If you mean Hogwarts Legacy, the Harry Potter–universe action RPG, you can maintain more than one playthrough. The game uses both autosaves and manual saves, and a Warner Bros. Games support response quoted in a 2023 Steam Community discussion reports four character slots, with five autosaves and ten manual saves for each character. Treat those exact limits as reported rather than a guarantee for every platform or version.
Your Hogwarts house is chosen near the beginning and is not presented as a switchable setting later in the same run. To experience another house identity, create a separate character. Choices do matter in selected quests and storylines, but the official FAQ explicitly says there is no morality system, and the evidence does not support treating every conversation as a major branch of the campaign.
What the save system in Hogwarts Legacy actually stores
There are two different kinds of progress records:
- Autosaves are created at key moments. Warner Bros. Games Support confirms that the game records progress automatically, but an autosave is not a substitute for keeping a deliberate backup before an important decision.
- Manual saves are created by the player from the in-game save controls. They let you preserve a particular point in a quest, provided the game allows saving at that moment.
A save slot is a point-in-time record inside a character run. A character slot is the separate run itself, with its own house, quest progress, inventory and decisions. Confusing the two is the reason players sometimes overwrite a useful checkpoint while trying to start a second character.
Reported capacity
A Warner Bros. Games support reply quoted by a 2023 Steam Community discussion reports the following arrangement:
#1 Best Overall
| Save area | Reported amount | What it means | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Character slots | 4 | Up to four independent character runs | Reported in a community post quoting support; not freshly confirmed in the current support page |
| Autosaves per character | 5 | Recent automatic checkpoints for that run | Same secondary report |
| Manual saves per character | 10 | Player-created checkpoints for that run | Same secondary report |
Use those numbers as a planning guide, not as a platform-wide specification. The official support material reviewed here confirms that autosaves and manual saves exist, but it does not restate the exact counts. Menu labels or limits can also differ after updates, so check the storage screen on your own edition before assuming that a slot is available.
How to keep an existing run and start another character
The safest method is to leave your current character intact and use another character slot. Do not begin a new game by saving over the only manual file you care about.
- Make a deliberate checkpoint. Open the pause menu and use the game’s Save option to create a manual save while you are in a normal playable state. Give yourself a recent record before leaving the run.
- Confirm the file belongs to the intended character. On the load screen, identify the character and the visible progress information before deleting or replacing anything.
- Return to the title or character-selection flow. Choose the option to start a new character rather than loading the existing one and changing its latest save.
- Select an unused character slot. The reported configuration provides four character slots, but verify what your platform displays.
- Choose the new house during the opening setup. House selection is an early character decision, so make the choice for this run rather than expecting to revise the first character later.
- Keep separate manual checkpoints. Use one or more manual slots for the new run, especially before a quest with a decision you may want to revisit.
Manual saves are practical insurance, not a guarantee that every dialogue line can be replayed. The sources confirm that players can create saves, but they do not establish that saving is available during every cutscene, mission stage or combat encounter. If the Save command is unavailable, finish the current restricted activity and save at the next permitted point.

Can you change your Hogwarts house?
No supported mechanic described by the official FAQ lets you switch a character from one house to another halfway through the story. The FAQ says that players can choose their Hogwarts house at the start of Hogwarts Legacy. That wording makes house selection an opening character identity choice, not a later menu setting.
If you want to see another house’s common-room identity and opening flavor, create a second character. This preserves the original run and avoids treating a house change as if it were a cosmetic adjustment. You can maintain several house-focused characters as long as you stay within the character capacity shown by your version.
Do choices matter in Hogwarts Legacy?
Yes, but not in the form of a universal good-versus-evil score. The official FAQ states: “Hogwarts Legacy does not have a morality system, but players will encounter various quests and storylines that will influence the witch or wizard they choose to become.” In practical terms, the game presents decisions and lets them express the kind of witch or wizard you are playing, without displaying a single morality meter that rates every action.
The same FAQ describes difficult choices in quests and scenarios, as well as relationships with companions that develop during play. That means choices are part of the role-playing experience even when a particular conversation only changes a line of dialogue or the tone of an exchange.

