s product pages. Because the listed weights come from different color and size variants, they are useful orientation points, not a controlled same-size test. The Bondi 9 launch material available here reports only a heel-stack figure, so it would be misleading to turn it into a complete heel/forefoot comparison.

Specification or use Clifton 10 Bondi 9 What the number means
HOKA-stated uses Everyday running and walking Everyday running, lifestyle, walking and recovery Both cover daily use; Bondi’s page explicitly adds lifestyle and recovery.
Heel-to-toe drop 8 mm 5 mm A 3 mm difference in the published geometry, not a prediction of performance or injury risk.
Stack figures in launch articles 42 mm heel / 34 mm forefoot 43 mm heel Clifton has both ends reported; the available Bondi figure is heel only.
Cushion description on product page Balanced to plush Plush end of the scale Bondi is the clearer option if “softest feel” is your starting requirement.
Weight shown on reviewed men’s page 277.83 g for one color variant 297 g for one color variant Clifton is lighter in these listings, but sizes and variants are not matched.
Width information found Launch article says standard, wide and extra-wide Complete range not verified in the reviewed result Confirm the exact width and size offered by your local SKU.

Source details are available in HOKA’s Clifton 10 launch article, Bondi 9 launch article, Clifton 10 product page and Bondi 9 product page.

Is the Bondi 9 more cushioned than the Clifton 10?

HOKA’s own descriptions support that interpretation: the Bondi 9 is placed at the plush end of the product-page scale and is marketed around “peak plushness,” while the Clifton 10 is described as balanced to plush. That is the strongest evidence-based distinction between the pair.

Do not confuse the descriptions with a measured softness score. The available material does not provide durometer readings, impact testing, energy-return measurements or an independent side-by-side ride test. A shoe can feel softer to one person and less comfortable to another because of foot shape, body mass, pace, surface and lacing. Treat “more cushioned” here as HOKA’s positioning and likely design intent, not a guaranteed sensation for every foot.

What the 8 mm and 5 mm drops mean

Clifton 10’s 8 mm drop

Drop is the difference in sole height between the heel and forefoot. The Clifton 10’s published 8 mm drop creates a greater heel-to-forefoot height difference than the Bondi 9’s 5 mm specification. It may feel familiar to runners who normally wear moderate-drop trainers, but the specification alone cannot predict how your ankle, calf or stride will respond.

Bondi 9’s 5 mm drop

The Bondi 9’s 5 mm drop is lower by 3 mm. Some runners prefer that geometry; others notice extra demand in the calves or Achilles when changing from a higher-drop shoe. No supplied evidence establishes a universal injury effect, and neither model should be chosen as a medical treatment.

How to change drops cautiously

If your current shoes have a substantially different drop, use short, easy outings to evaluate the new pair instead of making it your only shoe on day one. Pay attention to calf tightness, Achilles soreness, forefoot pressure and any persistent pain. Stop and seek qualified clinical advice for pain that is sharp, worsening or changes your gait. This is a sensible transition practice, not a claim that either drop is inherently safer.

Understanding the stack figures without over-reading them

HOKA’s Clifton 10 launch article reports 42 mm at the heel and 34 mm at the forefoot. The Bondi 9 launch article reports a 43 mm heel stack. Those values indicate that both shoes use substantial foam under the foot, but they are not a complete like-for-like stack table: the available Bondi information does not state its forefoot height.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stack height is also not identical to softness. Foam formulation, geometry, insole, upper fit and your own loading all influence the ride. A taller platform may feel protective or stable to one wearer and cumbersome to another. Use the figures to understand the design category, then use a real try-on to judge whether the platform feels controlled during walking and running.

Weight: why the Clifton listing is lighter, with an important caveat

The reviewed men’s Clifton 10 page lists 277.83 g for one color variant; the reviewed Bondi 9 page lists 297 g for one color variant. That makes the Clifton listing 19.17 g lighter, but the comparison is not a laboratory weigh-in of identical sizes. HOKA’s pages show different variants, and shoe weight changes with size and construction details.

In use, a lower listed weight can be attractive for daily miles or runners who dislike a substantial shoe. A heavier shoe is not automatically slower or less comfortable, particularly if its platform and cushioning suit your mechanics. Do not use the two page figures to promise a pace improvement or to rank durability.

Which shoe fits common use cases?

Mostly everyday running

Start with the Clifton 10 if you want a conventional daily-trainer role, the lighter listed variant and an 8 mm drop. Start with the Bondi 9 if your overriding requirement is a plush sensation and the extra mass does not bother you. Run in both at an easy pace if possible; a short jog reveals heel movement and forefoot flexibility that a standing try-on cannot.

Running plus ordinary walking

Either can cover this combination because HOKA lists running and walking for both. Clifton is the simpler choice when you want one balanced shoe that does not feel excessively substantial. Bondi makes more sense when walking comfort and a soft platform outrank a lighter feel.

Long periods on your feet

Bondi’s product positioning explicitly includes walking, lifestyle and recovery, so it deserves first consideration for standing-heavy days. Check that the heel is secure and that the forefoot does not compress your toes; plush foam cannot compensate for a poor fit.

