Most Hogwarts MP failures come from one of four causes: an unhealthy base game, an incomplete client extraction, a client/server build mismatch, or a failed resource/mod synchronization. Fix them in that order. Launch the unmodified Windows PC game through Steam or the Epic Games Store, re-extract the complete multiplayer archive to a writable folder, let one launcher finish updating, then join a server using its exact release channel, build and endpoint. The project is pre-release software, so some failures are genuine bugs rather than settings you can change.
What Hogwarts MP is—and what it is not
Hogwarts MP is a pre-release, fan-made multiplayer project for the Windows PC version of Hogwarts Legacy. You need a legitimate Steam or Epic Games Store copy of the base game. The project’s testing release is 1.9.1, published 16 October 2026; servers can require a different build or release channel, so the newest launcher is not automatically compatible with every server.
It is an independent project, not affiliated with Warner Bros., Avalanche Software or Portkey Games. Compatibility can change as the client and dedicated-server software evolve. The current experience is a multiplayer sandbox. Shared story or campaign progression remains research-stage functionality, so joining a world should not be treated as guaranteed cooperative campaign play.

- Use Windows PC Hogwarts Legacy purchased through Steam or the Epic Games Store. A copied, modified or otherwise unsupported base installation makes later testing inconclusive.
- Download a complete Hogwarts MP client archive and extract it rather than launching files from the compressed archive.
- Ask the server owner which Hogwarts Legacy version, Hogwarts MP build and release channel the world accepts. Record those values before updating.
- Obtain the owner’s server address, UDP game port, password and required CurseForge content. A browser listing is convenient but not required for a direct connection.
- Keep a clean copy of
HogwartsMP.logavailable if a maintainer requests a report. Logs are more useful when they include the lines immediately before and after the error.
The multiplayer project itself is described as free, open-source and non-commercial. You still need the legitimate base game, and a server operator may separately choose paid infrastructure. There is no published retail price, subscription or affiliate offer for the mod.

Use this order for the fastest diagnosis
- Start the base game normally. Launch Hogwarts Legacy from Steam or the Epic Games Store without the multiplayer client. If the unmodified game crashes or fails to reach its menu, repair that installation first; the multiplayer launcher cannot correct a broken base installation.
- Extract a complete client archive. Unzip the entire Hogwarts MP package. Do not launch it from inside a ZIP file. Keep
HogwartsMPLauncher.exe,HogwartsMPClient.dll,MafiaHubUpdater.exe,cef_subprocess.exeand all bundled runtime files together in a permanent, writable folder. The folder can be outside the Hogwarts Legacy installation directory. - Run only one launcher. Open
HogwartsMPLauncher.exeand wait for its channel update check to finish. During patching or a self-restart, do not open a second copy; two launchers can interrupt the update process and leave an apparently unusable client. - Match the server exactly. Confirm the requested Hogwarts Legacy game version, Hogwarts MP client build and release channel. A server that has not updated can reject a current client, and a client on another channel may remain in an endless join attempt.
- Use the correct endpoint. Select the server in the browser or use Direct Connect with the owner’s address. The default game endpoint is UDP port 27015. If the owner advertises another port, enter that port explicitly. A server missing from the browser may still accept a direct connection.
- Allow the handshake to synchronize content. Client-side scripts and resources are delivered while you connect, and supported CurseForge requirements are reconciled during the handshake. Let that process finish; do not copy a server’s resource tree into your client directory.
- Remove conflicting manual mods. If a required mod will not activate, ask the server owner which game modifications are supported and remove conflicting manual content. Keep the client and server content aligned rather than adding unverified files.
Client, server and release-channel compatibility
Think of compatibility as three separate matches: the underlying Hogwarts Legacy game version, the Hogwarts MP client/server build, and the release channel. A client can be current while a world intentionally remains on an older test release. Updating only your side can therefore create a rejection that looks like a network fault. Ask the owner for the exact combination instead of assuming every participant should use 1.9.1.

Fixes for crashes before the game or overlay opens
Verify the unmodified game first
Run Hogwarts Legacy directly through its supported store. A crash, missing executable or failed launch at this stage points to the base game, its files or its store installation—not Hogwarts MP. Resolve that problem before opening the multiplayer launcher, otherwise every later symptom is ambiguous.
Re-extract every client file together
A partial extraction is a common cause of an immediate launcher failure. Extract the complete archive again into a folder where your Windows account can create and modify files. Check that the launcher, client DLL, updater, Chromium subprocess and runtime files are in the same extracted structure. Running from a compressed archive, a read-only location or a folder where security software removed one file can prevent the overlay from appearing.

