Hogwarts Legacy is still officially a single-player game. Warner Bros. Games’ FAQ describes it as “a single player experience and does not have online or co-op gameplay.” A separate fan project called Hogwarts MP can place multiple players in the same Hogwarts and Highlands world, but it is a community-hosted multiplayer framework—not an official mode and not a finished cooperative version of the main story.
The practical difference is therefore bigger than simply “adding friends.” Hogwarts MP supplies synchronized player characters, spells, broom flight, mounts and proximity voice on servers whose rules are defined by their hosts. Quest and campaign synchronization is not complete, and every server can expose a different set of systems.
The short answer: official Hogwarts Legacy is solo; Hogwarts MP is a multiplayer sandbox
The standard PC, PlayStation and Xbox versions of Hogwarts Legacy do not have an online lobby, co-op campaign or built-in multiplayer. You cannot invite a friend into your save through an official menu, and the game’s story progression is designed for one player.

Hogwarts MP changes the experience by adding a networked layer maintained by the mod community. On a compatible PC installation, players can connect to a community server, see one another as full characters and share parts of the open world. The project documents synchronized appearance, gear, spells, wand-light effects, broom flight and creature mounts. It also supports proximity voice, with normal speech described as carrying about 25 metres and push-to-talk enabled by default.

That does not turn the original campaign into a completed four-player or massively multiplayer story. Hogwarts MP’s own feature information says shared story or quest progression is not finished. Think of it as a framework for shared exploration, combat and server-designed activities rather than “co-op Hogwarts Legacy.”
What the official game actually provides
A single-player open-world action RPG
The official game gives one player control of a student exploring Hogwarts, the surrounding Highlands and the surrounding quest world. Characters, combat encounters, inventory and progress belong to that player’s save. Other people cannot join that save through an official online feature.
No built-in online or co-op mode
Warner Bros. Games’ official FAQ is unambiguous: “Hogwarts Legacy is a single player experience and does not have online or co-op gameplay.” That statement applies to the released game itself, regardless of whether the copy was purchased through Steam, Epic Games Store or a console storefront.
Official PC mod support is not multiplayer
The official Hogwarts Legacy Creator Kit distributed through CurseForge lets PC creators build or publish content such as quests, dungeons, skins and cosmetics, with in-game discovery for supported creations. That sanctioned modding system is separate from Hogwarts MP’s fan-made online framework. Installing an ordinary Creator Kit mod does not add networking, shared characters or a multiplayer lobby.
What Hogwarts MP adds to the world
Visible, persistent-feeling player presence
With Hogwarts MP, connected players appear as complete characters rather than abstract markers. The project describes synchronized appearance and gear, so other participants can see the equipment and visual identity being used by their companions. Wand-light effects are synchronized as well, making another player’s active illumination visible in the shared space.
This changes exploration from a private tour into a social activity. Friends can move through Hogwarts and the Highlands at the same time, meet at landmarks and travel as a group. The effect is closer to a shared-world server than to a conventional drop-in companion who temporarily joins the host’s story.

Synchronized spells and combat movement
The multiplayer framework documents synchronized spells, allowing participants to cast in the same space and see those actions represented for one another. It also documents synchronized broom flight and creature mounts. Players can therefore fly together, travel between locations as a group and use mounts while remaining visible to the other people on the server.
These capabilities make cooperative encounters and informal group activities possible, but they should not be read as proof that every official combat encounter has been redesigned for co-op. Server scripts and installed resources determine what a particular server actually enables.
Proximity voice communication
Hogwarts MP supports proximity voice. The project describes ordinary speech as reaching roughly 25 metres, so a player near you can hear you while someone farther away may not. Push-to-talk is enabled by default, which means you normally hold the configured key while speaking rather than transmitting continuously.
Voice range is a world rule, not a replacement for a universal party-chat system. A server operator can combine voice with role-play rules, events or other scripts, but the exact social setup depends on that server.
What remains unfinished or server-dependent
No completed shared campaign
The most important limitation is quest and story synchronization. Hogwarts MP does not currently provide a finished system in which every participant advances through the official campaign together, sees the same quest state and receives guaranteed matching rewards. Calling it a cooperative story mode would overstate its current capabilities.

Features are scripts, not guaranteed modes
Server scripts can control weather, time, seasons, non-player-character behavior, interactable objects, economy, inventory, role-play systems and player-versus-player-style rules. Those are framework capabilities. They are not a promise that every server has implemented every system.
The same distinction applies to frequently requested activities. Quidditch, duels, house-based activities, beast care and other custom modes may be built by a server community, but they are not guaranteed built-in Hogwarts MP features. Before joining, read that server’s rules and feature list rather than assuming that a named activity is available everywhere.
Reliability follows the host and the build
Community servers can install different resources and scripts, so behavior, rules and stability can vary. A server that emphasizes role-play may configure a different economy or inventory system from one focused on free exploration. Joining also requires the client and server to use compatible builds or channels; a version mismatch can prevent a connection even when the operating system and game edition are correct.

The capacity figures are server limits, not a promise that every session will contain 32 or 128 active people. Actual population, latency and available activities depend on the host and its configuration.
Who can use Hogwarts MP?
Client platform and game edition
The documented client setup is Windows using the Steam or Epic Games edition of Hogwarts Legacy. That means a console copy is not covered by the project’s stated client requirements. A Windows installation also needs to use the game edition and build expected by the server you are joining.
Dedicated-server requirements
The project documents dedicated servers for Windows x64 and Linux x86-64. A server operator therefore needs a machine running one of those architectures, plus the project’s server resources and scripts. Operating a server is a separate task from launching the modded client; the host must maintain the server build and any content required by its ruleset.

