To hide recent files in Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Personalization > Start and turn off Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer. This setting affects all three locations, not just Start. It hides the recent-items display; it does not delete your files.
Turn off recently opened items in Windows 11
- Select Start, then Settings.
- Go to Personalization > Start.
- Switch off Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer. Microsoft documents this toggle for showing or hiding recently opened items across those three surfaces: Microsoft accessibility guidance.
The change controls whether those recent items appear; it is not a command to delete the files.
What if recent files still appear in Start?
The Start menu’s Recommended area can also show recently opened files. That content is related to, but distinct from, the named recent-items toggle. Microsoft says you can turn off recommended providers; when all providers are disabled, the Recommendations sections collapse. See Microsoft’s Start menu customization guidance.

Quick access
If your goal is to hide recent files or frequent folders in File Explorer’s Quick access, open File Explorer Options and use the privacy checkboxes on the General tab. Clear the options for recently used files and frequently used folders. Pinned folders can remain visible; Microsoft describes these controls separately from the Start setting: Quick access guidance.

File Explorer Home
File Explorer Options also has separate privacy choices for account-based insights and for showing recent, favorite, and recommended files in Home. These options govern File Explorer Home, not the Start menu toggle. See Microsoft’s File Explorer Home guidance.
Related privacy settings are not the same control
App launch tracking
Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers contains the app-launch tracking setting in Microsoft’s current guidance. It affects personalization of Start and search based on the apps you launch; it is not the documented switch for hiding recently opened files. Older Windows 11 versions may show this setting under General instead. See Microsoft’s privacy settings guidance.

Activity History
Activity History is a separate Windows privacy feature. Microsoft provides controls to stop saving activity history locally or clear it; turning off the recent-items display does not itself clear Activity History. See Microsoft’s Activity History guidance.

Check Settings > Personalization > Start and make sure Windows is updated. Microsoft notes that the older General privacy page is being replaced by Recommendations & offers on newer Windows 11 versions; that page change concerns app-launch tracking, not the recent-items switch.