Finish updating before starting the game
Open one launcher and wait through its update check and any automatic restart. Do not kill it because the window appears idle, and do not start a second launcher while files are being replaced. After the update completes, launch again from the same permanent folder.
Collect a reproducible crash report
If the crash repeats after those checks, reproduce it once and preserve HogwartsMP.log. Record the client build, approximate time and time zone, and whether the failure occurs every time or only intermittently. Those details distinguish a deterministic missing-file problem from a transient update or overlay failure.
When the server rejects the client, never finishes joining, or is missing
“Server rejects client”
Read the server’s advertised game version, Hogwarts MP build and release channel, then select the matching client. Do not assume that “latest” means compatible: an owner may intentionally keep an older server release while testing a world. Ask whether a password or specific game mods are required, and verify both before retrying.
Infinite loading or a failed handshake
An endless join can indicate a release mismatch, an unreachable endpoint or a resource synchronization failure. Confirm the owner’s address and port, then try Direct Connect. The default game port is UDP 27015; a non-default port must be supplied exactly as advertised. If the client was downloading resources when it stalled, restart the client once and attempt the connection again. Do not manually add folders copied from the server.

The server does not appear in the browser
Browser visibility is not proof that the world is offline. Request the direct-connect address and UDP port from the owner. A server can accept direct connections while its listing is delayed, filtered or unavailable. If Direct Connect also fails, have the owner confirm that the dedicated server is running the same release channel and that the game port is reachable from the Internet.
Password and required-content checks
A correct endpoint still fails when a password is wrong or a required mod is missing. Obtain the current password and required-content list from the owner rather than downloading random files. During the handshake, Hogwarts MP should reconcile supported CurseForge requirements; an error should be reported with the server name and client log.
Understanding the network ports
The normal player needs the owner’s address and game port, not access to the server’s administration interfaces. Hogwarts MP uses UDP 27015 by default for game traffic. If an owner deliberately changes that value, the changed UDP port must be supplied in Direct Connect and made reachable by the host. The hosting documentation identifies TCP 27016 as an information API; it should remain private unless the owner intentionally protects and exposes it.
This distinction helps explain contradictory reports: a server can answer an information request yet reject gameplay traffic, or it can be playable by direct address while absent from the browser. Ask the owner to verify the advertised UDP endpoint and release before changing local files. Do not publish passwords, private addresses or API credentials in a public support post.

Hogwarts MP can deliver client-side scripts and resources during connection. Supported CurseForge requirements are checked and reconciled as part of that handshake. This is why manually copying a server resource tree into the client folder is counterproductive: it can introduce stale files and create a second mismatch.
If loading fails immediately after a resource download, restart the client once and try the same server again. If the failure repeats, retain the client log and identify the server. A required mod that fails to activate can also be caused by a conflicting manual game mod; remove or disable that content only after confirming with the server owner what the world expects.
Release changes that affect mod synchronization

These fixes are part of the project’s release history, not a guarantee that every third-party mod will install. The server owner must still run the matching release and channel.

Desync, missing players and inconsistent world state
Treat desync first as a compatibility and synchronization problem. Confirm that every participant uses the server’s exact game version, client build and release channel. Remove conflicting manual mods, and let server-delivered resources reconcile during the connection handshake.

If one player sees a different world state, note whether the discrepancy appears after joining, after a resource update or after a particular action; then report a reproducible case with logs rather than repeatedly reconnecting with different files.

Public server or your own host?
You can troubleshoot as a player without buying hosting. A public server is the quickest option, but you depend on its owner for the release channel, required CurseForge content, password and uptime. Running your own dedicated server gives you control over those choices but adds operating work.

The FAQ lists 32 players by default and configuration up to 128. Maximum capacity is a setting, not a promise that every world or connection will perform identically. Hosting requirements apply to the operator; a normal player does not need to install MySQL or expose TCP 27016.
What server owners should verify
Hosting has requirements that ordinary players do not need to purchase or configure. The dedicated-server bundle supports Windows x64 and Linux x86-64. Keep the server release and channel aligned with the clients you intend to admit.

When a player reports rejection or desync, verify the advertised release and channel before changing firewall rules. A reachable but incompatible server produces the same practical result as an offline one from the player’s perspective.

- The server name and whether the issue repeats.
- Numbered reproduction steps, including the last screen or progress stage reached.
- The complete

Remove private addresses, passwords, authentication tokens and other players’ personal information before sharing a log. Do not edit out the lines around the failure unless you also keep an unmodified copy; context often shows whether the problem occurred during launch, endpoint discovery, resource download or mod activation.

Limits to keep in mind
Hogwarts MP is still pre-release software. There are no published independent crash-rate or desync-rate statistics, so a single successful connection does not establish reliability for every server configuration. Shared campaign progression remains under research, and compatibility can change between releases. When a clean base game, complete client, matching channel and reachable endpoint still fail, preserve the logs and report the exact conditions instead of repeatedly altering the installation.

Why does Hogwarts MP crash on launch?

How do I fix a CurseForge or mod-sync error?
Update through the launcher and let the synchronization relaunch complete. Release 1.8.2 retries failed installs and displays CurseForge errors, while 1.8.1 stages downloaded mods and rejoins the selected server. Remove conflicting manual game mods only with the owner’s guidance.
Why are players desynced or invisible?
Match the base game version, Hogwarts MP build and release channel for everyone. Remove conflicting manual mods and allow server-delivered resources to finish synchronizing. If the issue remains, record the exact reproduction and provide logs; replication improvements do not guarantee a universal fix.
Can Hogwarts MP run a cooperative story campaign?

How many players can a server support?
