If mscaptions.exe appears to be consuming an unusually large amount of memory, turn Live Captions off temporarily if Windows is struggling, then check whether the process’s committed memory keeps rising over time. A high Task Manager reading by itself does not confirm a memory leak. Microsoft’s published guidance does not confirm a general mscaptions.exe leak or identify affected Windows builds.
What the memory reading does—and doesn’t—tell you
Live Captions is a Windows 11 accessibility feature that automatically transcribes audio. Microsoft documents it as available in Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, with audio processing and caption generation performed on the device. Microsoft says audio, voice data, and generated captions are not shared to the cloud or with Microsoft. See Microsoft’s Live Captions overview.
The phrase “100% RAM usage” describes a report, not a verified Microsoft finding about this process. A Task Manager memory value can be concerning, but it does not establish that memory is leaking. Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance says to confirm a leak and look at Commit size rather than relying only on the default Task Manager memory column. The official sources do not confirm this specific process leak or name an affected Windows build.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTurn Live Captions off temporarily if the PC is under pressure
If the computer is becoming unresponsive, switching off captions is a practical way to contain the symptom and see whether conditions change. This is a test and temporary workaround, not a Microsoft-documented repair for a confirmed leak.
#1 Best Overall
- Streamlined Fan Connections: Daisy-chain multiple fans together and control them all through just one 4-pin PWM connector and one +5V ARGB connector.
- Lighting Made Easy: Eight LEDs per fan shine bright with customisable lighting through your motherboard’s built-in ARGB control (requires compatible motherboard).
- Precise PWM Speeds: Set your fan speeds up to 2,100 RPM while providing up to 72.8 CFM airflow to your system.
- CORSAIR AirGuide Technology: Anti-vortex vanes direct airflow at your hottest components for concentrated cooling, pushing air in the direction you need when mounted to a radiator or heatsink.
- High Static Pressure: RS fans work well as radiator fans with a static pressure of 2.8mm-H2O to push through obstructions.
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Captions.
- Switch off Live Captions.
- Check whether overall responsiveness and the process’s memory reading change.
Microsoft documents this settings control in its Live Captions overview. If disabling captions changes the symptom, that is useful diagnostic evidence, but it does not by itself explain why the memory use was high.
Check whether memory use grows over time
To distinguish a persistent increase from a single high reading, observe the process over time. Microsoft recommends starting with Performance Monitor when checking for a memory leak; its guide says, “Most users should start with Step 1 to confirm a leak exists before investigating further.” Follow Microsoft’s Performance Monitor guidance.

- High performance cooling fan, 120x120x25 mm, 12V, 4-pin PWM, max. 1700 RPM, max. 25.1 dB(A), >150,000 h MTTF
- Renowned NF-P12 high-end 120x25mm 12V fan, more than 100 awards and recommendations from international computer hardware websites and magazines, hundreds of thousands of satisfied users
- Pressure-optimised blade design with outstanding quietness of operation: high static pressure and strong CFM for air-based CPU coolers, water cooling radiators or low-noise chassis ventilation
- 1700rpm 4-pin PWM version with excellent balance of performance and quietness, supports automatic motherboard speed control (powerful airflow when required, virtually silent at idle)
- Streamlined redux edition: proven Noctua quality at an attractive price point, wide range of optional accessories (anti-vibration mounts, S-ATA adaptors, y-splitters, extension cables, etc.)
- Record your Windows version and build, whether Live Captions is on, and which audio sources or apps are active.
- Use Performance Monitor to observe memory behavior over time, rather than drawing a conclusion from one snapshot.
- Note whether the process’s memory keeps increasing under the same conditions, and whether turning captions off changes that pattern.
Resource-intensive apps, including apps sharing video, can affect Live Captions’ real-time behavior and may lead to delays or dropped captions. Microsoft recommends closing unused apps to maximize performance; this advice concerns caption performance and does not show that another app causes an mscaptions.exe leak. Details are in Microsoft’s Live Captions overview.
Check Commit size, not just Task Manager’s default memory column
Task Manager’s default memory column reflects a process’s working set. Microsoft’s application and service guidance cautions against using that column alone to diagnose high memory consumption and recommends verifying Commit size. For deeper analysis, Microsoft identifies VMMap and Windows Performance Toolkit as tools to consider. This is general Windows diagnostic guidance, not a Live Captions-specific procedure. See Microsoft’s memory troubleshooting guidance.

