High-frequency crypto trading (HFT) is a form of algorithmic trading in which automated systems make decisions and interact with markets rapidly and repeatedly—placing, changing, and canceling orders, and entering or leaving positions over short periods. There is no universal speed threshold that defines HFT, and the label is not a synonym for all automated trading.
What is high-frequency trading?
HFT describes a trading pattern: automated decisions, frequent order activity, and short-horizon trading. Strategies may include market making—quoting both buy and sell prices to capture small price differences—or arbitrage, which seeks to benefit from price differences between markets or instruments. These are examples, not a description of every crypto bot or trader.
Official descriptions of HFT in traditional securities markets emphasize large numbers of orders and cancellations, sometimes in subseconds, alongside frequent intraday changes in positions. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s 2009 testimony also said the term lacked a clear definition. That account is useful context, not a crypto-specific legal definition. How HFT differs from algorithmic trading
Algorithmic trading is the broader category: software determines or carries out trading decisions, such as setting order parameters or executing an order. HFT is one subset, characterized by rapid, repeated market interaction. An automated strategy is not necessarily HFT just because it uses software.

ASIC, Australia’s securities regulator, notes that “high-frequency trading is not a technical term.” In practice, classification depends on the pattern of activity and, where relevant, the rules that apply—not simply on whether a trader uses an algorithm. ASIC’s review of high-frequency trading.
Is there a set speed threshold for crypto HFT?
No universal threshold is established by the sources cited here. A single order-per-second figure would not capture the strategy, the instrument and venue, order-message activity, latency setup, holding period, or applicable law. The term is used descriptively, while some jurisdictions apply specific criteria for regulatory purposes.

The EU’s scoped regulatory test
One EU regulatory criterion considers an average of at least two messages per second for a single financial instrument, or at least four messages per second across instruments. The rule is subject to defined scope conditions, including the instruments, venue, and own-account activity covered. It is a jurisdiction-specific classification test, not a technical definition for crypto markets everywhere. Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2017/565.

Academic work has studied intraday high-frequency trading patterns in cryptocurrency markets. A 2020 paper by Petukhina, Reule, and Härdle analyzes cryptocurrency returns, traded volumes, volatility, and timing patterns using five-minute intervals. Its methods and sample show that crypto-specific intraday research exists; they do not prove that every crypto asset or venue is continuously dominated by bots, or establish a universal speed threshold. “Rise of the Machines? Historical figures from traditional markets should not be treated as measurements of crypto trading. For example, ASIC attributed 27% of Australian equity-market turnover to HFT in its analysis of January through September 2012. That is a dated finding about Australian equities, not an estimate for cryptocurrency markets. Likewise, the SEC’s 2009 discussion concerns U.S. securities-market structure.

Calling a strategy HFT alone does not establish how it affects a particular market. To understand a specific activity, consider its strategy, instrument and venue, order-message frequency, latency infrastructure, holding period, and regulatory setting. HFT is often discussed in connection with both potential liquidity contributions and risks, but equity-market claims cannot by themselves prove the effects in crypto markets.

Holding periods also need not be measured in fractions of a second. In ASIC’s Australian-equity analysis, 1.2% of HFT traders held positions for an average of two minutes or less, 18% held them for less than ten minutes, and 51% for less than thirty minutes. Those figures are historical equity-market findings, not crypto statistics, and they illustrate why “high-frequency” should not be reduced to a claim that every position lasts only seconds.
