Hideo Kojima’s October 13, 2026 visit to Sony City in Tokyo does not show that Sony has resumed funding Physint or signed a new agreement with Kojima Productions. It does show a cordial public gesture after Sony reportedly stepped away from the project. The game was reported to have found Microsoft/Xbox as its new publishing partner, while its final platforms and release plans remain unconfirmed.
What happened to Physint?
The Washington Post reported that Sony told Kojima Productions during a June 2026 Zoom call that it would stop funding Physint, Kojima’s planned return to the action-espionage genre. The report said the decision created concern for the roughly 200-person Tokyo studio, and that Microsoft/Xbox subsequently became the game’s new publisher.
That is a funding and publishing change, not proof that Physint has been cancelled. The available reporting does not establish that development has ended, nor does it confirm a final launch platform. Sony’s withdrawal also does not automatically remove the possibility of a future PlayStation release; no platform lineup has been announced in the material available for this story.
How Kojima described the split
In the Washington Post interview, Kojima said: “I was just shocked and surprised. I didn’t have any anger or sadness. I was just thinking, ‘What should I do?’” He reportedly returned to work immediately, moved some staff to the OD project and kept a smaller team on Physint.

In separate coverage of an IGN interview, Kojima said, “So I have no bad feelings towards them.” Those comments are the clearest direct evidence about his personal view of Sony. They do not describe a new business arrangement.
Why the Sony City visit drew attention
On October 13, Play3.de reported that Kojima posted photos from Sony City in Tokyo with the caption “I have visited Sony City.” The simple post quickly became a meme and prompted speculation because it followed reports of Sony’s funding decision and Xbox’s publishing role.

A visit to a company’s headquarters can have many explanations: a scheduled appointment, a personal visit, a production or licensing discussion, or an appearance unrelated to Physint. The public record does not say whom Kojima met, whether executives were involved, or whether the meeting concerned a game. Treating the photographs as evidence of a new contract goes beyond what has been confirmed.

The timeline behind the headlines
- January 31, 2024: Physint was announced as Kojima’s return to action-espionage in collaboration with Sony/PlayStation.
- June 2026: Sony reportedly told Kojima Productions on a Zoom call that it would stop funding the game.
- September 2026: Interviews and reports discussed the Sony split, Xbox’s reported publishing role and Kojima Productions’ rejection of unsupported explanations about the project’s budget or deadline.

What the visit does—and does not—tell us
It supports a professional relationship
Kojima’s own words already argued against a public feud. Visiting Sony City is consistent with that position: professional ties can remain respectful even after a financing agreement ends. The image is therefore meaningful as a sign that the relationship is not publicly acrimonious.

It does not prove a deal
There is no confirmed announcement that Sony is returning as Physint’s funder, publisher or platform holder. There is also no evidence in these reports that the Sony City visit changed the reported Xbox arrangement. Until the companies or Kojima Productions publish terms, those conclusions are inference.

Kojima Productions has cautioned against reading unsupported claims as fact, saying: “Normally, we would not comment on unsubstantiated speculation on the internet…” That warning applies both to claims that Sony and Kojima are now enemies and to claims that a headquarters visit has already produced a new agreement.
