AI may help retail traders organize trade records, summarize broker disclosures and compare fills with a stated benchmark—but the sources available do not establish that any particular AI tool finds every trading cost or improves execution. To judge what an analysis means, first know which costs can sit outside a commission line, what data and benchmark the tool uses, and whether it is merely analyzing information or can place trades.

What counts as a trading cost?

A zero or low commission does not mean a trade is cost-free. Trading costs include explicit charges and implicit costs that arise through the price or execution of an order. Not every implicit cost is a fee charged by a broker: spreads, market impact and delays can reflect market conditions and the consequences of trading.

Cost or measure What it captures What to keep in mind
Explicit costs Visible charges such as commissions, transaction taxes, stamp duties and exchange fees. Check the applicable account and trade records; a commission figure alone does not describe the full cost.
Bid–ask spread The difference between the best available buying and selling prices. A trade can incur a cost through the execution price even when no commission is charged.
Market impact The effect of an order on the market price as it is executed. It can be difficult to separate from ordinary price movement, especially for larger orders.
Delay and unfilled orders Costs or missed opportunities associated with waiting to execute or not completing an order. A fill-only comparison may miss the opportunity cost of shares that were never executed.
Effective spread A common way to estimate the spread-related cost of an execution. It may poorly estimate actual costs when large orders fill in pieces over time or small orders receive price improvement.
Implementation shortfall Aims to capture explicit and implicit costs, including market impact, delay and opportunity costs. Its result depends on the chosen starting point and other measurement choices.
VWAP Compares average fill prices with the market’s average price over a chosen period. It can understate costs when it does not capture market impact.

The CFA Institute’s 2026 curriculum reading discusses these cost categories and measurement limits. Read its overview of trading costs and electronic markets.

What can AI do with trading-cost information?

AI could plausibly help gather and sort trade records, categorize charges, summarize routing disclosures or compare fills with a benchmark. Those are potential uses, not verified capabilities or evidence that a tool will identify all costs. A useful analysis needs relevant inputs: for example, actual order and fill records, contemporaneous market quotes and a clearly stated measurement window. If those inputs are missing, stale or incomplete, the output may not describe the trade accurately.

Ask how the tool defines its benchmark and what it leaves out. Effective spread, implementation shortfall and VWAP answer different questions; none should be treated as a universal score. The method should explain its assumptions, time period and treatment of partial fills, unfilled orders, price movement and explicit charges. A comparison that omits some of these factors may still be informative, but it is not a complete accounting of trading costs.

How can you assess your broker’s execution?

For a specific trade, start with your own order and fill records. A public routing disclosure can add context about a broker’s routing practices, but it is not a complete account of the execution quality of an individual fill.

  1. Record the trade. Keep the order time, order type, quantity, fill times and prices, any partial or unfilled portion, and the charges shown on your statement.
  2. Choose a relevant comparison. Use a benchmark suited to the question and period you want to assess. For example, VWAP compares fills with average market prices over a period, while implementation shortfall is designed to include additional costs such as delay and opportunity costs.
  3. Check the inputs and omissions. Confirm whether the comparison uses contemporaneous quotes and covers partial fills, unfilled shares and explicit charges. Note any limitation that could change the result.
  4. Read the broker’s routing information. In the United States, Rule 606 disclosures can provide information about certain routing practices and payments or other arrangements with trading centers. Use them to understand the broker’s practices, not to infer that a particular order received a particular price.
  5. Compare consistently. Look across similar orders and market conditions rather than treating one execution as proof of a general pattern. Record the method and period so that comparisons remain meaningful.

The SEC staff FAQ explains Rule 606 reporting, including disclosures about certain payments received from or paid to trading centers, terms of payment-for-order-flow or profit-sharing arrangements, and reports posted on a free, readily accessible website for three years. See the SEC’s Rule 606 FAQ. These disclosures illuminate routing practices, not every detail of an individual execution.

What does payment for order flow mean?

Payment for order flow (PFOF) is one possible arrangement in which a broker receives compensation for routing orders to a trading center. In its 2020 report, the SEC described retail brokers historically routing many marketable retail orders to wholesale market makers. Those firms may provide price improvement—an execution inside the national best bid and offer—or size improvement, while some brokers receive PFOF for routing orders to them. PFOF is therefore an incentive or potential conflict to examine; it does not by itself prove that every order routed under such an arrangement receives a worse execution.

The SEC report cited voluntary execution-quality statistics for the first quarter of 2019 in which some wholesale market makers reported price improvement for more than approximately 85% of retail orders across a range of order sizes. That figure reflects a historical, limited sample—not all brokers, current execution quality or the performance of AI tools. Read the SEC’s 2020 Report to Congress on Algorithmic Trading.

For current U.S. disclosures, consult the broker’s own Rule 606 reports and the SEC FAQ rather than relying on historical rulemaking alone. The SEC’s 2001 material can provide background on how order-flow compensation has included non-cash benefits and discounts as well as monetary payments, but it is not a substitute for current disclosures. See the SEC’s 2001 rulemaking material.

How can you vet an AI or auto-trading service?

An analysis tool that summarizes records is different from an auto-trading service that can send instructions to a brokerage account. Treat account access and claims of automated performance as separate risks from a tool’s ability to explain costs.

  • Check coverage: Does it include explicit charges, spreads, market impact, delay and unfilled orders, or only selected items?
  • Ask about data and method: Does it use your actual order and fill records and relevant market data? Does it state its measurement window, benchmark and limitations?
  • Check incentives and fees: What does the provider charge, how can you cancel, and does it or a broker receive compensation, rebates or other benefits connected with recommendations or routing?
  • Protect account access: Be cautious about sharing brokerage credentials or personal information, and understand whether the service can place trades.
  • Verify the provider and claims: Check registration where required, substantiate performance statements, and confirm claimed partnerships directly with the named firm.
  • Keep oversight: Review account activity even if you use a regulated service.

FINRA’s alert of 29 July 2025 warns about unregistered entities offering auto-trading services, unsupported performance claims, misleading partnership claims and “AI-washing”—claims that overstate or falsely describe a service’s AI capabilities. FINRA advises investors to research providers and individuals through BrokerCheck, verify partnerships, question guarantees and vague technology claims, and monitor account activity. It says: “Any auto-trading investment service should be able to explain with specificity how its technology works.” Read FINRA’s auto-trading risk alert.

Which rules apply where you live?

Rule 606 and the FINRA guidance discussed here are U.S.-specific. In the European Union, MiFIR Article 39a states that covered investment firms shall not receive third-party fees, commissions or non-monetary benefits for executing or forwarding client orders to a particular venue. The article also provided for certain Member States to exempt qualifying firms until 30 June 2026. Because that date has passed, do not assume the temporary exemption remains active; country-specific implementation or later changes are not established here. Check the rules and regulator guidance applicable to your jurisdiction. See ESMA’s MiFIR Article 39a text.
