A plane can jolt or suddenly lose altitude even beneath a cloudless sky because of clear-air turbulence (CAT)—rapid, irregular air movement caused mainly by wind shear near jet streams, upper-level fronts, the tropopause and mountain-wave flows. Unlike storm turbulence, CAT may provide no visual warning and often produces little or no weather-radar return.
What clear-air turbulence is
The National Weather Service defines clear-air turbulence as “sudden severe turbulence occurring in cloudless regions that causes violent buffeting of aircraft.” FAA aviation-weather guidance places it most often at roughly 20,000 to 50,000 feet, where strong wind shear can develop near the core and boundaries of a jet stream.
Wind shear means adjacent layers or masses of air are moving at different speeds or in different directions. Around a jet-stream boundary, an upper-level front, the tropopause or a mountain-wave flow, that shear can become unstable and break into waves and eddies. An aircraft crossing one of those pockets may encounter abrupt vertical or sideways acceleration even though the view from the window is completely clear.

Why a clear sky does not protect a flight
Clouds and precipitation are visual clues to some forms of turbulence, particularly convection around thunderstorms. Clear-air turbulence has no such dependable surface sign. Conventional airborne weather radar detects precipitation and liquid water, not every region of disturbed, dry air. A radar screen can therefore look benign while CAT exists ahead.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The FAA describes turbulence generally as air movement that normally cannot be seen and often occurs unexpectedly. Jet streams, pressure patterns, fronts, mountains, thunderstorms and wake vortices can all generate turbulence; CAT is the nonconvective, cloudless subset most closely associated with high-altitude wind shear.
Where pilots expect CAT
- Jet-stream boundaries: The strongest changes in wind speed and direction often sit along the edges of fast upper-level currents.
- Upper-level fronts and the tropopause: Closely packed temperature and pressure gradients can create shear and breaking waves.
- Mountain waves: Air flowing over terrain can form oscillating waves and turbulent rotors downwind, sometimes without obvious lenticular clouds.
- Transitions around weather systems: A flight can leave visible cloud or storm activity and still meet turbulent shear in otherwise transparent air.
How CAT compares with other turbulence
| Type | Primary source | Visibility and altitude clues | Forecastability and response | Passenger precaution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clear-air turbulence | Wind shear, commonly near jet streams, fronts or the tropopause | Often cloudless; frequently encountered at about 20,000–50,000 feet | Forecast models, observations and pilot reports help, but small pockets can remain undetected; crews may change altitude or route | Keep the belt fastened whenever seated |
| Convective turbulence | Rising and sinking air in thunderstorms and strong showers | Cloud towers, rain and radar reflectivity often provide clues | Storm cells can be mapped and avoided; crews reroute or wait for gaps | Remain seated and follow crew instructions before entering rough air |
| Mountain-wave turbulence | Wind flowing over mountain ranges | May occur downwind of terrain, with or without visible lenticular clouds | Terrain and forecast wind fields aid planning; crews adjust altitude or track | Use the seat belt throughout the flight |
| Wake-vortex turbulence | Rotating wingtip vortices left by another aircraft | Usually invisible; location depends on the preceding aircraft and wind | Air-traffic separation and spacing reduce encounters | Stay buckled because the event can be abrupt |
How aviation detects and manages invisible turbulence
Forecasts and nowcasts
FAA-funded work with the National Center for Atmospheric Research supports turbulence nowcasts updated at 15-minute intervals for tactical decisions. The FAA turbulence program combines atmospheric observations, numerical models, pilot reports and operational tools. NOAA’s updated aviation forecast system is designed to improve prediction of clear-air, mountain-wave, low-level and in-cloud turbulence, helping dispatchers and pilots choose routes with less exposure and avoid unnecessary rerouting.

Pilot reports (PIREPs)
An aircraft that encounters CAT can report its time, position, altitude and intensity. Those pilot reports are distributed to following crews and air-traffic facilities, turning an invisible local event into a warning for aircraft approaching the same area. Reports are especially valuable because they provide observations where forecasts cannot resolve a small turbulent pocket.
Route, altitude and cabin decisions
Flight crews and dispatchers review forecasts, satellite and model guidance, air-traffic information and recent reports before and during a flight. When conditions warrant, a crew can request another altitude or route, adjust speed or configuration under approved procedures, and suspend cabin service. Controllers help relay relevant reports and coordinate altitude changes, although traffic, fuel and weather constraints can limit the available options.

How dangerous is clear-air turbulence?
For U.S. scheduled Part 121 operations, FAA data show that 152 of 420 accidents from 2008 through 2022—36 percent—involved turbulence, making it the leading defining event in that period. Every turbulence-related accident in that summary resulted in at least one serious injury. Those figures describe regulatory accident categories, not the probability that an individual passenger will be hurt on a particular flight.
Most turbulence encounters do not damage the aircraft. The main cabin danger is a person being thrown from a seat or striking the interior while unrestrained. The FAA reports that fatal turbulence-related accidents involving Part 121 carriers are exceedingly rare, although fatal events have occurred among some general-aviation and commuter or on-demand operators.

What passengers should do
- Keep the lap belt fastened whenever seated. Wear it low and snug across the hips, even when the seat-belt sign is off.
- Store loose items. Secure phones, laptops, drinks and bags so they cannot become projectiles during a sudden jolt.
- Follow the cabin crew promptly. Flight attendants may stop service and ask everyone to sit down before rough air arrives; they face greater exposure because their duties keep them out of their seats.
- Do not interpret a clear view as a forecast. A cloudless window only shows that there is no visible cloud, not that the surrounding air is smooth.
Why pilots cannot avoid every pocket
Forecasts describe areas of elevated risk, not an exact map of every eddy. Atmospheric features evolve, observations are separated in space and time, and turbulence can be much smaller than a forecast grid. A crew may therefore encounter CAT despite sound planning. Continuous reports from aircraft ahead, updated nowcasts and coordination with dispatch and air traffic control reduce exposure but cannot eliminate uncertainty.
