Choose HITMAN World of Assassination if you want compact, highly authored assassination puzzles built around disguises, routines and social manipulation. Choose Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain if you want large military sandboxes where reconnaissance, equipment, companions and enemy reactions shape every infiltration.
Neither game is simply “the better stealth game.” They pursue different fantasies: Hitman asks you to understand a place and engineer a perfect kill, while MGSV asks you to infiltrate hostile territory and adapt when your plan changes. The right choice depends on whether you prefer repeated mastery of dense locations or tactical freedom across open battlefields.

What each game is trying to make you feel
Hitman is a social assassination puzzle
HITMAN World of Assassination puts Agent 47 into carefully constructed locations where the challenge is not merely reaching a target. You study a target’s routine, learn which areas are public or restricted, acquire a suitable disguise and manipulate people or objects until an opportunity appears. A fashion show, a luxury skyscraper or a motorsport event is both scenery and a system of rules to exploit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe game’s spaces are compact compared with MGSV’s battlefields, but they are unusually dense. A single location can contain staff corridors, maintenance routes, public attractions, security checkpoints, disguises, overheard conversations and several ways to turn an ordinary object into a killing method. The pleasure comes from understanding how these elements connect, then executing a plan that looks accidental to everyone else.

MGSV is a military infiltration sandbox
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain begins from a different premise. You approach an enemy outpost, settlement or communications site, observe it from a distance and decide how to penetrate or bypass it. You can crawl through terrain, mark soldiers, use CQC, deploy weapons and gadgets, drive vehicles, call support and extract personnel or equipment.
Konami describes the game as taking place in “huge open-world environments” with realistic weather and day/night cycles. Those conditions are not merely visual decoration: visibility, patrol behavior and the timing of an operation can change as a mission unfolds. The result is a stealth game about maintaining options. If a guard discovers you, you can relocate, create a diversion, call a buddy, use a different route or escalate temporarily and then disappear.
Package scope: what you actually get
HITMAN World of Assassination
PlayStation says HITMAN World of Assassination brings together the main campaigns from Hitman, Hitman 2 and Hitman 3 in one interface. The package also includes Contracts mode, Escalations, the Elusive Target Arcade and Hitman: Freelancer. PlayStation describes the collection as covering more than 20 locations.
That scope matters because the trilogy’s locations are designed to remain useful after their story missions are complete. You can return to the same map for challenges, alternate starting points, different disguises and new assassination methods rather than treating each level as a one-time corridor.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience
Konami identifies Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience as the complete MGSV collection containing The Phantom Pain, Ground Zeroes and all downloadable content. It is the most straightforward way to obtain the connected MGSV package on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, subject to the edition and region sold to you.
Ground Zeroes functions as a shorter introduction to MGSV’s controls, scouting and extraction systems, while The Phantom Pain supplies the large campaign, open-world operations and Mother Base progression. Buying an edition that omits Ground Zeroes or downloadable content can leave you with a less complete package, so check the exact contents of the listing rather than relying on the word “complete.”
How stealth works in each game
Disguises and social rules in Hitman
Hitman’s central stealth mechanic is identity. A disguise lets Agent 47 enter spaces that would otherwise be inaccessible, but disguises have rules. Some characters can recognize you, certain areas remain restricted even in a valid uniform and suspicious actions can expose you. You therefore read the social hierarchy of a location as carefully as its physical layout.

Information is another tool. Eavesdropping can reveal a target’s next appointment, a staff member’s problem or a prop that creates a special opportunity. Once you know the routine, you can decide whether to follow the intended setup or improvise. Poison, accidents, concealed weapons, environmental hazards and staged distractions all support different levels of risk and theatricality.

Reconnaissance and equipment in MGSV
MGSV’s stealth is based on information, positioning and tools rather than blending into civilian life. You survey a base, mark threats and identify entrances before committing yourself. Movement speed, stance, cover and sightlines determine whether you remain undetected. CQC allows close-range control, while equipment gives you alternatives when a patrol blocks the obvious route.
Companions add another layer. A buddy can provide reconnaissance, distraction, transport or combat assistance, changing the shape of an operation. Vehicles and support calls also make the battlefield more flexible than a single-character infiltration game. The trade-off is cognitive load: you have more options to manage, and a mission can become a long improvisation rather than a tightly authored puzzle.
Enemy adaptation
Konami lists improved enemy AI among MGSV’s features. The game can respond to repeated habits by introducing countermeasures, encouraging you to vary equipment and methods. This creates pressure to avoid relying permanently on one dominant tactic.
Hitman’s opposition is more local and contextual. Security reacts to trespassing, suspicious behavior, discovered bodies and compromised disguises within the current location. Its challenge comes from learning the map’s rules and predicting how one action will affect nearby routines, not from a global arms race against an adapting military.
Level design and freedom
Why Hitman’s smaller maps feel deep
Each Hitman destination is built like a miniature world. The map may be geographically limited, yet it supports multiple vertical layers, public and private zones, service routes and controlled access points. A target’s schedule intersects with those layers, creating timing puzzles: you may need to gain a particular disguise, isolate the target, obtain a tool and reach a safe exit without breaking cover.
Because the locations are authored, the designers can place meaningful interactions close together. A single mission can support a silent accident, a disguised approach, a long-range shot, a staged “opportunity” and a route that uses no disguise at all. Repetition reveals new connections rather than simply adding more enemies.
Why MGSV’s battlefields feel expansive
MGSV gives you greater physical freedom. You can approach a target from different directions, cross open terrain, travel between outposts and use the environment as a tactical resource. Weather and the day/night cycle change visibility and timing, while the open-world layout lets you disengage and re-enter from another angle.

