Hoagie, sub, and hero usually describe the same basic food: a sandwich built in a long roll, commonly filled with meat, cheese, vegetables, and condiments. The clearest difference is the name people use in different places, not a universally fixed recipe.
Hoagie is most strongly associated with Philadelphia and nearby Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Hero is closely associated with New York City and Northern New Jersey. Sub is the broadest term and is widely understood across the United States. Local shops may apply additional rules, but no reliable authority establishes one ingredient or preparation standard that separates every hoagie from every sub or hero.
The short answer: mostly regional vocabulary
If you order a hoagie in Philadelphia, a hero in New York City, or a sub in much of the United States, you will generally be asking for the same broad category of sandwich: fillings inside a long, split roll. The naming difference is primarily geographic and cultural.

That does not mean every version is identical. A neighborhood deli can define its own menu terms, bread, toppings, or cooking methods. One shop may call a toasted sandwich a grinder, another may call a similar item a sub, and a Philadelphia counter may use hoagie for a cold, made-to-order sandwich. Those local conventions matter when you are ordering, but they should not be mistaken for national rules.

What all three sandwiches have in common
The shared format is simple: a long roll is opened and filled with one or more substantial ingredients. Typical fillings include sliced or cooked meats, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, peppers, pickles, oil, vinegar, mayonnaise, mustard, or other sauces. The sandwich may be assembled cold, warmed, or toasted, depending on the shop and the particular menu item.
The Associated Press describes the category broadly as an overstuffed sandwich on a roll with layers of meats, cheese, and condiments. That description explains why people from different regions can recognize the same food even when they use different names. It describes a form and eating experience rather than a legally defined recipe.
Visit Philadelphia uses a more local description, calling the hoagie a “built-to-order cold sandwich” akin to what people outside Philadelphia typically call a “sub” or “hero.” That is a useful explanation of Philadelphia usage, but it is not proof that every hoagie everywhere must be cold. Menus and family traditions can use the word more broadly.

| Term | Strongest association | How to understand it |
|---|---|---|
| Hoagie | Philadelphia and nearby Pennsylvania and New Jersey | The locally resonant Philadelphia-area name for this long-roll sandwich; it is also used beyond the region. |
| Hero | New York City and Northern New Jersey | A regional name strongly tied to the New York area, without an exclusive geographic boundary. |
| Sub | Broad United States usage | The most widely understood general term and the one commonly used outside the strongest hoagie and hero regions. |
These are tendencies, not a measured dialect map. The available reference works identify regional associations, but they do not establish exact borders, universal usage inside each state, or current percentages of speakers who prefer one term. A person in New Jersey may use hoagie, sub, hero, or another local word depending on family, town, restaurant, and personal habit.
Is a hoagie always cold?
No universal rule says that a hoagie must be cold. Philadelphia descriptions often emphasize a cold, built-to-order sandwich, and many classic deli hoagies are served that way. However, the wider category includes heated and toasted preparations in different regions and on different menus.

The same caution applies to subs and heroes. A restaurant may sell a cold turkey sandwich, a toasted meatball sandwich, and a hot cheesesteak-style sandwich under a menu heading such as “subs” or “heroes.” The label alone does not tell you whether the roll will be toasted. Read the item description or ask the counter staff if temperature matters to you.
Do the ingredients distinguish a hoagie from a sub or hero?
Not consistently. You may encounter local expectations about the roll, slicing style, salad toppings, dressing, or meat combinations, but no source establishes a universal ingredient formula that separates all hoagies from all subs and heroes.

Bread
All three names normally imply a long roll, but the bread can vary from a soft white roll to a crustier Italian-style loaf. Length, diameter, sesame seeds, interior crumb, and whether the roll is split from the top or side are shop-level choices. Bread style can be an important part of a local sandwich identity without defining the word nationally.
Meat and cheese
Cold cuts such as ham, salami, capocollo, turkey, or roast beef are common. Provolone, American, mozzarella, and other cheeses also appear frequently. Hot fillings such as meatballs, chicken cutlets, or sausage may be offered under the same regional label. A sandwich called a hero in one restaurant can therefore resemble a sandwich called a hoagie in another.
Vegetables and condiments
Lettuce, tomato, onion, peppers, pickles, oil, vinegar, mayonnaise, mustard, and oregano are familiar additions, but customers can usually customize them. “Everything” may mean different toppings at different counters. If you have a strong preference, specify ingredients rather than relying on the name to communicate a recipe.

Why people argue about the “right” word
Food names carry regional identity. In Philadelphia, hoagie is part of the city’s everyday vocabulary and food culture. In New York City and Northern New Jersey, hero is a familiar local term. Elsewhere, sub is often the default word because it is broadly recognized in national menus and conversation.

