Choose Hillthorn if you want a dark, wordless investigation built around clue cards, social inference and a clock that forces you to abandon some leads. Choose Jusant if you want hands-on climbing, route-finding, environmental storytelling and a slower, meditative ascent. They share mountain imagery and an exploratory mood, but they are fundamentally different games: Hillthorn uses a mountain community as the setting for a mystery, while Jusant makes the mountain itself the main challenge and destination.
At a glance: two very different mountain games
The similar settings can make Hillthorn and Jusant look like alternatives in the same genre. They are not. Your choice depends first on whether you want to interpret evidence or physically traverse a landscape.
| Decision point | Hillthorn | Jusant |
|---|---|---|
| Core activity | Card-based investigation, deduction and social inference | Climbing, route selection and environmental exploration |
| Story delivery | Wordless clue cards, local interactions and the order in which you pursue leads | Environmental clues, exploration and the Ballast companion’s ability to awaken nature |
| Pacing | Deliberate investigation constrained by a limited clock | Relaxed and meditative, with stamina management during climbs |
| Role of the mountain | A secluded community hiding a disappearance | The central traversal space, divided into changing biomes |
| Best fit | Mystery, deduction, replayable decisions and nonverbal storytelling | Exploration, tactile movement, atmosphere and low- or non-combat adventure |
| Current availability evidence | Public Steam demo and wishlist information; a full release date is not stated in the announcement | PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; available through Xbox Game Pass at launch |
What Hillthorn actually is
Raw Fury announced Hillthorn on July 9, 2026 as a dark, card-based investigation game from developer Fool Moon. The premise is a missing child in a secretive mountain community. You play an outsider trying to understand what happened, but the game does not present the case as a conventional dialogue-heavy detective adventure. Major story information appears through clue cards that you can investigate, explore and, in some situations, communicate with.

The cards are therefore more than an inventory of evidence. They are the language through which the community, its locations and its contradictions become legible. The announcement describes a mystery “without a single word spoken,” so the meaning of an encounter depends on the visual and contextual information you connect rather than on voiced exposition. That makes observation and interpretation central skills.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The investigation loop
- Gather a lead. Encounters and discoveries add cards to the case, giving you another person, place, object or idea to examine.
- Inspect and manipulate evidence. Investigating cards lets you look for relationships and implications instead of simply checking off a quest marker.
- Read the community. As an outsider, you must infer what local people know, conceal or misunderstand from the information the game presents.
- Choose which thread to pursue. The case contains more possibilities than the available time allows, so following one lead means leaving another for later or losing it entirely.
- Form a conclusion. Logic and intuition work together: a mechanically possible connection is not automatically the correct interpretation of the community’s behavior.
Why the clock matters
Hillthorn’s time limit is not simply a countdown added for tension. It changes the value of information. You cannot exhaustively investigate every card in one run, which creates a strategic question whenever a new lead appears: is this the thread most likely to reveal the truth, or merely the most immediately interesting one? Players who enjoy replaying a case and making a different set of trade-offs should find that structure more rewarding than a linear checklist.
The clock also means Hillthorn is not a purely contemplative mystery. Its pace is deliberate while you examine evidence, but the pressure to allocate limited opportunities keeps the investigation moving. If you prefer to inspect every object without consequence, Jusant’s open-ended traversal is the safer choice.
Demo status and ongoing changes
The official Steam Community page documents a public Hillthorn demo and updates to that demo. Those updates include revised cinematics, a card-zoom function, clearer feedback when you choose a wrong path, and interface and audio fixes. They show that the playable version is still being refined. The July 2026 announcement does not provide a full-release date, so the demo should be treated as the currently documented way to try the game rather than evidence of a fixed launch schedule.

DON’T NOD describes Jusant as an action-puzzle climbing game and a meditative journey to the top of an immeasurably tall tower. The objective is literal: learn the climbing tools, manage your stamina and select viable routes as you ascend. The tower is not a single repeated wall. Its environments change as you climb, including arid, windy slopes and bioluminescent tunnels.
Jusant tells its story through the spaces you cross and the traces of a vanished civilization that you discover there. Instead of asking you to assemble a deck of clues, it asks you to notice what a place reveals through its architecture, abandoned evidence and ecological changes. The Ballast, a water-based companion, can awaken nature and help uncover clues that would otherwise remain hidden.