Recovery after harder training

Bondi is the only model of the pair whose HOKA-stated use list includes recovery. That makes it the more direct match for this intention, provided its 5 mm drop and fit agree with you. “Recovery” is a use label, not evidence that it accelerates physiological recovery.

Travel, errands and lifestyle wear

Bondi’s page explicitly includes lifestyle use. Clifton can still work for casual walking, but choose based on the shape and feel you will tolerate for several hours, not on the label alone.

Fit and width: the part specifications cannot settle

Clifton 10 width options

HOKA’s Clifton 10 launch article says the model comes in standard, wide and extra-wide widths. Availability can vary by country, size and color, so verify the actual local product listing rather than assuming every combination is stocked.

Bondi 9 width availability

The reviewed Bondi 9 result did not establish a complete width range. Look for the width selector on your regional page and confirm the SKU before ordering. If the page does not clearly state a width, ask the retailer rather than inferring it from photos or another country’s listing.

A practical try-on checklist

  1. Try both shoes late in the day or after a normal walk, when feet are closer to their everyday size.
  2. Wear the socks and, if appropriate, orthotics you will actually use.
  3. Leave roughly a thumb’s width in front of the longest toe while standing.
  4. Check that your heel stays seated when walking and jogging without overtightening the laces.
  5. Look for pressure at the little-toe joint, instep and Achilles area; those points usually indicate shape or width problems rather than a need to “break in” pain.
  6. Walk stairs and turn corners. A high, soft platform should still feel controllable to you.
  7. If both fit, choose the ride you prefer at your intended pace instead of selecting by color, quoted stack or marketing language.

A step-by-step buying decision

  1. Define the primary job. Write down whether the pair is mainly for running, mixed running and walking, long standing shifts, recovery or lifestyle wear.
  2. Choose the cushioning direction. Select Clifton first for balanced-to-plush cushioning; select Bondi first when plushness is the deciding feature.
  3. Check drop tolerance. Compare each model’s 8 mm or 5 mm specification with the drop you currently wear. If the change is large, plan a gradual transition.
  4. Confirm the local width and size. Clifton’s stated standard, wide and extra-wide range is not a promise that every market stocks every size. Bondi’s complete width range was not established in the reviewed result.
  5. Compare the exact SKU. Record size, width, color and listed weight. Do not treat 277.83 g and 297 g as same-size measurements.
  6. Test movement, not just standing comfort. Walk, jog, turn and stop. Reject a pair that creates slipping, pinching or pain even if its specifications look ideal.
  7. Use the return policy intelligently. Keep the packaging and follow the seller’s conditions so you can return an unworn or test-worn pair if the fit fails. Policies and regional consumer rights vary.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Calling the Bondi 9 “better” because it is plusher

Plushness is a preference, not a universal quality score. A softer ride can feel less precise to someone who prefers ground feedback, while another runner may value the cushioning immediately. Use the Bondi description to identify the intended feel, then test it.

Comparing incomplete stack data as if it were a full specification

Clifton’s 42/34 mm heel-and-forefoot figures cannot be directly paired with Bondi’s available 43 mm heel figure to announce which has more foam at every point. The missing Bondi forefoot value matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming listed weights are directly comparable

The pages show different men’s variants and may represent different sizes. Treat the numbers as directional only; weigh identical sizes yourself if that precision is important.

Buying the wrong width to obtain a preferred color

Color does not fix a narrow toe box or a loose heel. Select the width that holds your foot without pressure and confirm that the retailer’s size chart applies to your region.

Switching drops abruptly

A 3 mm difference is small on paper but can still feel noticeable. Alternate with your familiar shoes and increase duration only when your calves and Achilles remain comfortable.

Expecting specifications to answer a medical question

Neither the product pages nor the launch articles establish injury prevention, treatment, gait correction or a durability winner. For recurring pain, swelling, numbness or a diagnosed condition, obtain advice from a qualified clinician who can assess you in person.

What is established—and what is not

The manufacturer sources establish each model’s stated uses, published drop, the cited Clifton stack figures, the cited Bondi heel stack, the two page-specific weights and Clifton’s stated width options. They do not establish an independent side-by-side ride score, same-size laboratory weights, complete Bondi width availability across markets, regional prices, current inventory, durability or a universal fit recommendation.

Check your country’s HOKA page or retailer for current price, stock, tax, size and width information. The Australian pages linked above may not reflect another market’s naming, materials or return terms.

Bottom line: Clifton 10 or Bondi 9?

Make the Clifton 10 your first try if you want a lighter listed variant, an 8 mm drop and a balanced everyday trainer for running and walking. Make the Bondi 9 your first try if you want HOKA’s explicitly plush option, a 5 mm drop, and a model positioned for walking, lifestyle use and recovery as well as running. Once the intended use is clear, fit and comfort outrank every published number. Try the exact width and size available in your market, and transition gradually if the drop differs substantially from your current shoes.