- CONTACT FRAME FOR INTEL LGA1851 | LGA1700: Optimized contact pressure distribution for longer CPU life and better heat dissipation
- ARCTIC's P12 PRO FAN: More power at any speed - more powerful and quieter than the P12, especially at low speeds. Higher maximum speed for optimal cooling performance under high load
- NATIVE OFFSET MOUNTING FOR INTEL AND AMD: Shifting the cold plate center towards the CPU hotspot ensures more efficient heat transfer
- INTEGRATED VRM FAN: PWM-controlled fan that lowers the temperature of the voltage converters and thus ensures reliable performance
- INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard
- Working set: the figure shown in Task Manager’s default memory column; it is not, on its own, proof of a leak.
- Commit size: a more relevant measure to verify when investigating high process memory use, per Microsoft’s guidance.
- Deeper investigation: VMMap or Windows Performance Toolkit can help examine memory behavior beyond an initial check.
Separate language-package setup issues from memory diagnosis
If Live Captions has trouble downloading a speech-language package, Microsoft’s setup troubleshooting addresses connectivity and Microsoft Store access, and directs users to Feedback Hub or an administrator in the scenarios described. Those instructions address setup; they do not claim that repairing a language package fixes a running process’s memory use. See Microsoft’s Live Captions troubleshooting page.
Downloaded speech packs occupy disk space. Microsoft says they can be removed by opening Settings > Apps > Installed apps and searching for “Speech Pack.” Removing a pack is a storage-space measure, not a method established for reducing mscaptions.exe memory use. This distinction is covered in Microsoft’s Live Captions overview.

- 【High Performance Cooling Fan】 Automatic speed control of the motherboard through the 4PIN PWM fan cable interface, which can determine the speed according to the temperature of the motherboard, with a maximum speed of 1550RPM. Configured with up to 55cm of cable for PWM series control of fans, ideal for cases and CPU coolers.
- 【Quality Bearings】The carefully developed quality S-FDB bearings solve the problem of pc cooling fan blade shaking in lifting mode, keeping fan noise to a minimum while providing maximum cooling performance when needed and extending the life of the fan.
- [Excellent LED light] The high-brightness LED atomizing argb fan blade can effectively reflect the light, making the ARGB lighting effect softer, and it matches the cooler and case more perfectly. Up to 17 modes of light effects with ARGB support, color can be managed and synchronized through the port on motherboard.
- 【Silent Fan Size】 Model: TL-C12C-S X5, Size: 120*120*25mm, Speed: 1550RPM±10%, Noise ≤ 25.6dBA Connector: 4pin pwm, Current: 0.20A, Air Pressure: 1.53mm H2O, Air Flow: 66.17CFM, Higher air flow for improved cooling performance.
- 【Perfect Match】The PC fan can be used not only as a case fan, but is also suitable for use with a cpu cooler to create a cooling effect together, which can take away the dry heat from the case and the high temperature generated by the CPU in operation, allowing for maximum cooling; Ideal for cases, radiators and CPU coolers.
Collect evidence if the increase persists
If committed memory continues to rise, preserve details that could help identify a reproducible issue:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Windows version and build.
- A time series or screenshots showing the relevant process memory, including Commit size where available.
- Whether Live Captions was enabled and what audio or apps were active when the increase occurred.
- Whether the pattern changed after captions were switched off.
Microsoft recommends Performance Monitor for initial leak checking and identifies VMMap and Windows Performance Toolkit for further investigation. For feedback about Windows functionality, use Feedback Hub; submitting feedback does not guarantee a fix. The relevant guidance is in Microsoft’s Performance Monitor guide, Microsoft’s memory troubleshooting guidance, and Live Captions troubleshooting.