It also means that travel and preparation can occupy more time. If you want every minute to present a bespoke puzzle, Hitman is more concentrated; if you enjoy choosing your own route across a living combat zone, MGSV has the advantage.

Replayability and progression
Hitman: mastery of a place
PlayStation says that mastering missions awards XP used to unlock new suits, weapons, items and gadgets. The progression system reinforces the game’s central loop: learn a location, complete challenges, unlock a new starting point or tool, then return with more knowledge and flexibility.
Replayability is therefore deliberate and location-focused. You might replay a map to test a different disguise, complete a challenge requiring a particular accident, start closer to the target, or attempt a run with strict restrictions. Freelancer adds a more variable structure by asking you to plan a series of assignments and manage the consequences of failure, while the underlying locations remain familiar enough to reward expertise.
MGSV: growth through Mother Base
Konami describes Mother Base as an expanded offshore headquarters that you customize with liberated items and personnel. Recovered resources and recruited staff are then used to develop weapons, equipment and support systems. Field operations consequently feed into a broader strategic loop.

Better equipment, specialist staff and expanded facilities can open new approaches, but development consumes resources and time. You are not only solving the current infiltration; you are deciding what kind of force you want to build. That long-term structure is a major reason to choose MGSV over a purely mission-based stealth game.
Story, pacing and campaign structure
Hitman’s anthology pacing
Hitman presents a globe-trotting spy-thriller through individual assignments. Each destination has its own cast, atmosphere and operational problem, so the campaign naturally alternates between locations rather than maintaining one continuous battlefield. The episodic feeling suits players who prefer self-contained scenarios that can be revisited at any time.
The narrative is also subordinate to experimentation. You can follow the intended story opportunity, but the game does not require one canonical solution. If you care more about discovering how a place works than watching a linear plot advance, this structure is an advantage.
MGSV’s longer revenge narrative
The Phantom Pain follows a sustained military narrative centered on revenge, command and the consequences of building a private force. Missions are connected by operations, character arcs and Mother Base development, giving the campaign a stronger sense of continuation.
The pacing is less compact than Hitman’s. Travel, preparation, resource management and optional tasks can sit between major story beats. Players who enjoy a long progression loop and a campaign that grows around their organization will find that structure rewarding; players seeking quick, sharply bounded assassination scenarios may find it diffuse.

Which game has better stealth gameplay?
Hitman has the better stealth gameplay if “better” means richer social manipulation and more carefully authored assassination puzzles. Its disguises, target routines and layered locations make every run a process of observation, hypothesis and execution. The same map becomes more interesting as you understand it.
MGSV has the better stealth gameplay if “better” means freedom of movement, tactical improvisation and systemic reactions. Its reconnaissance, CQC, equipment, companions, vehicles, weather and open terrain let you solve an infiltration in many unplanned ways. You are less likely to feel that the designers are steering you toward one dramatic setup.
In short, Hitman is a puzzle box; MGSV is a toolkit. The first rewards precision and knowledge of authored spaces. The second rewards adaptation when your plan collides with a responsive battlefield.

Which game is more replayable?
Hitman is usually more replayable for players who enjoy mastering the same location. More than 20 destinations, challenge lists, alternate opportunities, unlockable equipment and Freelancer’s contracts give you reasons to revisit a map you already know. The core question changes from “Can I finish this mission?” to “How many different ways can I control this situation?”
MGSV is more replayable for players who want emergent variation. The same outpost can feel different when approached at night, during poor weather, with another buddy, using a newly developed device or after enemy forces have adapted to previous tactics. Its replayability comes from changing your method and the battlefield’s response rather than from solving a fixed set of assassination scenarios.
Open-world stealth: MGSV’s advantage and cost
If open-world stealth is your priority, MGSV is the clear choice. Its connected environments, vehicles, changing weather and day/night cycles create a sense of physical distance and operational planning that Hitman does not try to replicate.
The cost is concentration. Open terrain can mean longer approaches, more travel and less predictable pacing. Hitman offers fewer miles to cross but more authored interactions per minute. Choosing between them is therefore not a question of which game has the larger map; it is whether you value geographic freedom or interaction density.
