Hideo Kojima is not returning to PlayStation with PHYSINT. PlayStation Studios cancelled its involvement in the action-espionage project in mid-June 2026, and Xbox announced on September 9 that it will publish the game with Kojima Productions. The change turns a planned Sony collaboration into a new Xbox partnership; it does not confirm an Xbox-exclusive release or rule out a future PlayStation version.
What happened to Kojima’s PlayStation spy game?
PHYSINT was announced in January 2024 as Kojima’s return to the action-espionage genre, developed by Kojima Productions in collaboration with Sony and PlayStation. The project was therefore widely understood as a PlayStation-backed game.
That arrangement ended in mid-June 2026. Kojima said PlayStation Studios unexpectedly notified Kojima Productions that it would cancel the project. His account was reported by Variety on September 9, 2026. Kojima Productions then spent three months seeking another partner before choosing Xbox.

Xbox also described the relationship as broader than an individual game: the companies intend to collaborate beyond games, including film and television.

Is PHYSINT an Xbox exclusive?
There is no official confirmation that PHYSINT will be exclusive to Xbox. The September 9 announcement identifies Xbox as the publishing partner, but it does not list confirmed platforms, a release date, a price, or a retail edition. That leaves the game’s eventual availability open.
| Question | What is confirmed |
|---|---|
| Publisher relationship | Xbox and Kojima Productions will publish PHYSINT together. |
| PlayStation involvement | PlayStation Studios cancelled its involvement in mid-June 2026, according to Kojima. |
| Confirmed platforms | Not stated in the September 9 announcement. |
| Release timing | No launch date has been announced. |
| Creative control | No new division of creative responsibilities has been disclosed. |
| Film and television work | Xbox says the expanded Kojima Productions relationship includes film and television projects. |
Consequently, claims that the game is definitely an Xbox console exclusive, or that it is definitely coming to PS5 or a future PlayStation console, go beyond the available announcement. A PlayStation release would require a later official statement.

Why did Kojima leave PlayStation?
The public explanation is a cancellation, not a declared decision by Kojima to abandon PlayStation. Kojima’s quoted account says PlayStation Studios sent the cancellation notice unexpectedly. The available announcements do not explain the commercial, scheduling, budgetary or creative reasons behind Sony’s decision.

Will PHYSINT come to PS5 or PS6?
At present, neither a PS5 version nor a PS6 version has been confirmed. The same applies to Xbox consoles, PC and any other platform: Xbox’s announcement confirms the publishing relationship but does not publish a platform list. Readers should treat every specific platform claim as unconfirmed until Kojima Productions, Xbox or another authorized publisher announcement supplies it.

Kojima’s earlier PlayStation collaboration remains the clearest currently available physical connection for players interested in his work on Sony’s platform.