Build and channel matching
Check the project’s release channel and the server’s required build before connecting. Hogwarts MP lists testing release 1.9.1, published 16 October 2026, and warns that source changes made after that release should not be assumed to exist in the distributed testing build. A server or client using a different channel can therefore have features or compatibility behavior that does not match the testing package.

How to decide whether the mod fits your goal
Choose the official game when the story is the priority
Use the unmodified game if your main objective is to complete the authored campaign, keep a predictable save and experience quests exactly as the publisher designed them. That is the only option of the two that is explicitly built around a solo story progression system.
Choose Hogwarts MP for shared exploration
Hogwarts MP is the better fit when the goal is to walk around Hogwarts with friends, fly together, cast spells in the same space, communicate by proximity voice or participate in a server’s custom activities. Its value comes from presence and flexibility rather than a finished cooperative narrative.
Choose a server by its rules, not its name
Read the server’s description for its enabled scripts, role-play expectations, economy, inventory behavior, combat rules and voice policy. Two servers can use the same framework while offering very different experiences because weather, seasons, NPC behavior, interactables and other systems are configurable.
Practical setup checklist for a Windows player
The following checklist reflects the project’s documented requirements without implying that every server uses identical files or rules.
- Confirm the platform. Use a Windows PC and a Steam or Epic Games edition of Hogwarts Legacy. Console installations are outside the documented client setup.
- Identify the server’s channel. Ask which Hogwarts MP release and channel the server uses. Compare that requirement with the client package you intend to run.
- Match the build. Do not assume that a newer source change is present in testing release 1.9.1. The distributed testing build is the version identified by the project for that release, while later source changes may not be included.
- Read the server feature list. Verify whether the server enables voice, custom economy or inventory rules, role-play systems, PvP-style rules, mounts, house activities or other scripts. Framework support alone does not activate them.
- Check connection expectations. Confirm the server’s player limit and any required resources before joining. The framework’s documented default is 32 players, with support for up to 128, but a specific host may choose a smaller or differently configured session.
- Configure communication. Because push-to-talk is enabled by default, test the assigned key and microphone before relying on proximity voice. Remember that the documented normal speech range is roughly 25 metres.
- Use the host’s support instructions. If a connection fails, provide the server operator with your game edition, operating system, Hogwarts MP channel and build. Those details identify compatibility problems more reliably than simply reporting that “multiplayer does not work.”
Troubleshooting the common points of confusion
“I installed a PC mod, but no multiplayer menu appeared.”
Most PC mods are not networking frameworks. The official Creator Kit supports quests, dungeons, skins and cosmetics, but those additions do not create shared sessions. Confirm that you installed Hogwarts MP specifically rather than an ordinary single-player mod.

“My friend and I both own the game, but we cannot join the same session.”
Ownership alone is not enough. Confirm that both players are on Windows, that both use the Steam or Epic edition expected by the project, and that the client and server use matching builds or channels. The server may also require resources or scripts that are not present in a basic client package.
“The server advertises duels or Quidditch, but we cannot find them.”
Those activities are server-built rather than guaranteed framework modes. Check whether the host installed and enabled the relevant scripts, whether an event is scheduled and whether the server’s current release includes them.
“We expected to continue the main quest together.”
That expectation conflicts with the project’s current status. Shared story and quest progression are not complete, so the server should be treated as a shared sandbox. You can still explore, travel, cast spells and use mounts together where the server supports them, but do not assume that one player’s campaign state will become everyone’s campaign state.

“The server has a different economy or weather cycle.”
That is consistent with the framework’s design. Weather, time, seasons, NPC behavior, interactables, economy and inventory can be controlled by scripts. A difference from another server is not necessarily an installation error; it may be an intentional rule.
Official support, community maintenance and risk expectations
The official single-player game has a publisher-defined feature set and platform support model. Hogwarts MP is maintained by a fan project and operated through community servers. That distinction affects how changes, bugs and compatibility are handled: a server owner may update scripts, change rules or move to a different project channel independently of another server.
The project’s listed testing release is version 1.9.1, published 16 October 2026. Treat that label as a snapshot of the distributed testing build, not as a guarantee that every later source change is included. Before troubleshooting a problem, establish which release the server and client actually use.
What the comparison means in practice
If you want “Hogwarts Legacy with friends” to mean a synchronized playthrough of the publisher’s quests, neither the official game nor the current Hogwarts MP framework provides that complete experience. The official game has no online mode, while the mod does not yet finish shared campaign progression.
If you mean a shared place to explore and experiment, the answer is different. Hogwarts MP can put players together in Hogwarts and the Highlands, synchronize their characters, equipment, spells, wand lights, broom flight and creature mounts, and let nearby players communicate by voice. Server scripts can then add or alter systems such as weather, seasons, NPC behavior, economy, inventory, role-play and PvP-style rules.
The trade-off is control versus consistency. The official game is consistent but solo. The mod is social and configurable but depends on a Windows PC, a compatible Steam or Epic installation, matching builds and a server whose scripts and reliability you trust. Selecting between them is therefore a choice between an authored single-player campaign and a community-run shared sandbox—not between two versions of the same official multiplayer mode.
