Hillthorn has ten accessibility features listed for its planned release: adjustable text size, color alternatives, camera comfort, custom volume controls, stereo sound, no-quick-time-event play, mouse-only input, touch-only input, save-anytime support, and an at-your-own-pace option. Together they address the main barriers in a card-based investigation game: reading small clue text, distinguishing visual states, tolerating motion or audio, using a preferred input device, and handling timing or interruptions.

Hillthorn is scheduled for November 10, 2026, on Steam, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android. Because that date and the feature list describe a planned release, the final menu names and availability can still change.

What Hillthorn is and why its accessibility settings matter

Hillthorn is an upcoming dark investigation game from Fool Moon and Finnegan Motors, published by Raw Fury. Its missing-person mystery takes place in a secluded mountain community and is presented through clue cards, visual investigation, logic, and intuition rather than spoken dialogue. That format makes reading and visual interpretation central to progress: the cards are not optional flavor text, but the evidence from which you build the case.

A wordless presentation can remove the difficulty of following rapid spoken exchanges, yet it can increase reliance on written text, card layouts, icons, color, and visual effects. Timing and input still matter when you examine evidence or move through an interaction. The documented settings therefore cover several different needs instead of treating accessibility as a single text-size switch.

Hillthorn’s ten documented accessibility features

Area Feature Practical effect Most useful when
Saving Save anytime Lets you preserve progress when you need to stop rather than wait for a checkpoint. Sessions must be short, interrupted, or paced around fatigue.
Visual reading Adjustable text size Changes the size of writing on clue cards and interface labels. Small print, viewing distance, or eye strain makes cards difficult to read.
Visual interpretation Color alternatives Provides alternatives when color alone is difficult to distinguish. You have color-vision differences or low contrast is tiring.
Motion comfort Camera comfort Offers a more comfortable presentation for camera or movement effects. Camera motion causes discomfort, dizziness, or distraction.
Audio Custom volume controls Allows separate adjustment of available sound categories instead of one overall level. Music, effects, or other sounds need different levels.
Audio Stereo sound Provides a stereo-output choice for the way your speakers or headphones deliver sound. You need a simpler left/right listening arrangement or a particular audio setup.
Timing Playable without quick-time events Removes interactions that require a prompt to be hit within a short time. Rapid reactions, hand control, or timing pressure is a barrier.
Input Mouse-only option Supports play using a mouse without requiring a keyboard for the main interaction. A pointing device is easier than keyboard controls.
Input Touch-only option Supports play through touch input without requiring another control method. You are playing on a phone, tablet, or touch-capable device.
Pacing Playable at your own pace Reduces pressure to execute actions quickly while investigating. You need time to reread cards, reason through clues, or take breaks.

Steam lists these ten features for the planned release. The listing does not establish that Hillthorn includes a screen reader, remappable controls, a dedicated high-contrast mode, or subtitle customization beyond the language information it provides. Do not assume those functions are present until the final build documents them.

Recommended setup before investigating

There is no published, final menu path that guarantees where every option will appear. When you first launch the release build, look in its settings or accessibility menu and apply the controls in this order. Starting with the options that affect reading and pressure makes it easier to judge the rest.

  1. Set text size first. Open the text-size control and increase it until a normal viewing position lets you read a full clue card without leaning toward the screen. Check both the card body and small interface labels; a size that works for one may not be comfortable for the other.
  2. Choose color alternatives. Turn this on if you cannot reliably tell colors apart or if colored states fade into the background. Verify the result on an actual investigation card, not only in the menu, because the useful change is how evidence is distinguished during play.
  3. Enable camera comfort when needed. If movement effects feel distracting or uncomfortable, select the camera-comfort setting before beginning a long session. If you are uncertain, test it while moving between screens and examining several cards.
  4. Remove quick-time events. Select the no-QTE option when rapid prompts are difficult, painful, or simply unwelcome. This is separate from the general pacing option: one addresses a specific interaction type, while the other concerns pressure across play.
  5. Pick the input method you can sustain. Use mouse-only on a computer when pointing and clicking are easier than keyboard combinations. Use touch-only on a phone, tablet, or compatible device when direct taps are more comfortable. Keep the method that lets you select cards accurately without overreaching.
  6. Balance audio. Set custom volume controls for the sound categories that are available, then select stereo sound if it matches your headphones or speakers. Keep effects audible if they communicate an interaction, but lower any channel that causes fatigue.
  7. Plan for interruptions. Use save anytime whenever you are about to stop, change activities, or take a break. Pair it with the own-pace option so returning to the case does not create a race to catch up.