The disagreement can feel significant because regional words signal where someone grew up, which restaurants they know, and which traditions they consider authentic. It does not create a reliable ingredient boundary.
Context also changes the choice. A national chain, airport menu, or workplace cafeteria may use sub because customers from many regions understand it. A neighborhood deli may choose hoagie or hero to signal its local style. A person can use more than one term without contradicting themselves.
Where “hoagie” came from: what is known and what is not
The exact origin of the word hoagie remains uncertain. The Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia says accounts vary, and the Delaware River Basin Commission summarizes the situation by saying that the origin may never be known. Several explanations circulate, but the evidence does not establish one definitive etymology.
The Hog Island story
One popular tradition connects the name with Hog Island, a former Philadelphia-area site, and workers who supposedly ate large sandwiches. This story is widely repeated, but it should be treated as a disputed tradition rather than settled history. It is not appropriate to present it as the proven source of the word.

Evidence from a 1950 letter
The Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia recounts a 1950 letter to The New York Times from a visitor to Philadelphia. The writer explained that a sandwich called a grinder in other places was known locally by several spellings, including hoagie, hoggy, horgy, and hogy. The variations show that the term was in circulation, but they do not resolve how it began.
The 1967 common-usage date
According to the Oxford English Dictionary account reported by the Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia, the word did not enter common usage until 1967. That date should be understood as a statement about documented common usage in the cited account, not as the moment the sandwich itself was invented. People may have eaten similar sandwiches earlier while using other names or spellings.
How to order without getting the wrong sandwich
The safest strategy is to combine the regional name with the details you want. Names are useful shorthand, but the item description and your instructions determine what you receive.
- Look at the menu description. Check whether the sandwich is listed as cold, toasted, baked, or hot. Do not infer temperature from hoagie, sub, or hero alone.
- Choose the size. Long-roll sandwiches are often sold in multiple lengths. Menus may use inches, half-and-full sizes, or local labels. If the menu is unclear, ask how many servings each size provides.
- Name the main filling. Say “turkey and provolone,” “Italian cold cuts,” or “meatball” rather than ordering only a generic term.
- Specify toppings. Ask for lettuce, tomato, onion, peppers, pickles, oil and vinegar, mayonnaise, mustard, or no toppings as needed. “Everything” is not standardized.
- Confirm heating. For a cold sandwich, say so. For a toasted or hot version, ask whether the entire sandwich or only the roll will be heated.
- Repeat unusual dietary requirements. Ask about ingredients in sauces, shared preparation surfaces, and cross-contact if you have an allergy or other medical restriction.
What about “grinder” and other names?
Grinder is another regional word for a long-roll sandwich. The 1950 letter described above specifically compared a sandwich called a grinder elsewhere with Philadelphia spellings of hoagie. That historical comparison shows overlap among regional labels; it does not create a universal rule that grinders must be toasted or contain a particular filling.
Other communities use additional names, and individual restaurants may invent menu categories of their own. Treat those labels as clues to local convention. If you are unfamiliar with a term, ask what bread, fillings, and preparation it describes.

Common misconceptions
“A sub is the generic version, while a hoagie has a special recipe.”
Sub is broadly used, but the evidence does not support a fixed recipe that makes every hoagie different. Regional practice can produce recognizable styles, yet the category overlap is substantial.
“A hero must be a hot sandwich.”
Many New York-area menus offer hot heroes, which may explain the association, but hero is a regional name rather than a guaranteed temperature instruction. Read the menu.
“The spelling proves the origin.”
Historical spellings such as hoagie, hoggy, horgy, and hogy document variation. They do not, by themselves, prove which proposed etymology came first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“There is a precise border where one word stops and another starts.”
Usage does not follow a single surveyed boundary. Neighboring communities can prefer different terms, and individuals may switch terms depending on audience or restaurant.
A practical decision guide
| If you are… | Most useful wording | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ordering in Philadelphia or nearby Pennsylvania | Use the shop’s term, often “hoagie,” plus your fillings and toppings. | Hoagie is the strongest local association, but the menu controls the exact preparation. |
| Ordering in New York City or Northern New Jersey | Use the shop’s term, often “hero,” and specify hot or cold. | Hero is locally familiar, while temperature and ingredients vary by item. |
| Speaking to a mixed or national audience | “Sub” is usually the clearest general term. | It is broadly understood across the United States. |
| Using an unfamiliar deli menu | Ask what the named sandwich contains and whether it is toasted. | Local labels can carry shop-specific meanings. |
Bottom line
Hoagie, sub, and hero are best understood as overlapping names for a long-roll sandwich. Hoagie points most strongly to Philadelphia and nearby Pennsylvania and New Jersey; hero points to New York City and Northern New Jersey; sub is the broad national term. The words reveal regional vocabulary more reliably than they reveal ingredients, size, or temperature.
The history of hoagie is still unsettled. A 1950 letter records several spellings, and the Oxford English Dictionary account cited by the Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia places common usage in 1967, but neither resolves the deeper origin. When ordering, rely on the menu description and state the fillings, toppings, and heating instructions you want.
