To connect to a hidden Wi-Fi network, you need its exact network name (SSID), security type, and password or security key. Enter those details through your device’s Wi-Fi settings; on Windows, use the built-in setup or connect flow. Hiding an SSID only removes its name from ordinary network listings—it does not make the network undetectable or protect it from unauthorized access.

This guide covers hidden SSIDs, sometimes called non-broadcast networks. It does not cover the separate radio “hidden-station” problem, which concerns how devices contend for wireless airtime.

What a hidden Wi-Fi network is—and is not

A router or access point can be configured not to include its network name in ordinary Wi-Fi listings. Microsoft refers to these as non-broadcast profiles. The network still exists and can be detected; clients may need to be configured with its name and security details to connect. Microsoft Learn explains non-broadcast Wi-Fi profiles.

“Hidden Wi-Fi channel” is not the precise term for this setting. A Wi-Fi channel is a radio-frequency channel used for transmission; hiding an SSID suppresses the network name in standard listings, not the radio channel itself.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

What you need before connecting

  • Exact SSID: Get the network name from its administrator or router documentation. Microsoft’s protocol reference specifies that SSIDs are case-sensitive and can be up to 32 characters. Microsoft’s SSID reference was updated April 23, 2024.
  • Security or authentication type: Know which mode the access point uses so you can select the matching option if your device asks.
  • Password or key: Obtain the authorized network credential from the administrator. A hidden name is not a substitute for authentication.

Connect to a hidden network in Windows

Windows provides built-in Wi-Fi setup and connection flows. The precise labels and fields can vary by Windows version and device, so follow the prompts shown on your PC.

  1. Open the Wi-Fi controls in Windows Settings and choose the option to add or set up a network, or use the connect flow if it offers a hidden-network option. Microsoft documents both setting up a wireless network in Windows and connecting to a Wi-Fi network in Windows.
  2. Enter the SSID exactly, including capitalization, when prompted.
  3. Select the security type that matches the access point and enter the password or key.
  4. Complete the prompts and check whether Windows reports a connection.

On phones, tablets, and other computers, use the device’s Wi-Fi settings and look for an option to add a network manually. Menu names and fields differ by operating system and version; consult the device documentation if the option is not apparent.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

If the connection fails

  • Recheck the SSID: Confirm every character and its capitalization. An SSID can be case-sensitive and is limited to 32 characters.
  • Match the security mode: A mismatch between the selected mode and the access point can prevent connection. Check the router’s configuration or ask its administrator.
  • Verify the key: Confirm you have the current password or security key, rather than relying on an old saved credential.
  • Check device compatibility: Security modes and available setup options vary among devices. Consult the router and client documentation if they do not offer a compatible mode.
  • Use the device-specific instructions: Windows, Android, iOS, and other systems do not necessarily present the same fields or menu paths. For Android hotspot configuration, the Android Open Source Project’s Wi-Fi hotspot documentation describes Soft AP settings; it is not a universal connection guide for every Android device.

Does hiding the SSID improve security?

No. Apple Support says, “Hiding the network name doesn’t conceal the network from being detected or secure it against unauthorised access.” Apple recommends disabling hidden-network mode and using appropriate router security settings instead. Hiding a name also affects how client devices search for and connect to networks, which can expose information about networks a user uses. Read Apple Support’s recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points.

For access control, use a strong network key and a suitable authentication mode. Microsoft recommends changing default router credentials and using WPA3 when both the router and PC support it. Compatibility is not universal: check the documentation for older or otherwise unsupported devices before selecting a security mode. Microsoft’s Windows wireless-network setup guidance covers these security recommendations.

Should you hide your home network’s name?

For a typical home network, hiding the SSID is not a meaningful substitute for security and can make setup or reconnection less straightforward. Apple’s router guidance recommends disabling the setting; use the access point’s supported security mode and a strong key to control access. If you need to connect to a network whose administrator has chosen not to broadcast its name, use the exact credentials they provide.