Making clue cards easier to read

Increase text without losing the card layout

Adjustable text size is the most direct aid for Hillthorn’s evidence cards. Increase it gradually rather than choosing the largest value immediately. Very large type can improve individual letter recognition but may also show fewer words at once, requiring more scrolling or page changes if the game uses them. Read a card at the distance and brightness you normally use, and check labels outside the card because interface text can remain smaller.

Use color alternatives as a reliability check

Color alternatives are valuable when a clue, status, or selection state depends on hue. After enabling them, inspect cards that contain multiple marked items and any screen that indicates progress or selection. The goal is not merely to make the screen look different; it is to ensure that a decision never depends on a color distinction you cannot confidently perceive. If a symbol, outline, pattern, or other non-color cue appears, use that cue consistently.

Reduce visual fatigue around the cards

Take advantage of the game’s save-anytime design to divide reading into short sessions. A practical routine is to save after recording a useful clue, then stop before eye strain makes the text harder to interpret. Keep the display at a comfortable brightness and sit close enough that you do not have to zoom mentally; Hillthorn’s documented settings can change text size, but they do not promise a separate high-contrast mode.

Removing timing and motion barriers

When to disable quick-time events

The no-quick-time-event mode is intended for interactions that demand a response within a short window. Turn it on if you have a motor condition, use an alternative controller, need more processing time, or prefer a deliberative investigation. It also prevents a missed prompt from becoming an avoidable source of stress. Because the game is still in development, check the release build’s description to see whether every event is converted automatically or whether a small number of interactions use another slower form.

Use the own-pace option for reasoning, not only reaction speed

Playing at your own pace addresses sustained pressure rather than one prompt. It gives you room to reread a card, compare two pieces of evidence, or pause while deciding what a clue means. This is particularly relevant to Hillthorn because its mystery is designed around logic and intuition. If you need both accommodations, enable own-pace play and no-QTE play; neither setting makes the other redundant.

Choose camera comfort before symptoms start

Camera comfort is the appropriate first adjustment when movement or presentation effects cause nausea, dizziness, headaches, or visual overload. Test it in a safe part of the game, then stop if discomfort begins rather than trying to push through. The available documentation names the option but does not specify which effects it changes, so observe whether transitions, movement, or other camera behavior becomes easier in your own setup.

Choosing mouse, touch, and other controls

Mouse-only play

Mouse-only support can simplify a desktop setup for players who find keyboard input difficult or who prefer a pointing device for card selection. Place the mouse where your wrist and shoulder can remain relaxed, and adjust sensitivity in the operating system if small movements are hard to control. The feature is documented as a play option, but the sources do not promise that every menu or system-level function can be operated without a keyboard.

Touch-only play

Touch-only support is suited to the planned iOS and Android versions and to touch-capable computers or tablets. Tap targets should be checked at the text size you selected: enlarging text may change how much of a card is visible, while a small target can remain difficult even when the words are readable. A stand or stable grip can reduce the need to hold a device in the air during a long investigation.

What is not confirmed about controllers

The current feature list specifically names mouse-only and touch-only play. It does not state that controller support, one-handed controller layouts, or fully remappable controls will ship. The earlier prototype listed keyboard and mouse input, but prototype controls are development evidence, not a final promise. Confirm the supported devices on the store listing for your platform after release.