The climbing loop
- Read the route. Examine the wall and surrounding space to decide where a safe or efficient line might be.
- Use your climbing tools. Movement is built around deliberate handholds, jumps, rappels and other climbing actions rather than a simple forward walk.
- Watch stamina. Your stamina meter limits how long you can remain on a route, so stopping at a ledge or choosing a shorter line can be more important than speed.
- Explore side paths. Detours can contain environmental clues and discoveries about the civilization that once occupied the tower.
- Work with the Ballast. The companion’s nature-awakening ability opens up additional signs and context during the ascent.
Why Jusant feels meditative
Jusant has little emphasis on fighting. Its tension comes from planning movement, conserving stamina and deciding whether a detour is worth the effort. A peaceful atmospheric soundtrack and the changing biomes reinforce the sense of a solitary journey. The game can still require concentration during difficult climbs, but its fundamental rhythm is observation, movement and discovery rather than pursuit or combat.
Core-loop comparison: deduction versus traversal
Both games ask you to make choices about where to go next, but the consequences are different. Hillthorn asks, “Which interpretation or lead deserves my limited attention?” Jusant asks, “Which physical route can I complete with the stamina and tools available?”
| If you value… | Hillthorn provides… | Jusant provides… |
|---|---|---|
| Problem solving | Connecting cards, reading social signals and testing hypotheses | Finding handholds, planning routes and managing movement resources |
| Exploration | Exploring a community’s secrets through evidence and interactions | Traversing a huge tower and its changing ecosystems |
| Replay value | Different lead priorities under the limited clock | Optional routes and environmental discoveries during the ascent |
| Immediate feedback | Wrong-path feedback in the updated demo helps you understand a failed investigative choice | Stamina, position and route continuity show whether a climb is working |
| Atmosphere | Haunting secrecy and outsider tension | Quiet landscapes, bioluminescent spaces and a peaceful soundtrack |
Narrative and atmosphere: which kind of story do you want?
Choose Hillthorn for a mystery you interpret
Hillthorn’s story is intentionally wordless. You are not waiting for a character to explain the case; you are building meaning from clue cards and the behavior of people in the community. This approach suits players who like ambiguity, visual symbolism and the satisfaction of spotting a connection before it is confirmed. The outsider perspective adds friction: you may have evidence, but you do not automatically understand the customs or loyalties surrounding it.
The mountain setting supports that mood by isolating the community. It is a place where information can be guarded and where pursuing the wrong person or location has a cost. The game is a fit for players who regard conversation, observation and deduction as the main form of action.
Choose Jusant for a story embedded in place
Jusant’s narrative is discovered while moving through the tower. The vanished civilization is reconstructed from what remains in the environment, and the Ballast’s ability makes natural recovery part of that process. The result is less about identifying a culprit and more about understanding a world that has already changed.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The contrast between dry, windy slopes and glowing underground passages gives the ascent a visual and environmental arc. If you prefer to absorb a setting through sound, scale and gradual revelation, Jusant’s structure is more suitable than a card-driven case.

Hillthorn is best for focused sessions in which you are willing to commit to a theory or lead. The limited clock means indecision is itself a decision: spending too long examining one thread can prevent you from reaching another. That pressure is useful when you enjoy making imperfect plans and learning from a run, but it can feel restrictive if you expect a mystery game to let you see everything before reaching a conclusion.
Jusant offers a calmer baseline. Climbing still demands attention because stamina and route choices matter, yet there is no equivalent documented clock forcing you to abandon story threads. You can pause to look at a landscape, explore an optional path or simply continue upward at your own pace. Choose it when decompression and movement are more appealing than deadline-driven deduction.
Accessibility and control options
The official documentation is much more detailed for Jusant than for Hillthorn. DON’T NOD’s FAQ lists several options that can reduce physical or visual demands:
- No-stamina mode: removes the need to manage the stamina resource during climbs.
- Simplified climbing: reduces the complexity of climbing actions.
- Jump assistance: helps with jumps that would otherwise require precise timing or input.
- Simplified interactions: streamlines contextual actions.
- Rappel modification: changes how rappelling is handled.
- Colorblind filters: provide alternative color presentations.
Jusant supports mouse and keyboard, although its controls were designed with controllers in mind. Players who prefer a gamepad should therefore get the intended control layout, while keyboard-and-mouse users still have an officially documented input option.

