Yes. High-speed sync (HSS) can work while your camera is in Manual exposure mode, as long as your camera and flash support HSS together. Camera Manual mode controls settings such as shutter speed and aperture; it does not require you to set flash output manually.
What “Manual mode” means for HSS
There are two separate controls that are easy to confuse:
- Camera exposure mode M: You choose the shutter speed and aperture yourself. HSS can operate in this mode on a compatible camera-and-flash pairing.
- Manual flash power: You choose the flash’s output rather than relying on automatic flash metering such as TTL. Whether manual flash power works with HSS depends on the specific equipment and its supported features.
So, using HSS in camera Manual mode does not by itself mean you must use manual flash power. Check both device manuals to confirm the flash-control options supported by your exact combination. Nikon describes HSS use with manual camera exposure, but that does not establish that every camera and flash supports every flash-control mode. Nikon’s HSS guide and its still-life flash guide explain the feature and advise checking compatibility.

Why use HSS?
With a focal-plane shutter, the shutter curtains travel across the sensor. Above the camera’s normal flash-sync speed, the sensor is exposed through a moving slit rather than all at once. A conventional brief flash burst may not illuminate the entire frame evenly. HSS addresses this by producing a rapid series of pulses while the curtains travel, allowing flash to be used at shutter speeds above the normal sync speed. Nikon explains the pulse method and HSS use.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is useful when you want flash while keeping a wide aperture in bright conditions, adding fill light outdoors, or choosing a faster shutter speed to control ambient exposure. HSS is not a universal permission to use any shutter speed: the camera, flash, and their pairing determine the supported range.
How to set up HSS with camera exposure mode M
- Verify compatibility. Look up HSS, FP, or Auto FP support in the manuals for both the camera and flash. Confirm that the specific pairing supports the feature; names and controls differ by system.
- Enable the sync feature. Turn on the relevant HSS/FP setting in the camera or flash controls, as the system requires. Nikon’s instructions, for example, describe enabling Auto FP through camera custom settings; those menu steps should not be assumed to apply to other brands or models.
- Choose camera exposure settings. Set the camera to M and select the shutter speed and aperture for the intended ambient exposure. Use a shutter speed above normal sync only when HSS is active and supported.
- Set flash exposure. Choose a supported TTL or manual flash-control mode. Do not assume that support for HSS guarantees support for every flash-control mode.
- Take a test frame and adjust. If the flash contribution is too weak, move the flash closer, add compatible flash units if available, or use a slower shutter speed if the image allows.
What changes as shutter speed rises?
HSS reduces effective flash output because the flash must keep illuminating the sensor throughout the shutter-curtain travel. As shutter speed increases, available flash power and practical working distance decrease. Nikon’s guidance recommends not using a faster shutter speed than needed because doing so makes the Speedlight work harder and reduces its effective range. Nikon’s still-life guide discusses this trade-off.

If the subject is too far away or the flash cannot provide enough light at the chosen speed, try moving the flash closer or lowering the shutter speed while preserving the exposure effect you need. HSS trades flash reach for the flexibility of faster shutter speeds; it does not preserve the flash’s usual output at every speed.
Sync speeds and limits are model-specific
There is no single normal sync speed or maximum HSS shutter speed that applies to every camera and flash. Consult the specifications and manuals for the body, flash, and supported pairing. For one model-specific example, Nikon lists the Z 30’s X sync speed as 1/200 second and states that Auto FP HSS is supported in its Z 30 specifications. That figure is not a universal HSS limit.

Compatibility matters across brands as well as across models. Nikon cautions that non-Nikon flashes may not fully work with its FP feature. Avoid assuming cross-brand support unless the exact camera-and-flash combination is confirmed in the manuals. Nikon’s older D2Hs guide also documents Auto FP as a model-specific feature, not a universal setting.