Making audio comfortable

Custom volume controls

Custom volume controls let you balance available sound categories instead of accepting one shared level. Start with a low master level, raise the category that carries useful feedback, and lower music or effects that compete with concentration. Since the mystery has no spoken dialogue, you should not need to maximize volume to follow character speech; prioritise comfort and any sound that helps you notice an interaction.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Stereo sound

Stereo sound is a presentation choice, not a promise of surround or spatial-audio support. Select the mode that matches your headphones or speakers and test it with both channels working. If one ear is more sensitive or your listening setup is unusual, use the custom volume controls to keep the overall output comfortable. The documentation does not describe a mono option, so do not assume one is available.

Saving, stopping, and returning to the case

Save anytime is especially important for an investigation built from written evidence. Save before ending a session, after a meaningful deduction, and before experimenting with an uncertain choice. This creates a recovery point if you misread a card or need to stop unexpectedly. The feature is documented as an accessibility option; the release notes should clarify whether there are any exceptional screens where saving is temporarily unavailable.

Combine saving with your own-pace setting rather than treating them as substitutes. Saving protects progress across interruptions, while own-pace play reduces pressure during the session itself. A short cycle—read a card, make a note, save, and take a break—can be more sustainable than attempting to complete a whole case in one sitting.

Prototype features versus release guarantees

An earlier Hillthorn prototype listed color-blind-friendly presentation, an interactive tutorial, and one-button accessibility support, along with keyboard and mouse input. Those entries show that the developers explored additional accommodations, but the page identifies the build as a prototype. They should not be treated as guarantees that the same labels, tutorial behavior, or one-button scheme will appear unchanged in the November 2026 release.

For a purchase or download decision, rely on the current platform listing and the final in-game settings. The planned release date and feature descriptions can change before launch, so recheck them for the platform you intend to use.

What the documented list does—and does not—tell you

The ten listed features cover visual readability, color interpretation, camera comfort, audio levels, stereo output, timing, input method, pacing, and interruption tolerance. That is a broad set for a card-focused game, but it is not a complete accessibility audit. The available information does not establish screen-reader compatibility, narrated card text, keyboard remapping, a high-contrast mode, subtitle controls beyond the published language information, or detailed support for controllers and alternative switches.

If one of those capabilities is essential, look for an explicit statement from the developer or platform listing before relying on it. A wordless game may reduce the need for dialogue subtitles, yet it can still require a player to read every clue. Text-to-speech or screen-reader behavior therefore cannot be inferred from the absence of spoken dialogue.

Using accessibility as a comparison checklist

When you compare Hillthorn with another mystery game, evaluate the same five dimensions rather than counting settings. First, check visual readability: adjustable text and color alternatives determine whether evidence can be read and distinguished. Second, check timing pressure: no-QTE and own-pace options reveal whether the game permits deliberate play. Third, examine input flexibility: mouse-only and touch-only support may fit your device better than a controller-only design. Fourth, review audio control: custom volume and stereo options affect comfort and usable feedback. Finally, check interruption tolerance: save-anytime support matters if sessions must stop without warning.

This framework also helps identify gaps. A game may offer large text but no way to pause a timed sequence, or support touch input while requiring tiny targets. Hillthorn’s documented options address several of those combinations, but its final implementation and any additional controls should be verified at launch.

Release timing and how to verify the final settings

Raw Fury’s official community announcement gives November 10, 2026 as the planned release date for Steam, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android, while the Steam listing identifies the same month as planned timing. Until the game ships, treat both the date and the settings as subject to change. On launch, open the platform’s current feature description, then inspect the in-game accessibility menu before starting the investigation. Confirm that the options you need are present on your device and that the text, input, and pacing behavior match their labels.

If a setting appears to be missing, first confirm that the game is updated and that you are checking the full settings menu rather than only a pause overlay. If the behavior does not match the description, record the platform and version and contact the publisher through its current support channel; platform-specific builds can expose different controls.