The official Hillthorn materials reviewed provide less detail about accessibility settings. That is not evidence that the game lacks them; it means you should check the current demo and its settings menu for the options available on your system before buying or committing time.
Platforms, release context and what you can play now
Hillthorn
Hillthorn’s documented public version is a Steam demo, with wishlist information and continuing demo updates on the official Steam Community page. The July 9, 2026 announcement identifies the game and its developer but does not state a full-release date or a definitive platform list beyond the documented Steam demo context. Treat any other platform or date claim as unconfirmed until the developer publishes it.
Jusant
DON’T NOD’s launch announcement lists PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and says the game was available through Xbox Game Pass at launch. The PlayStation listing records October 31, 2023 as the PS5 release date. Those are launch details; availability of a subscription catalog or store listing can change over time.
Which game should you choose?
Pick Hillthorn when these statements sound like you
- You would rather connect evidence than climb a route.
- You enjoy mysteries that communicate without conventional dialogue.
- You like deciding which leads to sacrifice under a time limit.
- You want an outsider’s view of a secretive community.
- You are comfortable with a demo that is still receiving interface, audio and presentation updates.
Pick Jusant when these statements sound like you
- You want climbing to be the main activity, not a setting for another genre.
- You enjoy choosing routes, managing stamina and mastering movement tools.
- You prefer environmental storytelling to a case-solving structure.
- You want a peaceful soundtrack, changing biomes and a low-combat or non-combat adventure.
- You need documented assistive options such as no-stamina mode, simplified climbing or colorblind filters.
- You want a released game on PC, PS5 or Xbox Series X|S rather than an announced project with a public demo.
Common points of confusion
“Mountain exploration” does not mean the same thing in both games
In Hillthorn, exploration is investigative. You explore cards, relationships and a community’s hidden motives. There is no indication that climbing mechanics are the primary activity. In Jusant, exploration is physical: the tower is a continuous space to read, ascend and revisit through alternate routes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNeither game is presented as a conventional combat adventure
Hillthorn’s documented focus is deduction and social inference. Jusant is described as a climbing and action-puzzle game with a low-combat or non-combat emphasis. If fighting systems, weapons or enemy encounters are your main reason for choosing a mountain game, neither title is documented as a combat-first option.
Best Value

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Do not treat Hillthorn’s demo as a finished product
The Steam page records revisions to cinematics, zoom behavior, wrong-path feedback, interface elements and audio. Those changes are useful context for trying the demo, but they also mean the experience can change before release.
A practical decision checklist before you buy or download
- Start with your preferred verb. If it is “deduce,” begin with Hillthorn; if it is “climb,” begin with Jusant.
- Check your tolerance for pressure. Hillthorn limits how many investigative threads you can pursue. Jusant’s documented challenge is stamina and route management.
- Match the story format. Choose cards and wordless inference for Hillthorn, or environmental traces and a companion-driven discovery process for Jusant.
- Verify platform access. Use the documented Steam demo for Hillthorn. For Jusant, confirm the current PC, PS5 or Xbox Series X|S store listing and any Game Pass availability.
- Review accessibility needs. Jusant publishes a specific set of assistive options. For Hillthorn, inspect the current demo’s settings because the cited official materials do not provide an equivalent list.
- Decide whether you want a testable demo or a released game. Hillthorn can be sampled through its public demo; Jusant is the established 2023 release.
The Jusant artbook and other physical companions
If Jusant’s visual world is what attracts you, DON’T NOD documents an official artbook titled The Art of Jusant. It is described as more than 300 pages with close to 500 illustrations, including character material, storyboards, 3D models, sets and unused research. That makes it a companion for studying the game’s visual development rather than a gameplay guide.
DON’T NOD also documents a Jusant Ballast and Climber plushie and a physical vinyl soundtrack. Availability, stock and purchase terms are not established here, so check the current official or retailer listing before planning a purchase. No comparably documented Hillthorn physical product is identified in the available official material; its currently supported entry point is the digital game and Steam demo.
Final choice
Hillthorn is the better match for a player who wants a haunting, wordless missing-person investigation in which every card and every lead competes for limited time. Jusant is the better match for someone who wants to physically master a climb, select routes through a changing tower and uncover history through atmosphere and environmental clues. If the phrase “mountain exploration” means solving what happened, choose Hillthorn. If it means reaching the summit and seeing what the world reveals along the way, choose Jusant.