What is not established
There is no evidence here for four completely separate house campaigns. The official material confirms the house choice, but it does not claim that each house receives a wholly different main plot. A second house run can provide different identity, introductory context and discoveries without being a new game from beginning to end.
Which decisions have the clearest consequences?
Spoiler warning: the examples in this section refer to quest outcomes and late-story consequences.
Third-party walkthroughs from GameWith and Game8 describe a limited group of decisions as more consequential than ordinary dialogue. Their coverage commonly points to choices connected with Sebastian’s questline and to decisions associated with the ending. Depending on the choice, a quest result, available reward, later event or ending presentation may differ. These guides are useful explanations, not an official exhaustive decision map, so treat their individual claims as guide-reported rather than as a publisher guarantee.
Most routine dialogue options should not be described as uniformly decisive. Some alter a response, reveal a different piece of context or let you role-play a particular attitude without restructuring the main story. The reliable way to preserve optionality is to create a manual save before a major quest decision when saving is available, then make the choice and observe the result. Keep the original file if you may want to explore the alternative later.

| Replay dimension | What a new run can provide | How much structural change to expect |
|---|---|---|
| House identity | A different common-room identity and house-based role-playing perspective | Confirmed as an opening choice; not evidence of a wholly separate campaign |
| Quest decisions | Different outcomes, rewards or later events in a limited set of storylines | Selective; guide-level sources do not establish that every choice branches |
| Companion relationships | Different attention to companion quests and dialogue | Relationships develop during play, but no complete route-by-route matrix is established here |
| Exploration and discovery | New opportunities to notice locations, puzzles, collectibles and systems you missed | Primarily player-driven rather than a guaranteed house-exclusive map |
| Post-story cleanup | Remaining activities can be pursued after the main story according to a third-party guide | Guide-reported; confirm the current behavior in your edition |
The result is meaningful but bounded replayability. A second character is worthwhile if you want another house identity, a different role-playing style, or a chance to make a small number of high-impact quest decisions differently. It is less compelling if you expect every house to unlock an entirely distinct campaign.

Before a major decision
- Finish any optional activity you want to preserve and create a manual save in an available slot.
- Note the character and quest context shown by the load screen so you do not confuse two similar files.
- Leave at least one older manual save untouched instead of rotating through every slot.
After the decision
- Allow the game to create its next autosave, then make another manual save if the menu permits.
- Play far enough to see the immediate consequence before deciding whether to return to the earlier file.
- Keep the branch you prefer and delete only files you can identify with confidence.
When beginning a house replay
- Use a new character slot, not a replacement save inside the original character.
- Give the run a simple identifying name or remember its house and creation order if your platform does not support custom labels.
- Maintain separate manual-save rotation for each character so a decision in one run cannot overwrite a checkpoint in another.
Platform, edition and transfer cautions
The official FAQ discusses physical and digital copies and lists supported platforms. It also notes that a physical copy requires an internet connection for the Day 1 patch. Those details concern installation and edition context, not a promise that saves move between systems.
The sources reviewed do not establish cloud-save behavior, cross-platform transfer or cross-generation transfer. Do not assume that a character created on one platform can be loaded on another, or that changing editions preserves every save. Check the current support information for your exact platform and version before deleting local files or changing hardware.
How to decide whether another playthrough is worth it
- Start another character for a house experience. House is chosen at the beginning, so a separate run is the supported way to adopt another house identity.
- Replay a questline for consequences. If a decision in a companion or ending-related storyline interests you, preserve a manual checkpoint and explore the alternative.
- Replay for completion. A guide reports that unfinished side quests can remain available after the main story, so you may not need a full restart merely to clean up optional content.
- Do not restart for every line of dialogue. Many ordinary exchanges do not substantially alter the main plot, and the game has no morality meter that tracks all of them.
The central distinction is between flexibility and branching. Multiple character slots and manual files give you room to preserve runs, while selective quest consequences give some decisions weight. Together they support several distinct versions of your adventure without turning every choice—or every house—into a separate campaign.
